I used to think Fruity Loops was crud, now I think it's ace. I haven't tried Orion Pro tho, what's it like? The combination of Reason, Fruity Loops and Cubase is working well for me at the minute.

Gotta say ... Fruity Loops 3 is excellent. Amazing what you can do with it. I'm not nearly into it to program the synths yet, but seems pretty powerful.

Could never really get to grips with Orion, but Fruity Loops seems a far more intuitive interface, and you can start at any particular level you like, just making little loops and fun things first and get deeper and deeper into the programming side of things as you get more experienced. I'd got for FL3 anyday really, it's usually my first choice for doing any loops of any kind.

At the end of the day it's all about the quality of your samples. I'm a musician of eighteen or so years and was initially a bit snobbish about floops, but after a while I realised its strength is in its simplicity. The basics are right infront of you and anything more complex is a step behind.

The synths are pretty flexible for what they are, and the wrapper means you can get VSTi in there when you finally get bored using a 404 sinewave as a bass. Which will take a couple of years.

The big limitations of floops is you are bound to a pattern length for your whole track, so no time signature changes.

I've had a quick look at Orion and basically it didn't look as nice as floops so I left it alone. I've heard its okay, so plumming for either one shouldn't be too bad a choice as long as you have something like Soundforge as well for sample editing, and a few sample CD's of decent quality. Get that much and you're 90% of the way there.

i really wish they made fl for mac. it's the one thing i miss the most since migrating. sequencing beats is just so intuitive and fun, infact i'd say it probably has the most user friendly sequencer of any daw i've used
