well, apart from what he did for that awful thing with jim/john (like it matters) belushi in that was pap. i reckon he deserves a better soundtrack rep than he has though - always pleasantly surprised by wall street & talk radio, frequently get "Equalizer & other cliffhangers" out, "the leopard son" offa discovery channel is even good etc etc - just agree with me. tick the box

Rumblefish. Rumblefish, Rumblefish, Rumblefish.

I agree with rh, it's all about "Rumblefish" (not least for "Don't Box Me In," with Stan Ridgway). "The Rhythmatist" (sp?) wasn't too bad either.

I loved his score for Fresh (and the movie was quite sharp too), but the actual soundtrack disc that came out's got nothing but middling early '90s hip-hop on it. Hopefully someone will put out a best-of- the-soundtracks disc, a la Ry Cooder, one of these days.

I had Copeland and Stan Ridgeway's "Don't Box Me In" from the Rumblefish soundtrack running through my head the other day. I wonder whatever happened to old Standard.

Stan's still doing well, writing and recording some great albums. All the info you need here.

Nah, that would be Francis Monkman.... great late cheeseprog on The Long Good Friday soundtrack, done quite a few others since.

Richard Sinclair (ex Gryphon) has more taste, but less Moogs.

"see no evil hear no evil" is one of the best although you can't get the music on disc. also features pre-fame kevin spacey as moustachioed villain. "help, i can't see what i'm doing!" "sorry?.." comic geniiius

Holy cow--I had no idea he was that prolific.

Had no idea he is credited to so many soundtracks ... The Rhythmatist is a bit corny but damn do the drums / compositions hold up even after 20 + years - still remember buying it and being absolutely enthralled ...

No mention of Earth Girls Are Easy?

Sometimes I like to sit down with a glass of wine and a good book, then put on the soundtrack to "Good Burger."

Jesus, that Rumblefish soundtrack. Amazing stuff.

There should be some sort of 80s movie soundtrack supergroup - I mean, imagine, Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter, Vangelis, Copeland, Oingo Boingo/Danny Elfman, Jan Hammer, and all the John Hughes soundtrack band stand-bys, getting together and Jammin some serious tunes! Yamaha and Korg would sell out their inventory!

I loved the music he did for the original Spyro the Dragon game. Might be some of my favorite video game music ever.

Would love to find some kind of bootleg of his score for Fresh. Fuck a bunch of "Music Inspired by the Film" Wu-Tang ass shit.

Yeah, same thing as the "Ghost Dog" syndrome. Fuck these rhymes, I want pure, unadulterated RZA!

Some of Copeland's are good, but too many suffer from the "hey, I got a Synclavier!" syndrome.

taking sides: the "Ghost Dog" syndrome vs. the "hey, I got a Synclavier!" syndrome

I used to love the Sypro games just because of the music. Had no idea it was the ex-Police drummer. Excellent

I got the 'The Rhythmatist' LP at the 'world's largest garage sale' in Evanston, IL and just loved it. Still gets played often, and for some reason I respect his mining of African musical diaspora over many other musician's attempts.

Just picked this up and it is very very good:
http://www.discogs.com/Stewart-Copeland-The-Stewart-Copeland-Anthology/release/3275179
Only complaint is that it does not have "Our Mother is Alive" from the Rumble Fish s/t - probably my favorite of his solo pieces. Though it is incredibly wide-reaching - I hadn't heard a big portion of this before.

His 2005 "live" album Orchestralli (I put it in quotes b/c it seems very much overdubbed) is also really good. Definitely something I need to pull out more often.

Ooh I need to listen to those. SC's drumming makes me happy like few others. I read some drumming blog dissecting elements of his style last year which was super toothsome for my non-drummer self.

Mr. Copeland on his dad -- which, thanks to the excellence of the former ILXor's interview, draws out a little more than he might have wanted to say, maybe.
