Gratuitously Offensive Hardcore/Metal: C or D/S&D

Now that I've bought The Eminem Show and discovered that I actually like it, I'm going to have to focus my oft-humorless self-righteous lefty rage at something else instead. So I've been thinking a lot lately about the likes of M.O.D./S.O.D., The Meatmen, A___ C___ and other noisy little hellions that like making fag jokes and rape jokes and other calculated attempts at offending people. Is it punk-style satire of dunderheaded aggro-jock attitudes, an exhibition of smarmy "hur hur we are SO UN-PC" button-pushing humor with no real sociopolitical agenda or a bunch of legit ultra-conservative assholes who really do think that beating up gays and raping women is like way fuckin' cool dude?

Oh man I am not even gonna get started on this one. I think way, way more about this question than can possibly be thought of as healthy or constructive.

Anal Cunt started off as sonic misanthropists and evolved a sense of humor about it; why anyone would be offended by this I have no idea. Everyone Must be Killed is simply an awesome album and in retrospect the logical leap forward from grindcore (their petulant childnessness is also probably the appropriate response to Napalm Death's petulant ultra-seriousness). SOD is obviously and admittedly a parody of the meathead id, but musically they too were way, way ahead of their time. The Meatmen are about as funny as the Dead Kennedys (i.e. not) and musically just as useless, which may or may not be the point. I don't find any of this stuff offensive in the least. Bands like Vaginal Jesus are so inept they're not worth thinking about. GG Allin is just pathetic. Gaybashers and date rapists are more likely 311 fans than Anal Cunt fans anyway. There have been zillions of ultra PC hardcore bands (or bands that don't even use english, so there's no chance of being offended) in the wake of SOD and A.C. -- why not just listen to them instead?

The first band to spring to mind would be the Mentors, as in: "Heterosexuals Have the Right To Rock," "Bend Up and Smell My Anal Vapour" and "Find her, Feel her, Fuck her, Forget her."

...and GG Allin, of course.

Anal Cunt's schtick is just that, schtick. A crude and tasteless way to get a cheap laugh, perhaps. But their lyrics and song titles clearly aren't to be taken seriously. It's deliberate to take the piss out of some very self-important, pompous folks within their respective scene. Get Seth Putnam in private (and sober), and a dollar-to-a-donut he'll tell you as much. Anal Cunt might not be Randy Newman or Frank Zappa, but they're not Skrewdriver either.

More to the point: if Anal Cunt were as dumb and ultra-redneck as some accuse them of being, would they even know who Leonard Peltier is or about the movie Birth of a Nation? As someone upthread pointed out, date-rapers are more likely to be 311 or Limp Bizkit fans than Anal Cunt fans. And rednecks, skinheads, and Shrubya-lovers are more likely to listen to Hank Williams Jr. or Celine Dion.

Speaking of AC - I actually DID see the 'gayest guy on Earth'. He was carrying a poodle and talking on his mobile about the Liberty X concert. Then again, I saw someone the other day with a Dandy Warhols hoody

I suppose the Frogs have to fit in here somewhere, though they're not quite hardcore or metal (well, sort of glam-metal at times). They're probably the only band I think of as offending me in a pleasurable way. And the show of theirs I saw at CBGB's ca. 1994 was one of the greatest rock shows I've ever seen. (Their records are REALLY inconsistent, though.)

Stuck in my head for too long recently: the Child Molesters' "13 Is My Lucky Number."

I thought that SOD was just a goofy boy joke until I heard MOD; now, I'm not so sure. The song "A.I.D.S." especially annoys me, because the riff is so amazingly good, and the lyrics so banally stupid and evil.

The Frogs rule, by the way.
