Juliana Hatfield C/D S&D

the girl needs her own thread. i fell in love with the cover of hey babe, and when i investigated some songs playing in the record store the next day, i found they were from one of the hey babe singles. so i bought the CD and i really got into it. i had never heard the blake babies, and i still only have a cassette of rosy jack world, and i only ever really listened to that early version of 'nirvana'

i loved 'become what you are' and it remains my fave juliana album. although 'total system failure' has given it competition. 'only everything' had some good songs, but it seemed to be the beginning of a long period of successive identity crises for the woman. i felt so bad for her, trying to find her voice, niche, whatever, and putting out fairly dull records (please do not disturb, bed) i was pleasantly surprised with the double release. as i said, juliana's pony i think is lots of fun and exactly the kind of record she should be making. beautiful creature seemed to continue along the adult contempo path she'd been on for a few years, although i'd say it was stronger than the previous two records.

i have not heard the blake babies reunion record, ive heard its terrible, but i'd still like to check it out.

SEARCH: all versions of 'nirvana', 'put it away' (my sister cd single), 'feed me', 'i got no idols' (and the piano version on 'for the birds' 7"), 'houseboy' and the guitar solo in 'hotels'

DESTROY: well, there are are many but i wont go into that because i lurve her...

I never cared much for Rock chicks, I am probably giving away that I am sexist. It isn't a conscious choice though. I just don't like the contradiction.

i cant believe i fronted on my girl... only everything is solid as a rock. 'universal heartbeat' is the worst song and even that is tolerable.

Ron, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (sixteen years ago) Permalink

i fell in love with the cover of hey babe

Me too, rather predictably.

Haven't listened to that album in ages but I'll say Search that one plus the first four songs on the 3rd album.

Become What You Are snared me as a doe-eyed teenager, although the lyrics to "For the Birds" made me chuck then and makes me actually vomit up my spine if I hear it now. Eventually I read to many joint interviews with her and Evan Dando and their collective fluffiness got too much.

Lynskey, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (sixteen years ago) Permalink

S: 'become what you are' (especially 'spin the bottle' + 'i got no idols'), backing vocals on 'it's about time' and 'my drug buddy' by the lemonheads.

funnily enough Amazon reports about 5 albums since then ! where on earth did they come from ? 'bed' is meant to be a classic, a la 'become...' but i see there's also one called 'juliana's pony' which was written in 1 week, and one called 'beautiful creature' which indeed she is/was. oddly she popped up as a waiflike singer-with- accoustic-guitar on My So-Called Life a good half decade back now.

anyone heard 'bed' then ? the follow-up to 'become' was pitiful if memory serves, so yeah destroy that.

Ron, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (sixteen years ago) Permalink

well, bed was not as bad as i thought. without all the high expectations from when it was new. search: these lyrics thats it, im staying home
dont even try to make me go
if you put on your leather pants
yankee boy in a cowboy hat
do you even know what you're doing?

apparently you think it's pretty cool
but that bad boy style is wearing you
did you learn how to herd cattle in prep school?
could you just pretend you don't know me?

take off those leather pants!
you can't go out like that!
you really don't look 'phat'
i can't be seen with a man wearing leather pants

look into my eyes where the truth is
do you realize you look stupid?
get rid of those leather pants!

i can't go out like that!
you really don't look phat
i can't get down with a yankee in a cowboy hat

she is fab.

I love BECOME WHAT YOU ARE LP. Blake Babies' GOD SAVE THE BLAKE BABIES or whatever it's called is surprisingly good too.

She is quite tasty but also talented.

I too fell in love with the girl on the front of Hey Babe, as recent posts might ahve indicated. Also, the one who claimed to be a virgin at 26 or whatever. Then some sleazeball came along and said 'Hmm - I knew Juliana Hatfield before she was a virgin'.

Anyway, the only record of hers I've really liked was a BBC radio session acoustic version of 'My Darling'.

sigh. sigh.

Just played Hey Babe after maybe 8 years. And, after some heavy duty brain-adjustment during the first song to *that* indie- guitar sound, I was surprised to learn it's still very good. Lovely melodies, clever lyrics. Time to hit the second hand cd-shops.

My 3 favorite Juliana albums in order: 1-Become what you are (that 90's college rock sound that I love so) 2-Beautiful Creature (her most "adult contemporary" album, but features some of her strongest songs) 3-Only Everything (the rare album where the second half is considerably better than the first. There's a terrific bootleg recorded in Ballard, WA 9/17/93 that features most of her best songs from her first 2 albums.

yay mark im listening to this ballard show right now. its fun. she's hitting the b-sides pretty hard, which is grate. i just realized the best thing ever about juliana is that she wrote a lyric which contains the phrase 'stoopid poopid'. also she is a spazzy singer, which i love

The "greatest hits" tracklisting is pitiful.

I think I only like the Hatfield tracks no one else does - "Breeders," "Let's Get Married," "Swan Song," "I Want To Want You."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:41 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

I love 'I Want To Want You', along with 'Live It Up' off of Bed.

The good stuff of Beautiful Creature is SO GOOD. search songs 1-3, 6, and 11. esp.#11,'Hotels'. I always liked Only Everything too, plus the first too.

The Blake Babies reunion was maybe 1/3 super, search 1, 4, 5, and 10.

Wow, I never realized I was so into Juliana Hatfield... who knew?

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:42 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

Search: "Out There," "Trying Not to Think About It," "Nothing Ever Happens," and the title track from the forthcoming Feel It, maybe her best song.

Burr (Burr), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:00 (fifteen years ago) Permalink

i don't like 'want to want you' very much but i think all those other songs are great, milo. i would have to agree that the g.h. album isn't so hot. i haven't listened to it really after the initial once or twice through, although i should check out the 'new' songs on it again.

does anybody have a lead on a clean copy of this 'god's foot' (?) thing???

and nobody has mentioned "Everybody loves me, but you" which is where it all stared (for me).

Ah mems. Newcastlte Riverside club. She was too loud (well, the band were, she was way too quiet herself). The last one I got was the 'hairy' one. One of my first purchases from CDNow back in the day. Dawn put her hand in the car glovebox, brushed against the CD and pulled her hand out very quick. "Is that meant to be....?" she asked. "Yeah, Probably" said I.

di, Sunday, 6 February 2005 03:57 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

I've been listening to a bootleg copy of 'God's Foot' a lot lately. search 'Mountains of Love', 'Perfection', 'Eye 2 Eye', a few others. Tne sound quality is lousy, but it's fine by me.. it sounds that much more illicit and rare, which probably lets me gloss over some of the flaws. Honestly, though, 'Perfection' might be her best rock single ever.

The new album from last summer isn't that exciting.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:04 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

in honor of this thread, I just put on in exile deo.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:38 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

I've unconsciously ended up with every album she ever released. I never meant to be a Hatfield completist, but now I guess I have to keep it up. (this is helped by their omipresence in discount used bins, I think. ditto Yo La Tengo)

The first four tracks on Bed are so great: "Down On Me," "I Want To Want You," "Swan Song," "Sneaking Around."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:44 (thirteen years ago) Permalink

milo, me too, and i also blame the fact that each and every album was readily avaliable for $6-$9 used around town.

there were a few tracks on exile that i really liked, but also some i quite disliked. i'll give it a go tomorrow and summarize.

haha, the cover of hey babe.

the strange angle, that lost faraway look in her eyes, the shot up her nostrils, those pert lips. yeah, i probably fell in love with this circa 1995. nice picture on the back of the case as well

the record still holds up nicely. a great number of hooks, some quite touching vocal deliveries, and generally, some pretty nice songs. 'the lights' is an old favourite and is still very pretty.

Charlie Howard, Monday, 16 April 2007 12:55 (eleven years ago) Permalink

yeah she was deft in her time. although the "become what you are" picture, like on the reverse of the cover, gets me even more than the hey babe cover, i have to say.

Nice timing, I've been listening to "I Want To Want You" over and over again lately. Not for any emotional or nostalgic reason, I just love the way she delivers "What a bad judge of character you were."

Rich Smörgasbord, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 09:05 (eleven years ago) Permalink

'my sister' is cool, man!

what's really quite creepy about that first journal entry (bed review) is when you realise he doesn't actually know her. i'm glad i've never developed an infatuation with someone so intangible

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:48 (eleven years ago) Permalink
