Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:23 (fifteen years ago) link

luckily for us cb vs ne-yo isn't really an either/or proposition

nearly went for 'because of you' automatically but kinda feel like giving love to 'single' or 'mad' (good choice of single, that).

'addicted' is such a great lost non-single

lex pretend, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

IMPOSSIBLE.

I chose "Sexy Love" over "Because of You" and "Miss Independent."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:26 (fifteen years ago) link

this poll was inspired by the realization that "miss independent" is one of his best singles

1. so sick
2. closer
3. miss independent
4. because of you
5. sexy love

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah "Miss Independent" is one of those songs I just cannot get tired of no matter how many times it comes on the radio.

The stic.man from the hilarious 'Dead Prez' albums (some dude), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

'miss independent' isn't even one of the best songs on its parent album! (and i like it)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

the verses are so great

cause she walk like a boss
talk like a boss
manicured nails to set the pedicure off

also the drums are awesome i bet kanye is jealous

myspace password secretary (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not sure Kanye has a concept of what awesome drums sound like anymore. I like the way it kinda jacks the organ sound from "Flashing Lights," though.

The stic.man from the hilarious 'Dead Prez' albums (some dude), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i just said that cuz it's a way different drum sound than anything on the radio right now, and we all know that kanye is obsessed with this tribal drum thing now but ne-yo has basically beat him at his own game

myspace password secretary (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Ne-Yo and Stargate have basically spent the last 12 months making me forget how much I used to want them to go away

The stic.man from the hilarious 'Dead Prez' albums (some dude), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link

why were you crazy before?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

up around the time of "irreplaceable" i was probably in the same boat as alex

myspace password secretary (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

I've been in bed with him since "Let Me Love You."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

2007 was a pretty weak year for them, most of Stargate's beats were "Irreplaceable" knockoffs and Ne-Yo had kind of a sophomore slump.

The stic.man from the hilarious 'Dead Prez' albums (some dude), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I won't disagree. Because of You is some weak sauce.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

But "Because of You" itself is brilliant.

I love "Single" so much, that's meta done perfectly right there.

I can't make choice for this poll yet.

man, if he'd only release "Fade Into the Background" or "So You Can Cry" as singles!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 13 November 2008 02:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah those are great, I also love "Back To What You Know". And was "What's The Matter" not on the album? That's awesome too.

Favorites on the new album so far are "Lie to Me" and "Fade Into the Background", then probably "Closer" and "Miss Independent." I'm gonna go with "Miss Independent," but it's close.

all of his best songs are album tracks:

Mirror
Make It Work
Say It
So You Can Cry
Crazy

... I probably would've voted for "Because of You" or "Do You".

two months pass...

I'm not sure Kanye has a concept of what awesome drums sound like anymore. I like the way it kinda jacks the organ sound from "Flashing Lights," though.

Really? I always thought it sounded jacked from "My Love" to be honest.

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Talking about "Miss Independent" there.

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

eh, who's to say what influenced what, maybe all 3 tracks have nothing to do with each other, but imo "My Love" sounds like a very synthetic strobing keyboard riff, whereas "Flashing Lights" and "Miss Independent" both having kind of a lush harmonic organ texture with more similiar rhythmic cadences.

some dude, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah "my love" is so chopped and stuttering, the "flashing lights"/"miss independent" one is much more fluid i think

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

both are really fun to play air-keyboard to (although i haven't tried to figure out how to play on an actual keyboard)

some black dude (k3vin k.), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

The keyboard riffs on "Flashing Lights" and "Miss Independent" have a similar syncopation that's much different and more complex than the more straightforward 8th-8th-quarter note rhythm on "My Love".

The Reverend (rev), Friday, 13 February 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

love the stuttering keyboards on "Miss Indepenent". didn't vote in this pole, but would have voted for "Mad".

heard "hate that i love you" on the radio tonight and realized it's probably in my top 5 ne-yo singles. it shouldnt really be much but its really great - sounds like a backstreet boys song to me, which i dig

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 14 February 2009 04:15 (fifteen years ago) link

It's a great song!

ilxor, Saturday, 14 February 2009 07:33 (fifteen years ago) link

it is, but i prefer 'good girl gone bad', which is essentially the same song but more complex and conflicted

waka flock*a*teens (some dude), Saturday, 20 February 2010 14:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Very funny. I wouldn't say it's his best but I might be willing to call it his most endearing. Great tune, regardless.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 20 February 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link

i was surprised that it had no votes too tbh when i looked back at this last night, but it had only been a single for barely a month when this poll was made -- it's a strong #6 for me after the big top 5

J0rdan S., Sunday, 3 April 2011 06:58 (thirteen years ago) link

the only one that's an unambiguous reference to a phrase coined by a specific song is "all we do is win," the others are just garden variety phrases that happen to be titles of other songs. unless you think Ne-Yo has created a rich tapestry of quotes from songs by Dr. Dre ("been there, done that"), Lisa Stansfield ("all around the world"), The Spinners ("one of a kind"), The Postal Service ("nothing better") and Brian McKnight ("the only one for me") and isn't just spouting cliches.

bernard so icey (some dude), Sunday, 3 April 2011 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

well yeah -- i mean clearly those other two are a bit more ambiguous but any r&b singer naming their song "one in a million" is gonna bring ppl directly back to aaliyah & idk "best i ever had" is pretty recent enough that it seems like slightly lazy songwriting idk

bernard so icey (some dude), Sunday, 3 April 2011 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i honestly think the title of the song could have been "best i ever had" OR "one in a million" and they only went with the latter because the former had been the name of a hit more recently

bernard so icey (some dude), Sunday, 3 April 2011 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

also there are prob like 30 songs named "one in a million" so what's one more

J0rdan S., Sunday, 3 April 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago) link

j0rdan's gift for hilariously microbanal musing apropos of nothing and no one in particular is honestly one of my fave ilx things - let us all cherish that fleeting shit

otoh they would make a superb series of philosoraptor jpegs

r|t|c, Sunday, 3 April 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

haha i drive (a lot) in a car that only has FM radio so microbanal musings on overplayed radio songs are unavoidable on my end
