I would like explanations from anybody voting for anything further down than 'I'm Bored'.

ambulance chaser (S-), Thursday, 2 April 2009 07:17 (fifteen years ago) link

One of the first records I ever bought was Blah Blah Blah, long before I knew anything about The Stooges or the Bowie history or any of it. I just thought "Real Wild Child" was a cool song sung by a weird looking dude.

No way I'd vote for that out of this list, but that was my introduction to Iggy Pop at age 13.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 April 2009 07:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Torn between all of the Lust for Life singles. I really want to vote for "Success" even tho it's not the best one probably.

Vanessa del Rio Ferdinand (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 2 April 2009 07:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Going early, it would likely be something from Lust for Life. Going later, it would probably be something from Brick by Brick or maybe "Wild America." Not sure yet.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 April 2009 07:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Interesting, Johnny. Since 1987 "Real Wild Child" has been (mostly) the intro song to this TV show:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_(TV_program)

It was definitely my (and I daresay many others) first exposure to Iggy.

Butt Town. No explanation necessary.

Srsly, tho, I gotta go with The Passenger.

Same goes for me, but replace RWC w/ "Home." Damn, I haven't listened to Brick by Brick in well over ten years. Has it held up at all?

I got on a kick of listening to "Candy" last summer, but I haven't heard the rest of the album in probably as long as you have.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 April 2009 07:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Passenger, duh.

Second place: Some Weird Sin

thirdalternative, Thursday, 2 April 2009 12:08 (fifteen years ago) link

As sacrilegious as it may be, I went for Livin on the edge of the night, just because I like to sing it in the shower in my best Bowie voice.

"Five Foot One" = funny

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Thursday, 2 April 2009 12:11 (fifteen years ago) link

First one is the best one. More Bowie than Iggy, though.

Would like more reviews of Brick By Brick; I saw i real cheap the other day.

Hmm, listening to Blah Blah Blah right now and it sounds nowhere near as cringe-worthy as I'd thought it would in 2009. Surprising.

On deck: Brick by Brick.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 April 2009 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I LOVE "Shades."

Weird thought. Brick by Brick is as old now as the first Stooges album was when Brick by Brick came out. Jeez.

The Passenger, but I'm not sure I don't prefer Siouxsie.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 2 April 2009 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I have a rather irrational soft spot for the Instinct-era singles "Cold Metal" and, especially, "High On You" -- simply because that was when I first saw Iggy live and I listened to those songs a lot then.

But it's difficult to argue with The Passenger.

Duke, Thursday, 2 April 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Passenger's just one of those songs that sounds exactly what it seems to be about: riding the U-Bahn in Berlin, stoned. Beautiful.

That's certainly the consensus regarding the subject matter of the song.

anything further down than 'I'm Bored'

I like the next two, from Soldier! Always thought that was a good album, in a not-quite-New Values sort of way. Sort of like Afterburner to Eliminator or something. Still gonna vote for "I'm Bored," though.

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 April 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Not that anyone asked, but American Caesar is way damn underrated.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 3 April 2009 03:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Gotta go with "I'm Bored," but i have to say that I adore "Wild America" (great, great riff).

Alex in NYC, Friday, 3 April 2009 23:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I was surprised to find when the album came out that no members of Sonic Youth were playing on "Wild America," because it's a total SY type riff.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 April 2009 23:48 (fifteen years ago) link

"Lust for Life" won't win because of Trainspotting and that ad for a cruise ship line, but I think it should. In a perfect vacuum, it's so good.

Just the drum sound makes it untouchable.

laying | (goole), Saturday, 4 April 2009 06:52 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a total SY type riff.

Hadn't occurred to me, but it strikes me as being too clean-sounding to be SY (although now that you mention it, it is pretty similar to the riff of "Titanium Expose" on Goo).

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 4 April 2009 11:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, it lacks the disorder of a real Lee/Thurston riff, but it's kind of coming from the same place.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 April 2009 11:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not sure if he played on the American Caester album, but didn't hirsute string-bender Wattie Watchell (sp?) play with Ig circa that period? (And wasn't he later busted in some kiddie-porn computer scam ala Garry Glitter?) He now plays for ::::barf::: Stevie Nicks.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 4 April 2009 11:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Caeser

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 4 April 2009 11:44 (fifteen years ago) link

The internet says Brick by Brick, but he may have hung around for American Caesar in an uncredited manner.

He's been with Stevie longer than some ILMers have been alive.

I voted for "Lust For Life" ahead of "The Passenger" but I need to remedy my ignorance of solo Iggy outside of that album, because my third choice would be "Candy" which I LOOOOVE and I figure if I like that I'll find things to like in the rest of the catalog. I mean "Candy" has an overheated lyric, and I giggle when I listen closely to Iggy struggle to hit and hold the notes, but I love the way the chorus bursts out of the clipped-guitar verses.

Euler, Saturday, 4 April 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago) link

To my ears, "Candy" is absolutely the worst thing he's ever done (and that includes licensing "Lust for Life" to Carnival Cruise lines et al.)

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 4 April 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link

ahem

Straight from the Top of My Dom (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 4 April 2009 15:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's not great either -- but it doesn't make me wince like "Candy" does.
