TS: Golden Earring vs. Foreigner vs. Foghat

I mentioned to a pal that I'd picked up Golden Earring's Moontan, and he got all weirdly insistent that Foreigner was so much better and that I should be listening to them instead, "or even Foghat." I was kind of taken aback because, well, aside from digging this Golden Earring album, I don't have strong opinions on any of the bands, and he seemed almost upset with me for listening to them when I could be listening to these other bands…

When I asked him about it, he got all, "Whatever, man. I guess you'll just listen to whatever you want." I felt like I was in a weird high school flashback (except that I went to high school in the '90s). This guy's Icelandic—is there some sort of national Golden Earring hate that I don't know about? Should I really immediately drop Golden Earring and delve into Foghat and Foreigner?
