Primal Scream. I reach levels of intensity denouncing them comparable only to ex-smokers on a health kick, that kind of thing. Somebody pointed out to me recently, "This anti-Primal Scream thing of yours, what's that all about? You've got all the albums and even some T- shirts, 4 copies of Screamadelica and you've spent hours trying to convince me 'Give Out' is a lost masterpiece, you put 'Vanishing Point' in your Top 10 TWO years running and hoped nobody would notice, and now, according to you, they're 'beneath contempt', 'the worst band in the universe', 'symptomatic of everything that's wrong with everything', 'worthless' etc. So what happened, did one of them try to smother you with some bagpipes?" Hmmm...OK, start the meter running..."Well, Doctor, it started approximately 40 minutes after placing 'EXTRMNTR' on the stereo for the first (and last) time - needless to say, on day of release." "I see...why, was it a relative disappoinment?"
"Well Siggy, that's the weird bit. You can't really compare any of their albums to each other because they're all just...stuff thrown together. Whatever they're into at the moment. Every album seems to be done by different people and you never know what's coming next...although with XTRMNTR, it's like I DID know what was coming next, all the time, even if I didn't, do you know what I'm getting at? What I don't understand is that THEIR methods haven't really changed, and every other Scream fan ate it up, so why can't I control my temper when anybody mentions this album?"
"Relax, it's quite normal. I believe that intense feelings of hatred stem from parts of oneself that one is embarrassed or self-critical about on some level. At one point in your life you may've been insecure about your music tastes, believing them to be rather unsophisticated, and the Scream provided a Rough Guide, as it were, to things you felt you HAD to like or at least appreciate. Well, everybody grows out of this phase, and the fact that you consume more music than most people might be a factor in your aesthetic judgements re Scream-vs-who- they're-supposedly-stealing-from, but I believe the real crux here is that all along you were using the Scream as CRITICS rather than a listening experience, and now that you no longer feel the need for 'critics' (except as entertainment) you wish to erase a past in which you did! Like, what's there to be impressed about, using 'On the Corner' samples on 'Vanishing Point' when you can make your mind up about 'OTC' yourself? Give them some slack, maybe they just liked the sample and thought it sounded good! I would recommend avoiding their new product and just listen to their old stuff for nostalgia purposes if you must, you might find some of it very pleasant. How about that "Higher Than the Sun", eh?" Huge weight lifts off me! "Thanks doc." "Don't worry, I see this alot in former Manics fans who suddenly realise that they're actually more literate than Nicky Wire. And between you, me, and the wall, 'Swastika Eyes' is UTTER UTTER DOGSHIT"

orangeee, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mercury Rev. Doesn't really take much explaining: they started the nineties as a frazzled psychedelic pop band who put on fantastic gigs and ended them as a sludgy soft rock outfit who bored me to death when I saw them live.

RickyT, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, that was my answer (why did i think that i would have to think that one out, i mean, its obvious isn't it?)

A tie between Talking Heads and XTC.

Jack Cole, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

T.Rex. I was an obsessive Bolan fan between the ages of 14 and 17 (I'm 33 now)used to go to all the conventions and everything but to be honest It's not that I hate them nowadays it's just that for some reason, whenever I hear any of their records it makes me feel emabarassed and slightly sheepish remembering the depth and intensity of my obsession.

I even used to copy his handwriting pretty accurately and I can still do it now (I've just tried).

The other thing is that I know every track from every album so well that I could sing them all in my head (If I wanted to, which I don't)

Kris England, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't see why anyone would not like XTC or Talking Heads. There aren't any bands that I absolutely loved and have seriously gone off, but there are a couple I thought were OK and really hate now. I used to like an Oasis song; now I think it is the worst on the planet. I used to like 2 U2 songs, have decided they are stupid pretentious gits and can't stand them.

Anna Rose, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

At least U2 isn't trying to delude their fans. Talking Heads like to pretend that their music is intellectual.

Adorno, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

dave q, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spiritualized. The Former Prophet Jason Pierce is now The Heretic Jason Pierce. Start as a gorgeous, textured, over the top, minimalist in arrangement but maximalist in melody sugary dronepop band extraordinaire, and then just go over the top and reverse your ideals. Feh! Feh! Friends tell me I have to see them live to appreciate the new album. I don't think so. To go from sugary dronepop to saccharine orchestrawk is simply unforgivable.

kate, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't think of anything I used to like because anything before dance music seems so long ago and due to my increasing lack of interest in rock I still have time for Mercury Rev or even Spiritualized, though more in a I like hearing their songs on the radio, or I went to see them at Glastonbury kind of way.

Ronan, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kate's dead right about Spiritualized. Used to love them but I can't stomach their recent stuff at all. Worst thing is its rubbishness seems to have permananently sullied my appreciation of their old stuff as well.

RickyT, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

At least Talking Heads had some good songs. Come to think of it, U2 are trying to delude their fans. I mean, they expect you to like their music, don't they?

jonathan thrat, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

rickyt, thats because theres this looming feeling in the back of your brain that there isn't really that much difference between the old 'good' spiritualized and the new 'bad' spiritualized, and you don't want to go back and check, in case its true

I was about to mention some old 80s stuff ... but suddenly I love it all again.

I think I just have impesccable taste ... and an immunity to being caught up by fashion :-)

... seriously though, probably the sound I'm most out of love with is late 80's / early 90's industrial like Skinny Puppy etc. which I used to revere, but can't be bothered to listen to.

phil, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know if I could ever bring myself to hate them, as their earlier stuff is so imprinted on my brain, but Kiss manage to embarass me further with every passing stunt they pull. For me, I think it was the Pepsi advertisement that really hurt the most, although that appearance at the Olympics comes close. Then they appeared at the Dick Clark gala (celebrating American Bandstand -- yeah, `cos ya know, Kiss were a 'dance band') and had a stand-in for Ace. Ugh!

If only they'd all perished in a bizarre hovercraft accident just prior to the release of DYNASTY!

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Prior to the release, not the recording! I couldn't live without "Dirty Livin'"!

dave q, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Kate's friends are dead right. You have to see Spiritualized live to appreciate the new album.

A Nairn, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They should have done it as a live album instead of a studio album, then.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I used to really like Muse. Then I heard Plug-In Baby, thought to myself, "Hang on, is that not the same as all their other singles?" then stopped liking them. Plus which, they have hoodies now. Hoodies. Christ.

Still, Unintended isn't too bad.

Mr Swygart, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ha ha Kate I used to hate Spiritualized and now love them!

Showing my age here: I was a big Procol Harum fan when I was a teenager (this is going back before punk) and they were the first band I ever went to see (great support: Viv Stanshall). I hate nearly everything by them now.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Another one: I don't necessarily 'hate' them now, but I used to be inexplicably really into The Mission (UK). With the precious exception of a few of their early singles and "Wasteland," when I hear them now -- let alone what they've (d)evolved into -- I wonder what I was thinking.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dinosuar Jr./ Sebadoh/ Pixies I moved to Western MA where all these bands started out. Realised their records aren't that good since the College Radio here still_plays_them_all_the_time. Its like American Top 40 for slacker indie kids.....

brg30, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"But Nate, _The Fragile_ is the best thing Trent's been involved with since "Sin"!"

Well, I do consider "Sin" not only Trent's best track but probably the only NIN track I don't feel embarrassed listening to six or seven years after first hearing it. But like I mentioned, I have certain associations with Nine Inch Nails and teenage angst, and I've simply outgrown the "PIGS DEATH FUCK GOD" attitude (though hey if Trent puts out an album that's at least 90% instrumental I'll look it up).

Placebo. I mean, the first album, and half of the second album were great. Dumb as a rentboy, but it just had that great radio eating quality. And then the third album came out. And then I realised how Brian Molko really does need a good hard cockpunching. And then it all just fell apart.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 3 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Smashing Pumpkins. RIP. I always thought and still think their best record was their first one: Gish. Some amazing hypnotic drumming and guitar and bass lines. Somewhere in between metal and indierock. The voice was new for me and was rather in the background and didn't harm the music too much. The only other album I liked after that was Mellon Collie. But now I really can't listen to Corgan's whining voice anymore. There is something self-important and pompous about it I can't take any longer. And the music after Gish degenerated as well. There was a song called Majonaise on Siamese Dream. That title (I don't remember the song itself) describes their music perfectly. Greasy and sticky. Stopping up my ears. I can say I truly loathe the Pumpkins now and I am happy they disbanded.

RATM otm for me. Though I honestly haven't heard them much since my junior high infatuation with them, so I can't say it wouldn't trigger some pleasant nostalgia to hear them now. But pleasant nostalgia wouldn't stop me from cringing a little.

Oh, I'm sure there's quite a few bands/artists that I was really into in junior high/high school that I wouldn't be able to stand now -- Mariyln Manson's first few albums, MXPX, emo stuff, the really terrible studio Phish stuff (most of the live stuff too I can't stand anymore), lots and lots of bad trance -- yep, Oakenfold, Sandra Collins, et al. -- but again, I have to admit that while I'd definitely cringe, the nostalgia wouldn't make it all bad. I had some good times listening to all this garbage.

There aren't too many bands/artists that I've been into since college that I now hate, though Bright Eyes might make me wince now.

Hate is too strong a word but a band I once loved more than any other was Yo La Tengo. And I ask myself what happened to them about 15 years ago? They became so bad and are still getting worse. Their music turned sour. What will their next album be? A drone of a fart?

Boy you've really got an ax to grind against them, huh? That's, what, three threads you've dug up now to express your disdain?

I get why someone might not dig these new experimental songs, but they've "become so bad and are still getting worse" is one of the more baffling Yo La Tengo takes I've read. There's a Riot Going On is a great record.

Sort of an orthogonal example, but one I think is sort of interesting--I've always loved Aesop Rock, but I can't stand to listen to his old (pre-2007 or so) material anymore. It's like listening a different, much weaker artist entirely, IMO. His delivery, flow & writing improved drastically since then.
