Freud would have a field day with you.

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

and you, mr libre (and, of course, WONDERFUL ME!)

gareth, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

although i wonder if freud would have had a field day with himself (disregarding the fact that he was full of shit anyway)

i bet Borbetomagus would have a field day with shania though, and they are welcome to her (who are they anyway, sound like a bunch of norwegian people that dress as ogres and spray fake blood on their crowd of disaffected teens, in between extended prog passages).

shania? the sheryl its ok to like?

gareth, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

You're sort of right abt Borbetomagus Gareth, only they're much more like free jazz noize grunge biker types (their line-up is two saxophonists and a guitarist). Apparently they play on the new Sonic Youth alb.

I can't choose between them and Shania, tho'. Both gd.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Borbetomagus sat behind me at a concert during the New Music America Festival in 1988. They complained that the catalog for the festival described someone else as being uncompromosing and boundary smashing, or something like that, while they were not described in similar terms. Ever since, that has negatively colored my impression of them, but it's not the sort of thing I would listen to now anyway.

I don't know what Shania Twain sounds like.

Almost 14 years ago. I'm old!

what a good move! This new album might not be a 'straight to the bin' affair after all.

I'm seeing Borbetomagus play in Boston in two weeks, in fact! The same cannot be said for Ms. Twain, but you know, anything's possible.

Trying to think who the midway point between these two acts would be.

diamanda is not midway between any two points, i don't think. conventional rules of euclidean geometry need not apply

j/k, obv. nowadays everything seems to fit into an odd future realm

(borbetomagus was probably the most overwhelming thing i ever saw live)

rusty_allen, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

wow, I haven't seen borbetomagus live in like 20 years

I should go to that boston show but I won't

bandcamper van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 27 May 2011 18:10 (twelve years ago) link

they're playing Boston and Northampton, and then Montreal for Suoni. no other dates booked, as far as i know.

geeta, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

they'd prolly get a decent crowd in providence, I should try to make that happen

bandcamper van beethoven (Edward III), Friday, 27 May 2011 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

dude, just come to boston. or we can all go to northampton. my guess is that the audience in northampton will be me, you, byron coley, thurston moore, and the 30 dudes from sunburned hand of the man (they're opening)

geeta, Friday, 27 May 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

and me.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

i'd totally hit the northampton show tomorrow, but my favorite art teacher from college is in town, and i want to spend some time with her. she teaches in cologne now so i don't get to see her much.

i'm all about the show on sunday, though.

scott, where exactly are you based these days? we gotta hang out!

geeta, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

i am in beautiful greenfield. you should come to my record store sometime. take a daytrip to wonderful western mass.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

i will totally take a day trip to western mass sometime! your record store looks awesome.

is the kid playing a harmonica in that photo? punk rock! he should totally jam with my 11-year-old nephew. my li'l nephew is super cool. he owns four guitars and he can really shred--he studies guitar solos by watching youtube videos on repeat, and he can play 'enter sandman' at double-speed and stuff. his favorite bands are metallica, megadeth, and slayer.

geeta, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:30 (twelve years ago) link

that's my oldest, rufus, in that picture. and my other one, cyrus, is the one hanging with the records.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

cyrus and rufus sat in with improv jazz dude dave gross last week.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

nice! they are adorable. i bet they'll love borbetomagus!

geeta, Thursday, 9 June 2011 16:15 (twelve years ago) link

i'm already having second thoughts about going tonight. i'm such a wimp. it's just that they start so late there and end so late. by the time borbetomagus go on i could be toast. i get up very early in the morning...

i might save up my energy for friday night and the opportunity to see ilx's own tarfumes the escape goat rock out.

scott seward, Thursday, 9 June 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

aw. c'mon, scott! you can do it!

geeta, Thursday, 9 June 2011 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

i'm old...and weak...

scott seward, Thursday, 9 June 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

Yet to see 'em live.

Is it just me or does Donald Miller look a bit like Green Gartside in that album sleeve?

my ears are still ringing, in a good way

geeta, Monday, 13 June 2011 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

i was forced to drink cold soup out of an ice luge right before borbetomagus started...long story. this night was totally noise, 100% noise

geeta, Monday, 13 June 2011 05:19 (twelve years ago) link

so gutted i missed the show with rangda before xmas, snowed in with work and actual snow

straightola, Monday, 13 June 2011 11:32 (twelve years ago) link

yeah--imagine three guys who look like they could be your dad, dishing out some of the most spectacular noise you can imagine. there were something like 15 effects pedals on stage...the two saxophones are run through all kinds of effects, like what'd happen if you ran all your jazz records through a juicer under extreme amplification

geeta, Monday, 13 June 2011 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

Anyone caught the Borbetomagus doco A Pollock of Sound?

"Filmmaker Jef Mertens brings a raw, urgent, and unpolished vision focusing on a band that has spent almost four decades defining and redefining the boundaries of music.
Pioneers of improvised noise music, Borbetomagus are known for the aggressive, double saxophone attack of Don Dietrich and Jim Sauter and the guitar noise of Donald Miller.

The band members tell their story with the help of artists, writers, photographers, and filmmakers that include noted critic Byron Coley, drummer Chris Corsano, guitarist Thurston Moore, Hijokaidan and others.

Includes archival footage and previously unreleased recordings."

etc, Monday, 17 July 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I reviewed it.
