Has a headline act ever been booed off?

I remember reading some Lynyrd Skynyrd interview and whatever survivor they were talking to went on about how they made the Who look real bad when they supported them. Has a headliner ever been SO outshone by their support that the crowd just went "fuck em" and yelled them off? It must've happened sometime...

"Why would they come to our concert just to boo us?"

Guarantee that Skynryd never blew the Who off the stage, no matter what that pederast Artemis Pyle says.

I believe Cake were booed off stage at a shitty festival outside Toronto once.

saw this happen twice in cardiff barfly:

yourcodenameis:milo supporting ikara colt - everyone turned up to see ycni:m after john peel and rock sound were going crazy for them, no one wanted to see ikara colt, they played sloppy while the frontman threw himself and his microphone around the stage. then, four badly-received songs in, he pipes up with "thank you bristol!"
didn't last long after that.

also: test-icicles - they acted like dicks, had their backing tracks on an ipod which also had westlife, backstreet boys and lostprophets on it. they played 'lounge versions' of each of their singles and, as the booing grew louder, devonte hynes shouts out "you just paid us ten quid!"
total five-car pile-up of a gig.

Given that the Quadrophenia tour, on which Skynyrd opened, was a mess, it's a real possibility.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 2 August 2008 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Metallica was booed off on Dynamo Open Air 1996 when they failed to show up and thought it a good idea to do a live-via-satellite-over-the-PA interview instead where they jokingly talked about about-to-be-released Load and played two-minute snippets of 2x4 and The House Jack Built. 90.000 metalheads waiting in front of the stage almost went on a rampage when it dawned on them that this was not a joke or an intro for the billed headline act. Things could've gotten really ugly if Venom hadn't taken over and completely killed it. That moment there they lost their remaining Dutch, German and Belgian fans.

which moment, the moment where they failed to show, or the moment where they played the audience Load material?

Closest I ever saw was Smashing Pumpkins at Lollapalooza in 1994 or so. Billy Corgan went on a long tyrade about how he's the "voice of a generation, a generation of shit" and basically sounded like a brat. Then he stormed off and the crowd started a chant of "fuck you" he came back and apologized, saying "You meant fuck you in a good way, right?" What a loser.

Bob Dylan must have been some sort of headline act at Newport, wasn't he?
