Saw these dudes play outdoors in the sun last month, and mostly thought oh-tee-tee oh-tee-em, but I would live in the desert for a week if it meant surviving by drinking out of the keyboardist's bellybutton.

tanlines sound pretty much exactly like tough alliance to me

?? way woozier, less new ordery, beachier, i like ToughAlliance fine tho

― plax (ico), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link
to be fair i've only heard one tanlines song -- whichever was the single from the EP -- and i thought it sounded exactly like tta
― corrine bailey the chef (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:32 (fourteen years ago) link
Man, I don't know, I was feeling Tanlines' remix work, but that new EP isn't really sticking with me. Maybe a few more listens...I have somewhat of a hard time seeing the Tough Alliance comparisons, but that's because I <3 TTA to death.
― larry_fitzmaurice, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:34 (fourteen years ago) link
the synth line in "real life" is like, just incredibly tta to me -- the vocals not so much tho
― corrine bailey the chef (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, I guess I could see that, but for me what separates TTA from something like, say, Wham, is the vocals (so distinctive).

yeah, def

^liking this an awful lot, and now v. much anticipating the lo-fi soul balladry that we gotta come up with a name for quick trend.
― FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 24 April 2010 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link
haha, this guy's list of influences sounds like my top ten on last fm
The songs are organized like a pop song but still disorganized and experimental enough that you can listen to it as a means of selfless possession. The music that I love to listen to is twofold-- there's noisy soundscape-y stuff like Black Dice and Alvin Lucier all the way to, like, D'Angelo and The-Dream. I always wanted to hear them at the same time.

Really, really liking "Era Extraña" now streaming on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2011/09/04/140122007/first-listen-neon-indian-era-extra-a. Probably album of the year (so far) for me.

Yes, "Fallout" is what lured me in - hearing one morning when clock radio alarm went off. Good stuff. Sad it took me so long to discover it.

New album drops in a few weeks. Interested to see where he goes with this album. Thought Era Extraña was a nice progression from Psychic Chasms.

― nashwan, Monday, 12 October 2015 14:14 (eight years ago) link
Very inspired album imo... Maybe not as strong as PC
― calstars, Sunday, 25 October 2015 18:48 (eight years ago) link
Really enjoying this. Jammed with ideas (more impressively given the original version of the album was apparently lost) albeit all within a specific aesthetic so he probably won't be expanding his fanbase and will almost certainly be left off year-end lists. Can't wait to hear a lot of this live. His vocals are noticeably better too (altho the bar was pretty typically low there).
Despite being an interlude that bass drop on 'Bozo' is one of the best moments. 'Techno Clique' also great.
― nashwan, Friday, 30 October 2015 10:22 (eight years ago) link
I... don't hate this?
But the bits I like best are basically Cut/Copy with a less irritating singer.
― La Düsseldork (Branwell with an N), Thursday, 5 November 2015 15:27 (eight years ago) link
this is one of my favorite albums of the year
apparently a chunk of it was recorded on a carnival cruise ship?
― gr8080, Thursday, 5 November 2015 16:59 (eight years ago) link
Now that I've had time to listen to this multiple times, I have to say it's one of this year's greatest disappointments for me. There's a lot going on, musically-speaking, but nothing coalesces to an appealing whole. I'm more than willing this a personal defect, but fuck it, I'm upset nonetheless.

Dear Skorpio Magazine, Baby's Eyes, and News from the Sun have been my top tracks off this lately

New album 'World Of Hassle' out in a few months, now just as Alan Palomo. Tracks released so far offer more (or at least as much) glitz but less grit than previous NI work/aesthetic. Nice to see he's still making these kinds of videos though.

new album is kinda ilm bait (very sophisti-synthpop), definitely his best work
― ufo, Friday, 22 September 2023 12:38 (seven months ago) link
I like this album but find the lyrics on it kind of obnoxious. The schtick worked for me on his previous record, but it feels clumsier and goofier here. Especially that first track... I guess partly it's the delivery too, the silly voice he's doing.
But you know what? The music's good enough for me to get over it. Especially Stay-At-Home DJ, that's the standout for me so far.
― OneSecondBefore, Friday, 22 September 2023 13:02 (seven months ago) link
his schtick is goofy for sure but it fits the music and works better than it did on the previous album to me
