Neil Young cover versions

So, inspired by immersion in Archives, I'm trying to assemble a CD of Neil Young covers and I'm a few songs short. Obviously he's not as widely covered as Dylan or the Beatles but I must be missing something good. Any ideas? So far it looks like this:

Emily Haines - Expecting to Fly
Pixies - Winterlong
Wilco - Burned
Sonic Youth - Computer Age
The Isley Brothers - Ohio/Machine Gun
Buddy Miles - Down By the River
Merry Clayton - Southern Man
The Meters - Birds
Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Cowboy Junkies - Powderfinger
Johnny Cash - Heart of Gold
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Helpless
Thom Yorke (or Flaming Lips) - After the Gold Rush

Matthew Sweet's "Don't Cry No Tears" is excellent too. It's on the Son of Altered Beast EP.

I want to say that there's a live, bootlegged version of Devo doing "Out of the Blue & Into the Black," but can't be certain.

tori amos covered 'heart of gold' on strange little girls - studio version not on youtube but this is a live performance where she def gets her galás on. not her best cover but i prefer it to the original which i think is really mimsy and wet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpkGFRePvWA

she also does 'philadelphia' and 'the needle and the damage done' live regularly...the latter not on youtube :(

lex pretend, Monday, 15 June 2009 13:15 (ten years ago) link

oh lol there's the whole concept behind the 'heart of gold' cover, she did in "in character" as TWINS into economic espionage. many batshit quotes here.

lex pretend, Monday, 15 June 2009 13:22 (ten years ago) link

Pixies also covered I've Been Waiting For You, which I like better than the Winterlong cover.

The Sisters of Mercy -- very early on -- did a track called "The Damage Done," which was a titular truncation of "The Needle & the Damage Done," but I think the similarities end there (i.e. it ain't a cover).

Neko Case, "Dreaming Man"!

...and of course Wayne and Craig did 'Like A Hurricane' with their next band, too.

Steve Stills has done a couple on various solo albums. 'New Mama' on 'Stills' and 'The Loner' on one of the awful late 70s ones ('Illegal Stills'?, 'Thoroughfare Gap'?)

Phil Will, Monday, 15 June 2009 14:11 (ten years ago) link

Oh, Duran Duran did a cover of 'The Needle and the Damage Done' too, but though it's clearly not good, it's not nearly half as comical as one might have hoped.

'Cowgirl in the Sand' and 'See The Sky About to Rain' from the Byrds reunion album.
'On the Beach' by the Walkabouts
'Mr Soul' from that Rush 'Feedback' covers album of their early influences

Dinosaur Jr's Lotta Love is funny, could annoy neil fans though

Heard Golden Smog do a great "Revolution Blues" once. They can't be the only one, 'cause that song rocks.

Mercury Rev did "Vampire Blues." Hmm, wonder why more people haven't covered Neil Young?

Waco Brothers do Revolution Blues, too.

Jack Logan covers On The Beach on his 2CD Bulk record. A relic from the 90s lo fi era that still holds up surprisingly well.

Like Tom Waits, Neil is eminently coverable.

Matthew Sweet also has a live "Mr. Soul" on the "I've Been Waiting" single, and a really good live "Cortez the Killer" with the Indigo Girls, Scarlett Rivera and Jane Scarpantoni on the Girlfriend: Legacy Edition set.

Besides The Bridge, there are a couple of surprisingly good double-CD tributes:

Was coincidentally just listening to a pretty amazing Danish art rock/metal band called Kellermensch who cover Don't Let It Bring You Down.

Wasn't there a Shimmydisc band who covered Out Of The Blue Hey Hey My My back in about 89 - possibly with Thurston Moore on backing vocals?

we went to the thursday show and a few highlights for me were emily haines doing " a man needs a maid" and mark kozelek doing "albuquerque" and "powderfinger". never thought i would ever see elvis costello cranking out the "cowgirl in the sand" guitar solos and actually enjoying it. watching/hearing lou and james blood ulmer were also highs for me.

we sat front row too.

Yeah, I love that version -- almost put it on the covers comp, but went with Undisputed Truth's version instead. There'll probably have to be a volume 2! By the way, what's up with covers of Down By The River when in the pre-chorus they're like "sha la la the weather"? That's not in the original is it?
