No, I think that airiness and lightness is a very deliberate aesthetic, they seem to work quite hard to get that level of minimalism. Listening to the music and how it intertwines, you can hear things that have been deliberately left out in order to leave that sense of airiness.

Oh yeah, that's deliberate as well obviously. I really love the sense of delicacy and space.

It's actually quite *hard* to write music that minimal, and yet still maintain the sense of texture that they have. It's kind of like the aural equivalent of lacemaking.

They definitely look like they're ready for the Lillith Fair, but their music is much weirder and more interesting.

new album is a huge improvement, the stripped back minimal sound really suits them.

I first saw them on an NYC cable indie rock show, New York Noise. They were auditioning people off the street to be VJs. They're a lot funnier than you'd think based on their look and music.

Agree about the stripped back sound - they now sound on record a lot more like they do live. However, I think "The Bird of Music" has stronger songs than "Still Night...". Not heard the first one.

one of these bands i randomly d/l'd based off a last.fm pic (three naked asses on a...log?) and have progressively and increasingly enjoyed more and more with each subsequent listen. "sad song", for all it's simplicity, actually has a lot of subtle complexities i didn't start noticing until seemingly the 20th listen

they are v.v. pretty, but has to be some of the most boring music i have ever heard.

i liked a couple of their songs from way back... "backyards" or something? wasn't nuts about what i heard subsequently.

"Shadows" is a brilliant song, and they'll always be heroes for their turn on Aeroplane's remix of "Paris" and Shinichi Osawa's cover of "Star Guitar".

I can't actually remember how any of their songs went, now. Apart from the Aeroplane remixes.

The first half of the last album is lovely, but it gets a bit samey after that. Bits of the Julia Holter album remind me of them actually, although only one segment of a song.

erika spring just released her own solo titled ep - given it a couple listens. it's fun, but unmemorable at parts. kinda pastiche in that brooklyn way that's sorta the norm.

I like it

I like this more than any other album of theirs I've heard, even though it is very front-loaded. I keep expecting them to belt but it's still all very restrained, which is actually quite nice.

ARS don't belt. They waft.

I like Still Night better but this is still a fine record.

Yeah, it would be unexpected and weird if they were to start belting, but the songs seem to lend themselves to these big moments that seem even sweeter because they keep things grounded. When I'm singing along to this in the car I find it very easy to oversing along.
