the beginning of "kiss them for me" and the middle of "pearl." did siouxsie sample chapterhouse, was it the other way around, or did they both get it from a third, earler source. i guess it also turned up in a pwei song, but i've never heard it.

when the levee breaks by led zeppelin

keith, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i know that "when the levee breaks" is the "pearl" beat (along with about a million other songs), but i'm talking about the break in the middle that is also basically the whole "kiss them for me" beat. or is this led zep as well?

drake, Friday, 5 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know exactly the break you're talking about -- I was listening to "Pearl" the other week and wondering about that again. And no, not the "When the Levee Breaks" bit. Been wondering about that for a decade now!

Didn't Chapterhouse recycle it in "We Are the Beautiful" as well?

i think we are all trying to block out all post 'mesmerise' chapterhouse material, or maybe i am the only one.

This is in a PIL song as well but I can't remember which one!

re PIL, I'm thinking Home or Seattle.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

It's "The Body". Might be talking about a different sample actually. I'm talking about the whole rhythm track; it's identical to Kiss Them For Me. Did they have the same producer for these songs?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:41 (twenty years ago) link

answering my own question, no, not quite; "body" was on Happy which was produced by Gary Langan and Superstition was produced by Stephen Hague, but Hague produced the next PIL album, and John McGeogh was in PIL for this album, but not in the Banshees for Superstition. Beats me!

If it weren't for "Pearl", I think I could live in a world in which Rachel Goswell never existed.

Yeah well, you're a punk. There.

Because of the eye makeup, you can see the tracks of Ned's tears.

Okay, here's the scoop...
1. Schoolly D created the beat in 1986's "P.S.K. (What Does It Mean)".
2. Big Audio Dynamite (early champions of Schoolly D) sampled it FIRST in a filler song, "All Mink and No Manners" on 1989's "Megatop Phoenix".
3. Public Image Limited releases "The Greatest Hits, So Far" in 1990. Stephen Hague's remix of "The Body" is included.
4. Chapterhouse has Stephen Hague do some remix work on their first album, 1991's "Whirlpool", including "Pearl".
5. At the end of 1991, Siouxsie & the Banshees releases "Kiss Them For Me". Stephen Hague produces.

So, save for Schoolly D himself and Big Audio Dynamite, it appears the common link between PIL, Chapterhouse, and Siouxsie is Stephen Hague. Someone should ask him if he only has one beat CD.

so... what did PEARL sound like *before* then? i mean before he remixed it?

also - there's a 'remaster' of WHIRLPOOL on sou1s££k and it sounds like the version of SOMETHING MORE they have on it is *completely different* to the original album version. what's the story there?

Add Chapterhouse to MyNME
Former NME cover stars Chapterhouse played live for the first time in more than a decade at the weekend (July 20).

Three members of the band - singer/guitarists Andrew Sheriff and Stephen Patman, plus guitarist Simon Rowe - joined forces with German electronica star Ulrich Schnauss for a version of their 1993 track 'Love Forever'.

The seminal shoegazers made the surprise appearance to close the Sonic Cathedral stage at this year's Truck Festival in Oxfordshire, following headliners Maps, who ended their set with a cover version of Ride's 1992 hit 'Leave Them All Behind', also featuring Schnauss and Henrique Laurindo from The Tamborines.

It is not known if Chapterhouse have any further live plans, but their second and final album, 1993's 'Blood Music', was recently reissued with extra tracks.
