I wasted money on 1999 and don't plan to make the same mistake twice.

"I'm a Woman" is ok but they're never going to scale the heights of La Mouche (DJ Falcon or even Harry Romero remix). They're never going to scale those heights because it's the most perfect example of that mechanical grinding disco house subgenre I've been meaning to write about. Tracer was La Mouche the song you heard?

Did the tracks recordeded with Leroy Burgess make the cut? If so, how are they?

Andy K, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

That track the 'Sound of Violence' is good. But then, what does the title have to do with those lyrics about "wanted to be inside of you, when the sun goes down..." - Dodgy.

I received a copy of this a couple of weeks ago for an interview I had to do. Didn't like it at all the first couple listens. Was able to muster up just enough enthusiasm for it before the interview (by about the fourth spin it started to sound pretty decent), just returned to it today after several days away from it, and like it much, much better. The first track, "Hi Water" sounds completely fucked at first, but it's actually pretty great--it's got a beat that feels like it's being played on electronic hand drums or something with an odd time signature and really bubbly synthesizers before it slams into an anthemic chorus. Two Leroy Burgess tracks are on it, both are good (one nicely samples Al Green and has a very wide open, spacious production). Plus a really gorgeous ballad called "Nothing," a waltz-time thing with more nice synths, female- gospel chorus repeating "nothing" over and over, swampy harmonica flourish, Princely guitar solo...some fine stuff here. A few tracks still don't do much at all for me, and the Jocelyn Brown single sounds kinda forced, though maybe it'll grow on me too.

new one '15 Again' out now. not too keen on 'Toop Toop' but 'Rock Number One', 'Jackrock' and title track sound good. Pharrell does his usual boring breathy 'soul' thing on 'Eye Water' (no falsetto tho i think). the second half of the album goes darker, clubbier and weirder in contrast but 'Cactus' and 'Shame Shame Cherie' don't quite do it for me (tho might for 'minimal' fans).

I downloaded "Rock Number One" somewhere and think it's great -- rest of the album worth getting?

they've done a '45:33'-style running song for nike!

haitch, Thursday, 22 May 2008 01:43 (fifteen years ago) link

French house and electro-pop duo Cassius have collaborated with Nike to produce the second ever Nike+ Original Sport Music running track.

The first was, of course, LCD Soundsytem's pretty much immaculate 45:33

Crystal Method was first, LCD was second, Aesop Rock was third.

is there anything better than cassius, ultimately?

Cassius 99 was a great disco house track back in the day.

Plus I liked their production work on MC Solaar's Prose Combat lp

Got 15 Again today and had it playing a few times while I've been getting on with stuff. Really like Toop Toop, Jackrock and Cactus. In fact it's all really enjoyable apart from the slightly uncomfortable Pharell lyrics on Eye Water.

I don't love everything they've ever done, but "Feelings For You (Les Rythmes Digitales mix)" is one of my favourite tracks ever.
