I thought the only one of these songs I didn't care if I ever heard again was "Summer of '69", but I listened to it just now and it's at least worth hanging onto even if it's overstayed its 25 year welcome. Yes, 25 years.

Bryan Adams can suck a cock. Run To You was okay back in the day, but don't play it to me now.

First person who plays "Heaven" will personally get booted out the pub by me.

Sacriligiously Dead (Bimble), Saturday, 23 May 2009 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Run To You is decent. Better than Summer of Cocking 69 anyway.

hahahah SUMMER OF COCKING 69

OH MY GOD REMOVE THAT SONG FROM THE EARTH I BEG YOU

Sacriligiously Dead (Bimble), Saturday, 23 May 2009 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

"Somebody".

"One Night Love Affair" is actually a great non-single from this hit-filled album.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 23 May 2009 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

so much HATE!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 May 2009 19:42 (thirteen years ago) link

"One Night Love Affair" was a hit in the US.

"Somebody," of course, and it isn't overplayed.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 23 May 2009 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Meh. This guy showed promise for unchallenging but catchy pop/rock with Cuts Like A Knife, then . . . long fall down.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 23 May 2009 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link

He peaked here, though. CLAK is all about "This Time."

besides, a guy like Adams doesn't have promise -- he has happy accidents.

Nah. Title track was catchy, almost jagged/edgy, and the video was kinda sexy:

A different discussion for a different poll, perhaps.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 23 May 2009 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

This Time was catchy, too, I admit.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 23 May 2009 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

"When you're lying here in my arms, I'm finding it hard to believe we're in heaven" has to be among the most awkwardly phrased lyrics in any hit song by a native English speaker. Still, "Heaven".

Sundar, Saturday, 23 May 2009 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

well, he is Canadian.

Dudes, "Summer of '69" is a giant among songs.

Run To You was okay back in the day, but don't play it to me now.

I agree with this -- used to love this song (and the video) but "Summer of '69" is my jam now.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 23 May 2009 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link

That was #2. It's kind of a weird one. Lyrically, it seems like a "Jack & Diane"-style boomer suicide anthem. However, the music just doesn't seem to jive with the sentiment for me, even in an ironic happy/sad way. Also, the end of the video is pretty ominous.

Sundar, Saturday, 23 May 2009 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link

LOL i agree with geir and alfred

The guy was surely still a d-lister before this album, though, so how did he score a Tina Turner duet with "It's Only Love"? (which is definitely one of the album's better songs)

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 May 2009 21:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Ewww, BA lookinb like a weasel on that cover. That's off-putting for starters.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Saturday, 23 May 2009 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

The "Cuts Like a Knife" and "Reckless" albums aren't all bad. Surely this album contained "Heaven" and I don't exactly love it for that, but it's a decent mainstream rock album. Much better than the balladeer he got known as in the 90s.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 23 May 2009 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Won't lie, I kind of love "Heaven"

xpost I had the 45 of this when I was like 4.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Not sure about the debut. Off of You Want It You Got It "Fits Ya Good" and "Lonely Nights" were decent AOR singles. "Lonely Nights" maybe better than decent iirc. Nice call-and-response backing vocal on the outro.

what was that interview where he was all annoyed because people made fun of him for only being 10 or whatever in 1969, and he was like, "THE SONG IS ABOUT SEX -- DOING 69! FOR FUCK'S SAKE!"

first, it was really weird to read bimble's first post on this thread (and his then ILX moniker).

second, "run to you" is actually a pretty cool song w/ an interesting guitar sound. added bonus: Lysette Anthony is the chick in the video (she's also the chick in Depeche Mode's "I Feel You" video).

Here! And I never even saw this thread until now! Would've gone with "Summer Of 69," followed by "Run To You," then probably either "Ain't Gonna Cray" (partly for the dumpster solo) or "Kids Wanna Rock."

xhuxk, Monday, 24 May 2010 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

Fifth place: "One Night Love Affair."
Sixth: Probably "It's Only Love" feat. Tina Turner

A landmark hard rocking pop album, obviously.

Always thought "Run To You" was a "Don't Fear the Reaper" rip-off/homage, though when I mention this people insist he ripped off "Refugee". I can hear it, but now I read he wrote it for BOC (they rejected it): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_to_You_(Bryan_Adams_song)

Lysette Anthony sure looks beautiful in all these videos, partially in an "80s Hot" way, but also in an always way.

According to Wikipedia, she was also the woman in Depeche Mode's I Feel You. And also in the movie Krull. I need to watch Krull.

"Run to You" is a fun riff to play while you're just mindlessly noodling on the guitar in front of the tv or something.

When my family moved away from our hometown, some of my dad's friends and colleagues put together a video that included a photo montage set to "Heaven." Later (though not much later), I heard the song in the opening credit sequence to the Christopher Atkins stripper drama A Night in Heaven. A weird pair of associations to have with a song.
