so much love.
i am clearly going to have to have another listen to the mans stuff, given that seeing this thread pop up all the time is going to do my fucking head in.

mark e, Friday, 1 May 2009 20:42 (fourteen years ago) link

got that ghost note just for the mark e side. and it patiently builds to awesomeness. so so good.

i like his take on edits in the interview. like, with hip hop and (esp older) house and tons of other sample-based dance stuff there wasn't really the need to call them edits when you take loops and do your own thing with them. maybe too much of this stuff is referred to as edits than should be. of course "edit" is on everyone's tip of the tongue lately. and there's threads and fights about it everywhere already so i'll just shut up about it now.

andrew m., Friday, 1 May 2009 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

in addition to that love the action mix psych mentions, a couple other of his mixes from '07 and thereabouts are rad. resident advisor and beats in space in particular. and peppered with his stuff.

here's that RA podcast

this beats in space may be my fave. the way it goes from funkadelic through this weird, meandering loops thing into the orb remix is pretty wild.

"T/S beardo vs slo-mo"

slo-mo!! went on a mark e beatport binge yesterday.

butter tickle (tricky), Friday, 1 May 2009 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks for the sendspace correction and thanks to everyone for making these mixes easy to grab.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 1 May 2009 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

So this is a thread for people who wish they were Theo but aren't nearly as good? Exciting. R&B Drunkie is my jam tho, I also had to pick up the JJ 12" to mix in with it.

pipecock, Friday, 1 May 2009 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i think what i love most about this genre is the bpms could be considered practically downtempo, but the way the tracks are arranged gives them that awesome chugging energy that makes you want to dance, at like 95 bpms (or faster)

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Real question: is this stuff analagous to chopped-and-screwed hip-hop?

Matos W.K., Friday, 1 May 2009 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't mean "does it sound like it," more "are there parallels." Seems like it to me. I like this stuff a lot, the little I've heard. And of course the Mark E RA Podcast was tremendous.

Matos W.K., Friday, 1 May 2009 22:47 (fourteen years ago) link

totally forgot about this dude from LA (from the podcast), anyone have any of his other records, i've heard big things and some sell for $$$ on discogs?

cole medina - love you inside out

matos lemme get back to you after i put on these mp3s and sip on some codeine

xxpost

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:11 (fourteen years ago) link

i have been mixing this stuff every other wednesday night at Seattle's Grey Gallery. Last night I started at 91bpm and moved through the Lissvik mix of Fever Ray into some Meanderthals, Rune Lindbaek, Cousin Cole, Revenge edits and more. Highlight of the set for me was going from Sabres of Paradise - Edge 6 into the Pressure Drop mix of Why Can't We Live Together. Set finished at 107bpms with the Revenge edit of One of These Nights.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

*set also included Reggie Dokes - Black Children of the Ghetto which sounded much better over the PA than it has on my headphones.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Reggie Dokes blows all these other guys away. He's possibly my favorite producer at this point.

pipecock, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

sounds like a good night. was the crowd into it? and woah has lissvik remixed anything else? xposts

butter tickle (tricky), Friday, 1 May 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, the crowd were into it. by 'crowd' i mean my dj partner, my girlfriend, 2 of her friends and the bartender.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:21 (fourteen years ago) link

d lissvik mix of fever ray isnt amazing

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 1 May 2009 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

The Red Rack Em mix for Cool in the Pool is great as well, treading the (arguably non-existent) line between this sound and Theo/Moodymann.

Tim F, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

what don't you like about it space cowboy?

The Macallan 18 Year, Friday, 1 May 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

matos: i think it depends on the artist really. some of the tracks are tripped out chopped up disco edits and some are super-linear slow house.

butter tickle (tricky), Friday, 1 May 2009 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

on the cole medina tip, if you can find his karen carpenter mix, get it! it's great

we were never being butthurt (donna rouge), Friday, 1 May 2009 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

what don't you like about it space cowboy?

i dunno, just not that interesting, i like the original more... again it's not BAD it's just not up to expectations (which are really high for d lissvik)

just used "slave 1" in a mix!

butter tickle (tricky), Saturday, 2 May 2009 04:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I always think Mark E being from Manchester makes a lot of sense cos his stuff feels so like the Unabombers type of music, in a really huge way. I recommend people here check out Electric Soul 1 and 2 (not heard some of the later CDs.) I don't usually go for downtempo "nu soul" or whatever but those mixes are the more than acceptable face with lots of house/disco stuff too...

Local Garda, Saturday, 2 May 2009 09:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Man, I forgot how good "R&B Drunkie" is -- I've been looking for that for ages, too. Thanks!!!

pshrbrn, Saturday, 2 May 2009 10:41 (fourteen years ago) link

my parents play the fuck out of all this stuff. when i was young and experimenting with cool edit pro dad used to get me to loop his favourite bits from his records. just wish i had a delay and and a filter. could have been 13 year old moodymann.

Crackle Box, Saturday, 2 May 2009 10:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i have been mixing this stuff every other wednesday night at Seattle's Grey Gallery

brotherlovesdub, what time? I play every Wed at Havana, across the street, from 7 to 9 p.m., just playing whatever I want, sit-down radio-DJ style. I should obv. swing by if you're on after 9!

Matos W.K., Saturday, 2 May 2009 21:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i start at 9 and mix until 10:30, then again after midnight. we're losing the weekly after may and will go to a monthy in june. since i mixed this week, I won't mix again until the week after next. next week is dj struggle and d'jeronimo though, and they play all sorts of incredible deep house ala reggie dokes, prime numbers etc. great dj's.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Good to know, thanks.

Matos W.K., Saturday, 2 May 2009 22:36 (fourteen years ago) link

not to be mr spam dude but roman flugel's mix here is in this style and v nice

Local Garda, Sunday, 3 May 2009 13:07 (fourteen years ago) link

since there is a little bit of dj cole medina / scott k discussion on the thread, anybody have a copy of his (limited to 1000) edit of james brown's "satisfied", as seen here?

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 3 May 2009 13:38 (fourteen years ago) link

grabbing now, ronan. btw, i don't think mark e is from manchester. in/around birmingham maybe?

andrew m., Sunday, 3 May 2009 18:12 (fourteen years ago) link

ah my bad, I was sure that he was all this time.

Local Garda, Sunday, 3 May 2009 18:15 (fourteen years ago) link

would looove to hear more unabombers btw, all i seem to have is that 'electric chair saved my life' from last year. which is good, but probably wouldn't have connected them to this 'slo mo' business based on the mix or anything

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Sunday, 3 May 2009 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I guess it's not really connected, I do think specifically Mark E's mixes are quite similar to theirs though, just the source material for his edits and stuff.

Local Garda, Sunday, 3 May 2009 19:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I re-listened to the Roman Ronan mix last Friday by coincidence and noted how codeine-disco-y it was!

rebel without a cape (sic), Sunday, 3 May 2009 22:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been away from a computer over the long weekend, but thanks for all the links, uploads and recommendations!

jamie where is that initial quote from?

It's from Dicky Trisco, from his mix on Cool in the Pool with Pete Herbert
http://www.coolinthepool.com/radio.html

i think what i love most about this genre is the bpms could be considered practically downtempo, but the way the tracks are arranged gives them that awesome chugging energy that makes you want to dance

This nails exactly what I find compelling about this stuff.

For my money, Beat Down and Deja Vu are the best Mark E tracks. So good.

And there are a ton of Revenge tracks to stream here http://soundcloud.com/the-revenge

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 14 February 2014 18:54 (ten years ago) link

seems like a disco edit to me, but i'm not sure a new soundstream track can be seen as proof of a thriving edits scene or anything

― hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, February 13, 2014 5:16 PM (2 days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

they're disco edits by definition, I guess. but not THE genre. they're disco edit in a way moodymann and theo is disco edit.

Mark E's new album is good but I prefer the Black Country Roots EP.

6th Borough Project new album has a few solid numbers on it, notably "Read My Mind"

What else is going on here that's good?

the late great, Sunday, 5 April 2015 21:20 (nine years ago) link

maybe a bit, but afaik he's always hovered around the 110's

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 5 April 2015 21:24 (nine years ago) link

i kind of stopped following this scene because i never really felt like listening to a whole set of it and also because it's too hard to mix w regular paced 120-ish stuff

Such a tremendous amount of this stuff if one goes digging, particularly edging into nu-disco and funky house domains.
