Let's talk about Moloko!

How great is the "Sing It Back" remix with "I Feel Love"? Has anyone heard the rest of the remix album? It seems like an exciting crew.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I prefer it to the original "I Feel Love" in some ways because the original is hypnotic and blissful and passive while this reimbues a seductiveness and longing which propels the song forward but only to "bring it back" when we "sing it back" and so the static tension only heightens.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

"Let's talk about Moloko!"

I'd rather not.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Moloko is great! Their first album is stunning and keen.

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

First album is fantastic. And what great sounds. For me captures the atmosphere Dieter Mayer said he was looking for with Yello. A kind of musical childrens toy.

phil, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

First album is very good IN PARTS. Things To Make And Do is very underrated, erm... even by me (rather annoyingly this is one of the LPs I left in storage in UK). The hit version of "Sing It Back" was itself a remix, yes? Roisin Murphy has a great voice - she probably belongs on that cameo whores thread actually.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Moloko are not a good band. 'Sing It Back' is a bad song. However, I like their song 'The Time Is Now'.

I kind of like the idea of Moloko, but the rubbishness of their music lets the side down. Does anyone know if the two of them are still a couple?

DV, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

No, they've broken up as a couple. Haven't heard the remix album yet, but on the strength of Things To Make And Do, perhaps they should break up as a group too.. very bad album.. disappointed me because the lead-off single was so good. The first album is excellent though.

EdwardO, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I tried really hard to like Moloko, but I just couldn't get through a whole album. That album called I Need A Doctor, or whatever, was really gloopy and irritating.

Revived because they've got a new single out soon called "Familiar Feeling" and an album called Statues and I want to know what it sounds like - anyone?

Also, I'm troubled by the above lacklustre panning of Moloko - they're one of my favourite bands, always interesting, weird pop music sneaking in where it shouldn't be...couldn't pick a favourite album cos I love all of them, Things To Make & Do is hugely underrated etcetc.

So. Moloko. Fabboko or Crappoko? And is All Back To The Mine any cop?

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 24 January 2003 03:13 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm a big fan of tight sweater - it's hot and weird and sexy - but i heard an advance of statues, and it's boring crap. all of the personality removed - much like when morcheeba went down the gurgler.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Friday, 24 January 2003 06:08 (seventeen years ago) link

you mean there was a point when Morcheeba resided somewhere other than the gurgler? i think fucking not.

is statues really that crappy? i mean, they always produce their own stuff don't they? have they really sucked their own extremely strong personality out of their own records? am confused.

Listening to Roisin's first solo EP produced by Herbert and it is ace ace ace.

jsk baby (jsk baby), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:05 (fifteen years ago) link

OMG! MUST HEAR NOW!

"Familiar Feeling" was great, BTW! I have yet to hear a single by these guys that wasn't fantastic.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Roisin has a solo EP?!?!

Produced by Matthew Herbert?!?!

I am squealing with excitement!

(Dan if you haven't heard "Forever More" you must, you would love it)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

That sounds good. Most Moloko I've heard has been sort of mediocre, but I love her turn on the first Handsome Boy Modeling School record.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 21 January 2005 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

moloko are excellent

Go out and buy one then, there aren't many to go round. The first EP is pretty raw sounding pop, not very dancy considering the parties involved.

You are either insane, or you haven't been listening as well as I have... ;-)

They are brilliant. Message ends

The EPs seem to only be v.expensive 12" but they are beautifully packaged, I understand the whole album is out in EP form early this year and then album follows later on. WANT.

Oh, I definitely haven't! I've only heard a few tracks, mostly the ones with hip-hop guests (Kweli etc.).

Moloko & Talib Kweli? You've got to be mistaken...

So, would anyone agree that the following is the dumbest move ever made by a major label -- Warner Bros. kicking Moloko off the label in America just before their second album came out EVEN THOUGH "Sing It Back" was a #1 Billboard dance hit?

wish they'd packaged it with a little more joi di vivre, but yeah I'll definitely be getting that sometime soon.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 31 July 2006 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I went to the store today and had no idea the best of was out. Why do they not promote these things? Anyways, I was giddy. "Fun For Me" is absolutely fantastic, and "Cannot Contain This" is crazy infectious. Oh and PURE PLEASURE SEEKER THE SEXIEST SONG EVER OR WHAT? but they have the wrong mix of "Sing It Back" :(.

The one-two punch of "I Want You" and "Over and Over" is incredible - the way the strings on the outro to the former bleed into the latter is a masterclass in pop songwriting

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 April 2018 19:23 (two years ago) link

I have a couple of Moloko albums, but I see 'em more as an act that could be strong on individual tracks but not over the course of a full-length.

Recently discovered the Salt City Orchestra edit of 'Knee Deepen' which makes me wish I'd listened to All Back To The Mine remix comp properly when it came out. (Almost) needless to say this is nothing like the original version.

Yeah, this. Statues is close to perfect and almost as good as Overpowered. None of the others come close.

Statues is certainly my favourite Moloko album and I probably like it more than any of Roisin's solo work too. such an incredible album

“Sing It Back”, repurposed as a gospel workout, lyrics slighly tweaked.

Soweto Central Chorus of the Salvation Army ft. Samthing Soweto • Bring It Back

(or here, in footage from the concert itself, starting at 55:12): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJxmbsgD-Fc

Don’t know if this version predates the much more faithful (!) Sha Sha cover or not (it looks like it was recorded last year as well) - Samthing and Sha Sha are only one step removed from each other obviously.
