I dunno, probably. But surely in this case he added the lyrics after the fact, after the song had already been written and recorded so I don't why they would put his name there. Maybe one of the other four people on the thread can help us.

Yes they do. The default position for royalties is that lyricists get their share even for instrumentals, unless they reach a different agreement. By the same token, if there's both a lyricist and a music composer, royalties for printed lyrics go to both co-writers.

In this case though, BMI has the song registered twice (one credited to Evans and the other to Evans/Lees), so if they're doing they're accounting correctly I'd think Lees would get royalties only for vocal versions. And yes, he must have added lyrics later, my copy of the record has no lyrics and doesn't give his name in the credits.

it's kind of crazy to me how good the village vanguard tapes sound -- obviously the engineer knew what he was doing, but this must've just been a band that recorded extremely well, everything perfectly placed.

Ph man, great thread, new to me---was just thinking about local jazz station's rerun of a Night Lights segment, on Evans coping with the sudden death of La Faro at the trio's peak (Spoiler: eventually coped as well as possible musically, judging by these selections; offstage not so much: heroin cont. and "La Faro's sister-in-law reported seeing Evans walking around New York in Scott's clothes.")
