skot, who is max groenthal? i bought a record at thrift store by him a couple years ago. tracklisting includes: 'sailfish', 'white satin lady'

i love that there is a band called "arica". that was/is neo-gurdjieffian spiritual group started by this chilean dude, which counts john lilly among its alumni

birtles and goble are talking to me about jesus, but somehow despite their honorable intentions i feel like they're trying to touch my bathing suit area

del (dell), Friday, 7 November 2008 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks for the link, dmr. wow.

i have no fewer than two acquaintances, including an ex-coworker who was involved with that group!

there used to be an awesome account online of some guy's experience with them...as well as candid memories of being part of that heady climate in big sur in the seventies... and driving drunk to esalen. it was on a geocities cite, so i fear it may have disappeared forever. anyhow, i'm a sucker for those sort of narratives.

del (dell), Friday, 7 November 2008 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

"my bathing suit area". is this a common phrase? my friend used to say it all the time and i thought she was the only one, until i heard it on 30 rock last week.

jaxon, Friday, 7 November 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

i guess i picked up on it from eighties-era public service stuff about being molested. y'know, like there's probably a mr. t record from that period that quotes that phrase.

in any event, i guess i'm glad that "30 rock" writers are on the same page with me in some sense

i put i am the moonlight on my old columbus mix from way back when. here's what i wrote about it then:

John Villemonte – “I Am The Moonlight” – John is or was a member of the religion of the light and sound of God, Eckankar. The leader or Mahanta or living ECK master of Eckankar is Harold Klemp. And he LOOKS like a Harold Klemp. Which is kinda cool. He really does look like he should be giving you detention for not paying attention in algebra class, and yet, he is a total master of ECK. And you don’t just become an Eck master overnight you know. You have to study your ECK off. Sorry. Back to John. Some people have one great book in them. Or one album. Or one great day where everything they do and everyone they touch is filled with the joy of timeless and deathless unselfconsciousness. A perfect day can never be premeditiated. It must breathe on its own. John Villemonte had one great song in him. It aches with belief and sunshine. It moans with contentment. You could die or be born to this song.

scott seward, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

(i think sang froid was the only ilxor to hear that mix, so that's why i don't mind putting it on here. i want everyone in the world to hear that song.)

scott seward, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

(the arica and m.frog tracks are really just for an intro vibe. i was actually gonna fade them out after a minute or two, but then just said fuggit...)

scott seward, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

that's SRI Harold Klemp.

Show some respect, man.

del (dell), Friday, 7 November 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

It's funny you should say that (about the John Villemonte track). It's my favourite so far (still listening to part two). Is it off his first album? I found a webpage which mentions him and he is quoted as saying his first album is his favourite of the eight he made. I suspect it might not be because the song sounds quite professionally recorded, whereas he mentions the first one being done on a 4-track with no effects or mixing. But a wonderful song, yes.

dubmill, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I particularly love the flute and piano towards the end.

dubmill, Friday, 7 November 2008 22:00 (fifteen years ago) link

this version of i am the moonlight is on his 2nd solo album. his first solo album, i think, he made with a group and i've never heard that one. (the song is on both albums.) anyway, this version is found on this album from 78/79:

http://popsike.com/pix/20071129/280179094680.jpg

scott seward, Friday, 7 November 2008 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

you can buy a cd copy of *THIS* from his website. or at least you could. the whole album is nice. (and you can probably get the first album there too. be a lot cheaper than a vinyl copy.)

scott seward, Friday, 7 November 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Ah yes, I've found it. All the albums are still available. I'll be placing an order.

dubmill, Friday, 7 November 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, like that waxonomy website always blows my mind...people post obscure thriftstore record finds there, and then their family or the original artist will show up and be like, "yeah, we still exist. go to my website and invest in my latest cd".

del (dell), Friday, 7 November 2008 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I wound up ordering that John Villemonte cd after hearing that tune, & he sent a nice note along with it.

Thus Sang Freud, Saturday, 8 November 2008 01:41 (fifteen years ago) link

thank you scott!!

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 8 November 2008 01:57 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, and i should mention that tim f. starting that one thread and asking for stuff that sounded like a "desultory beach party" is what got me started on this mix. i don't know if that's what it actually sounds like, but that was the original inspiration. (and i had a ton of stuff left over that i couldn't fit. kinda hard to stop once i started.)

scott seward, Saturday, 8 November 2008 02:40 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, and i've been looking for an excuse to put a karen alexander song on a mix for a long time too:

This Is The Thread Where I Tell The World How Much I Love *Karen Alexander* And Her Album *Voyager*.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 13 September 2009 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

numero group has i am the moonlight on a new comp of theirs! i saw it cuz gottpunch revived the numero thread. it's cool that more people will hear it. hope it doesn't end up in a car commercial. for years that song felt like a secret to me. like someone whispering something sacred in my ear.

i put it on my columbus mix that i eventually sent to sang freud. that's the first time i ever felt like sharing it with the wider world. (or, er,a wider world of one, anyway.)

Christopher Columbus Said The World Is Like A Ball Spinning Round In Endless Circles It's Not Flat At All People Laughed And Said You Poor Fool Now What's Your Game And He Said You're Never Gonna Mak

scott seward, Sunday, 13 September 2009 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, this mix isn't online anymore cuz maria's radio station computer was wiped out by a virus. i think that's why anyway. and we don't have digital copies, i don't think. i love this mix. well, i would say that. but i think it really works as a mood. what that mood is i couldn't say. i made a new hotheads mix last week. put it on tape. now i just have to get it on the computer. along with the mix i made to accompany the late 60's/early 70's west coast country rock thread. more ilx threads should come with their own mix.

Scott, I need your help. Is the Bill Quateman song Keep Dreaming from "Shot In the Dark,' 'Just Like You,' 'Self Titled,' or 'Night after Night'? Also I'm having a hard time finding information on Sand? I found Randy Pie's Highway Driver, which is great funk rock. Thanks again for making these mixes, just when I think I've run out of new music, a flood gate opens.

Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 19 September 2009 22:01 (fourteen years ago) link

bill quateman song is from his self-titled debut.

sand is this sand. they only made one album. the one with a sandy sandwich on the cover. the whole album is GREAT. two one-sided discs for some reason. doesn't usually sell for very much.

Just the tip of the iceberg, but I made a quick list of underheard albums that I go back to again and again for whatever reason. Some apply to this mix/thread, some don’t, but whatever. I’ve also talked a bunch about most of them on ilm or included them on a mix that I’ve posted here. These are all a part of my 70’s non-hard rock rock canon. didn’t include more obvious stuff. In 2009, my holy trinity would probably be ian matthews, michael franks, and poco! Who would have guessed? I used to listen to a lot of crass records. Anyway, for what it’s worth:

Allesi – s/t (a&m – 1976) (probably my favorite brothers of the 70’s. or maybe that title goes to the gurvitz brothers. can’t decide.)
curved air – phantasmagoria (wb – 1972) (really, everything by them in the 70’s. like babe ruth. or savage rose.)
curtiss maldoon – s/t (capitol – 1971)
jackson heights – king progress (mercury – 1970)
howard werth & the moonbeams – king brilliant (mca – 1975)
vance or towers – s/t (a&m – 1975)
gary farr – addressed to the censors of love (atco – 1973)
danny o’keefe – breezy stories (atlantic – 1973)
string driven thing – the machine that cried (charisma – 1973)
east of eden – s/t (harvest – 1971)
molkie cole – s/t (janus – 1977)
bloomsbury people – s/t (mgm – 1970)
redeye – s/t (pentagram – 1970)
danny o’keefe – american roulette (wb – 1977) (hell, really everything from the 70’s.)
trefethen – am I stupid or am I great?/it’s all mom’s fault (1980) (recorded in the 70’s though.)
gallagher & lyle – the last cowboy (a&m – 1974)
john randolph marr – s/t (wb – 1970) (also, bubba fowler’s album *and then came bubba*, but I think that might have been 69 or even 68. can’t remember. The marr album is essential for nilsson fans.)
country joe mcdonald – hold on it’s coming (vanguard – 1970) (i can’t even begin to describe how much I love this album. it is the end and the beginning of something wonderful. )
song – album (mgm – 1970) (essential.)
cowboy – s/t (Capricorn – 1977) (again, who am I kidding? I love everything they ever did. Possibly one of the top ten most underrated/underheard major label acts of all time.)
boxer – s/t (virgin – 1975)
george geddes – obituary (ua – 1971) (but, you know, everyone needs son of obituary from 1972 too.)
thomas jefferson kaye – s/t (dunhill – 1973)
mckendree spring – s/t (decca – 1969) (oops, 1969. But you can substitute it with *3* or *tracks* from the early 70’s.)
facedancers – s/t (paramount – 1972)
barnaby bye – room to grow (atlantic – 1973)
dane donohue – s/t (Columbia – 1978)
tim hardin – painted head (Columbia – 1972) (one of my heroes, and his 70’s stuff doesn’t get near enough praise. And it’s all worth people’s time. )
tim hollier – message to a harlequin (imperial – 1968) (1968? but it’s so good. and I can’t find a copy of skysail from 1971 and I can’t afford a copy of his 1970 s/t album which is also awesome.)
dave morgan - morgan (ampex – 1971)
mick greenwood – living game (mca – 1971)

Wow Scott! Now Now I have a mission. Of all of those artist I only have Thomas Jefferson Kaye and Gary Farr. And Tim Hardin's first two records. Seriously this is much appreciated. My recent discovery, which I bought due to the nice cover is Gary Ogan & Bill Lamb's Portland.

Jacob Sanders, Sunday, 20 September 2009 20:22 (fourteen years ago) link

I just found out mac gayden was a member of Area Code 615. Danny O’keefe's Breezy Stories is a record I've passed over at this one record shop for the past year, due to the cover. I bought and I haven't stopped playin git since. Also Barnaby Bye's Room To Grow is an amazing record.
