Oh come on, that part about a minute and a half in where the whole thing snaps into the 'i could be wrong, it could be hate' part, jesus

Ha! I remember Lester Bangs being very excited about that bit as well.

Who voted for The Suit? If my memory serves right, that song blows.

Yeah, I love how the whole mix changes at that moment.

It's one of the best moments on the album, IMO! It's their version of the 'Strawberry Fields' edit.

I prefer the single version, but I wouldn't swap it.

Anyone planning to splurge on the box set? I love this album but not sure how much I need 'extras' from it. Then again, I've never owned this on vinyl (a crime, I know), and would definitely buy a reasonably priced reissue without all the single edits and live tracks and stuff

Wimmels, Thursday, 3 November 2016 14:31 (seven years ago) link

I grew up thinking that this was the ultimate "have to have on vinyl" album (I think Rolling Stone Record Guide made it seem especially legendary), and finally did spring for an original copy of Metal Box, and yes it was kind of cool to own. Anyway: it may have been earth-shattering pre-CD thanks to being 45rpm etc., but I didn't notice any huge difference between vinyl and CD, especially in terms of bass. So...I don't think it's a crime. I ended up selling my Metal Box at a yard sale, where someone was very surprised to find it.

I bought the original "Metal Box" with my first wage packet, pretty much.

Metal Box's headquarters were in Reading at the time, and I considered going there to see if they had any cheapies. Got almost to the building when I thought to myself "Get Real" and went to Quicksilvers and bought it there. I obviously got the CD some time later (in its little tin box) and it's good, but I did dig out the original a couple years ago, and yeah that's the one. I have had the box set on order it's been pushed back to December but hey.

Recently, John Lydon was doing a book-signing tour and was due to be in Reading the same week that the Metal Box building was being demolished - was looking forward to getting my book signed personally and telling him about it - but the date was changed and I was out of the country. (I did ask Alice if she was bothered - she could have gone wearing her motorhead t-shirt - but she wasn't fussed).

(I did get the book at Rough Trade London - they had some signed ones, so happy ending)

Every copy I've come across of this has been rusted to fuck.

Mine's not too bad..

Mark G, Thursday, 3 November 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

I have a rusty first issue of the CD, sounds great, better than the shitty US version. I'm not paying that much money for a deluxe of this, the price is absurd
