the watson twins

got a new album by them in the mail and get this: i can't stop playing it! i know, right? it's soooooooo...pleasant though! also, it has to be said, it's PERFECT "store music". can play it over and over and nobody walking in or out will blink twice. it certainly won't offend anyone. i dunno. i guess i'm just in the mood. it's so clean and freshly scrubbed. sometimes it even sounds like what i imagine the fiery furnaces would sound like if they were normal and didn't own a dictionary. or a thesaurus. or an atlas. also, and i'm not making this up: there are even trip-hop songs on here! in 2009! and i don't even hate them! like i said, pleasant. is this what norah jones fans feel like all the time? all pleasant and warm inside? safe and sound. don't get me wrong, i like lots of beautiful music, but this is a certain kind of beautiful music. i feel like i should be thinking of old boyfriends when i'm listening to it.

four weeks pass...

i've played this album...hmmmm...probably a hundred times. maybe more.

now, granted, part of the reason is cuz its really good retail music. i can put it on in the store and keep playing it and it provides a good store soundtrack. but when i play it i definitely WANT to hear it over and over too. in the past - with slightly similar music - i did this with Dummy and Ingenue. i mean dummy was the retail soundtrack of choice for half the nation at the time. and i wasn't immune. i played it constantly in my lil' record store in philadelphia. ingenue was partially love affair-induced. i played it on my walkman every day for months walking to and from work. this album, i dunno, guess it hits those same spots for me. it's kind of perfect. not too long. great production. great vocal performances. come to think of it, the last time i felt this way about a girlypop album was probably that deana carter album (the story of my life).

one month passes...

can't believe vanguard is releasing the watson twins album right around the same time that they are releasing the living sisters album! it's like an inter-label battle of the atmospheric retro americana indiepop girly girls! and the living sisters album is great - i don't know the other groups the living sisters are in: lavender diamond and the bird & the bee - but i still like the watson twins album a lot more.
