Is there a thread on the band Growing?

If so point me towards it and ignore this, they are a useless search, if not please discuss them here in a classic/dud manner or what have you.

I don't know them, have they made any good records or are they just ripping Black Dice off and what I've heard happens to be the few times they actually pull it off?

how meta of me

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 20 July 2008 01:56 (nine years ago) Permalink

they are not ripping Black Dice off at all. listen to The soul of the rainbow and the harmony of light on Kranky, that's their best record. love the new stuff too though. great fucking band.

I've only heard one track off Color Wheel (I think it was 'Peace Offering'? Whatever one they had a video for) and it was good stuff, would like to hear more.

MacDara, Sunday, 20 July 2008 22:41 (nine years ago) Permalink

Cool. I found Color Wheel pretty cheap, will probably be in my next order. AMG seems to like it too

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 2 August 2008 20:41 (nine years ago) Permalink

Color Wheel is their worst record. It's the first record where they start using rhythms and hadn't quite mastered it yet. The upcoming album, All The Way, finally gets it right, so be sure to cop that when it drops.

As for the drone stuff (the first three records), I would say that His Return is the best of the best of the best.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 2 August 2008 21:16 (nine years ago) Permalink

Go buy that instead, and wait for the new record to get into the Black Dicey stuff.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 2 August 2008 21:17 (nine years ago) Permalink

Ahh too late! I was feeling impulsive... anyway I could probably use some unmastered rhythms, for my own self esteem not least. They're a duo now right? Or have they always been maybe

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 2 August 2008 21:25 (nine years ago) Permalink

always have been

Soul of the Rainbow kinda bored me but I like their new stuff (Lateral EP and All the Way)

I like it a lot. Got a free download coupon with the vinyl it has an extra track. Pity the album is only at 160 bitrate.

I wish I'd listened to Whiney, Color Wheel really isn't that impressive. Maybe I should give it another try but on first it felt pretty bland and unfocused. Will check out the new one anyway.

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 14 September 2008 21:16 (eight years ago) Permalink

I like all the records I've heard (about half of them) and am going to check out their live show at ATP New York next weekend. Anyone here seen them before? How are they in the live setting?

kinda lame opening for boredoms a few years back

exceppppptttttt with no real drums and no real sense of like direction or anything.

those are two of my very favourite noise/psych records so it might be worth checking. I got interested in Growing from a couple of tracks on a Kranky comp, but I found "Color Wheel" really disappointing as a lot of it was quite ugly and intrusive sounding.

I really like the new album.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 13:18 (eight years ago) Permalink

I like it too, but calling it Black Dice meets VCN is an oversell

nu black dice meets Rebore 0 at best

I like it too, but calling it Black Dice meets VCN is an oversell

it wasn't really meant to be, like, an endorsement. more like "these dudes were probably listening to VCN and black dice a lot when they recorded it because it's a passable imitation."

REIGN IN FUDGE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:38 (eight years ago) Permalink

I wouldn't compare it to vision creation newsun just because its so non-rhythmic even if the overall mix and individual sounds approach parts of it

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Thursday, 9 October 2008 04:14 (eight years ago) Permalink

alright, i just got live (at free103.9 and north six) and these are the hippie drones i was looking for.

The new Kevin Douch solo album (Total Life - Ken Bradshaw) is available from the Social Registry website. Took me while to track it down.

I'm still getting to grips with it but there's definitely a distinct progression akin to pre/post Color Wheel Growing between this one and his first solo effort. Which I guess isn't entirely unexpected.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the "'Beaches and Canyons' but without the rhythms or any sense of direction" descriptions, and yet I think I like "All the Way" more than "Beaches and Canyons". B&C without the rhythms would still be pretty great, but I think the shorter songs on "All the Way" have a lot to do with it ... Black Dice in 2003-4 would lose the plot and find it again about two or three times over the course of a fifteen minute song, but Growing go six minutes and out and I think I prefer the simplicity of that style.

It does not remind me of Black Dice, it reminds me of that Hisham album, soft circle or whatever

I'm hearing this band for the first time, with no sense of what I should expect, and it is totally knocking me out. (Specifically The Sky's Run Into the Sea.)

So this band got back together and made a new record this year - two songs, 40 minutes. It's a lot closer in style to their earlier, dronier records.

Based on a couple of listens - I like it, though not as much as the first few albums. In any case I think this band is one of the most underrated acts of the 00s.
