according to iTunes, his has a 20-minute bonus track, which seems...out of character.

jesus that song/video :/

KitevsPill, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 09:42 (seven years ago) link

So they're going for a more pop vibe. Let's see how it plays out, I still love everything they've done.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link

I'm all for them going in a pop direction but they need to remember the tunes. Get My Bang is probably my least favourite song they've done.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 15:16 (seven years ago) link

I really like the song n general, still trying to get my head around that title/hook tho

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 25 May 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link

sounds like hot chip

last track on the anohni album reminds me of early wild beasts

I don't mind the new single, but I also hope it's a red herring

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 26 May 2016 05:07 (seven years ago) link

(xpost) Yeah - I got a Hot Chip feel from it too!

it's the backing vocals that made me first think that

Strongly disagree about Limbo Panto. Much prefer the way they handled their pompous tendencies on Two Dancers and Smother. Present Tense had good ideas but it's not as great imo.

simmel, Thursday, 16 June 2016 16:07 (seven years ago) link

otm Listened to Two Dancers again some days ago and for the time it is playing it really convinces you to be one of the finest albums of recent years. Such a well-balanced and constantly high level of songwriting and production.

I like this better than Get My Bang

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Thursday, 7 July 2016 17:53 (seven years ago) link

It is better than Get My Bang but it doesn't really excite me at all like anything from the first three albums. They seem to have lost the magic somewhere.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 7 July 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link

I like Big Cat. It's Wild Beasts on autopilot but that's cool with me.

simmel, Monday, 18 July 2016 01:24 (seven years ago) link

Does any other band cover sex in a similar way? They seem to have a pretty unique spin on machismo. Their key virtue imo.

got my download code, sounds pretty good so far! don't hate 'get my bang' in the context of the album

bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

interesting album closer

bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Friday, 29 July 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

Interesting how?

Steve Reich In The Afternoon (Against The 80s), Friday, 29 July 2016 18:46 (seven years ago) link

this LP reminds me of St Vincent's self-titled record

in twelve parts (lamonti), Friday, 29 July 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

well it accounts for almost 1/3 of the running time for one, xp

bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Friday, 29 July 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

well i take that back apparently it's a bonus track/companion piece

bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Friday, 29 July 2016 19:23 (seven years ago) link

some sort of ambient thing?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 29 July 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

yeah like an ambient/demos/acoustic/lofi sound collage

bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Friday, 29 July 2016 19:33 (seven years ago) link

So uh I kinda love this album

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 30 July 2016 08:23 (seven years ago) link

It's produced by John Congleton so the St Vincent thing is understandable.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 31 July 2016 06:27 (seven years ago) link

This is a slight improvement over Present Tense for me but it's nowhere near the quality of the first three albums. I don't really have any use for the first four songs. Tough Guy does sound a lot like St Vincent, it sounds like a bad impression of Birth In Reverse. I do really like the run from Celestial Creatures to He The Colossus but that's about it.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 31 July 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link

"2BU" is the standout for me.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 31 July 2016 15:43 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I like that one a lot. Those 80s synths are a nice touch.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 31 July 2016 15:46 (seven years ago) link

Oh wow: I actually came here for the first time in years to start a thread asking after a survey of quavery voices — edgy things in the Wild Beasts / Parenthetical Girls / Frog Eyes kind of vein — and this was already sitting on top of New Answers!

ንፁህ አበበ (nabisco), Sunday, 31 July 2016 17:09 (seven years ago) link

I generally agree with your assessment, KP, though I think "Present Tense" is very solid. Overall I feel the lyrics on the new one are really weak, which puts me off. From what I've read this is sort of an album they wanted to get out of their system.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 31 July 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

Getting big Simple Minds vibes from this one

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 1 August 2016 10:16 (seven years ago) link

Bonus tracks/b-sides are kicking around, and they're top-notch as always. "Maze" is a beauty.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 8 August 2016 03:50 (seven years ago) link

Yes, I think "Maze" is wonderful.

michaellambert, Monday, 8 August 2016 18:23 (seven years ago) link

Where can I get Maze? Can't see it on iTunes.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 8 August 2016 20:56 (seven years ago) link

I have it on the bonus 7" that came with the deluxe vinyl.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 12:39 (seven years ago) link

*loathing* this so far. what the living fuck happened to these guys?

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

I'm not blown away but loathing is v strong. Last one was a mellow grower. What's upsetting you?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 9 August 2016 20:55 (seven years ago) link

i'm kind of enjoying the butt-rock touches

goole, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

i dunno man. you're right though.. i need to stay away from it and re-listen in 6 months. i think the Pitch4k review nails it

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/22139-boy-king/

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 21:04 (seven years ago) link

I don't hate the new album but I'm so disappointed in how much they've fallen off since Smother. First two records are perfect and Smother is really great but they've completely lost me on these latest two. Even the best songs on these albums don't come anywhere near the quality of their earlier albums.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

That Pitchfork review is just about spot on. 6.8 is pretty generous though.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 9 August 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

It's their Hot Space

the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 07:39 (seven years ago) link

The first album is horrific imo other than Devil's Crayon. Two Dancers was where they really got it together, Smother was a continuation and then the two most recent ones are merely OK.

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 09:27 (seven years ago) link

The first album is horrific imo other than Devil's Crayon

i can see that album would jar greatly if you don't like the particular histrionics on it but HIS GRINNING SKULL is surely the best song they ever made

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 09:45 (seven years ago) link

(i don't know why i shouted that song title, sorry if that sounded hostile)

Rae Kwoniff (NickB), Wednesday, 10 August 2016 09:49 (seven years ago) link

They haven't duetted properly since Smother, have they?
