makes me wonder, but harder to breathe, this love, and the rihanna joint are all top quality

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:52 (ten years ago) Permalink

tough b/w this love and makes me wonder

also she will be loved

voting this love. pretty sure i still know most of the words to it.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 July 2008 07:53 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah the top two are pretty clear; i had a second wind of this love love last year but i'll hear everything again before i vote

tremendoid, Thursday, 10 July 2008 08:06 (ten years ago) Permalink

I couldn't stand anything these guys put out until 'won't go home without you', mostly because of the chorus melody, but also because dude is totally believable as a really determined sociopath stalker.

G00blar, Thursday, 10 July 2008 09:58 (ten years ago) Permalink

"This Love" is a top karaoke joint.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 10 July 2008 10:07 (ten years ago) Permalink

"Makes Me Wonder" for the win -- that bridge!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 10:14 (ten years ago) Permalink

"Makes Me Wonder", but I like all of these incl. "She Will Be Loved".

Tim F, Thursday, 10 July 2008 12:46 (ten years ago) Permalink

agree that This Love is a jam

Wake Up Call is so underrated.

Tape Store, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

I mean, the lyrics!

Tape Store, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

I think people don't like the lyrics - I think they're great!

Tim F, Thursday, 10 July 2008 22:57 (ten years ago) Permalink

Would that all bands with modest (artistic) aspirations were this tasty (and sexy!). "This Love" is undeniable. Even Simon Reynolds likes it. But I gotta go with "Makes Me Wonder" for the way it speeds past Adam's lies. He ain't wonderin' shit.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:23 (ten years ago) Permalink

don't really care about "Wake Up Call"'s lyrics either way, cool intro attached to a really monotonous song. good as an album cut but lousy single choice.

some dude, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:32 (ten years ago) Permalink

if "Kiwi" had been a single, it would've been their very best: salacious and slithery.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:37 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah, the problem with "wake up call" is that it's kind of boring musically

The Reverend, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:54 (ten years ago) Permalink

1. makes me wonder
2. this love
999. that tripe with rihanna

wtf is with rihanna? she totally sucks now ever since she's been fucking chris brown

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 10 July 2008 23:59 (ten years ago) Permalink

and he sucks too what is up with that "forever" song.

The Reverend, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:12 (ten years ago) Permalink

wait, you're forgetting "no air," strong contender for single-of-the-year

Tape Store, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:13 (ten years ago) Permalink

I really like "With You" - though I can see why people hate on it.

Tim F, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 12 July 2008 23:01 (ten years ago) Permalink

I voted for Sunday Morning.

ablaeser, Saturday, 12 July 2008 23:24 (ten years ago) Permalink

the rihanna song. i like duets, and it's maybe their best mimicry of that '80s electro-soul thing. should have been produced by phil collins or dave stewart.

The Reverend, Monday, 14 July 2008 04:28 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah surprisingly good showing for "Harder To Breathe"

some dude, Monday, 14 July 2008 04:30 (ten years ago) Permalink

LOL. I guess this band has even fewer fans on here than DMB.

I didn't see it in time to vote, but "This Love" has it because of a great intro.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 July 2008 22:47 (ten years ago) Permalink

Yes, Geir. A song that begins with a few instrumental bars of the same section that plays under all the verses constitutes a "great intro." WTF kind of songwriting snob are you?

niiice, I got kind of excited too when I saw they were releasing a remix album but had no idea what would be on it, and that's pretty close to what I was hoping for.

some dude, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:29 (ten years ago) Permalink

looks like a fitting companion piece to this, which is pretty dope, I think ethan has repped for it on here before too:

08 Wake Up Call [ft. David Banner] (David Banner Remix)

this is one instance where I actually hope all Banner does is throw a "Rubber Band Man"-knockoff beat on there.

some dude, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

i kind of hope all the people on this tracklist that are mainly producers just throw their normal stuff under these songs

im going to even pretend like pharrell's rmx of "she will be loved" is gonna end up like "frontin" and not "number ones" (is that what that song is called?) or something

Jordan, Friday, 31 October 2008 19:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah, like "Little Of Your Time" with a "Toxic" backing would be just fine with me, no need to get creative. (xpost)

new album has a distressing number of industry hands as co-writers

if you can spend months with mutt lange recording in europe and get zero big hits from it, you may require life support

da croupier, Monday, 18 June 2012 13:45 (six years ago) Permalink

industry hands all over the new album seemed like an inevitability after the steep diminishing returns of what-they-usually-do on the 3rd album and the face-saving success of a Benny Blanco/Shellback production

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 13:52 (six years ago) Permalink

based on writing credits one of the bonus tracks on this album appears to be a J.R. Rotem production that samples Amadou & Mariam's joint with Damon Albarn

On March 8, 2012, it was announced that Jesse Carmichael would take a break from the band for an undetermined amount of time to focus more on his studies of music and "spiritual healing".

i bet the non-Levine members of the band did less on this album than the non-Stefani members of No Doubt did on Rock Steady

Where'd you get your material, I mean the sound bytes and musical clippets and all, you've been so forthcoming about it! With people who offer you their e-mail address, no less.

I mean, since you're such an avid music enthusiast and all.

uhhh so the newest (awful) single is apparently #1 on the hot 100 now. when i first heard it i actually thought it would be squarely rejected by the public because it sounded so bad to me but APPARENTLY i was wrong. i should have known better considering that the gym class heroes/adam levine single was such a big hit earlier this year or last year or whenever that was.

teledyldonix, Thursday, 20 September 2012 08:22 (six years ago) Permalink

Ehh, it's fine. After the double whammy of "Moves Like Jagger" and "Payphone" it seems pretty innocuous and hard to get mad at, kind of minor though, all the same. Kind of funny tho to go "oh of course it's a hit" cause of that Gym Class Heroes joint that everybody's already forgotten, instead of, you know, the two huge hits that immediately preceded this one.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Thursday, 20 September 2012 09:23 (six years ago) Permalink

haven't heard it in a while but "payphone" is dope iirc?

flopson, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:02 (six years ago) Permalink

Maroon 5 have entered the 10,000 Maniacs phase of their career in which the lead singer humors a band that barely sounds like it's playing on their own record.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:04 (six years ago) Permalink

did they ever not sound like that, though?

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:15 (six years ago) Permalink

If you ever want to be bored, listen to the "commentary track" version of this album on Spotify, as members of the band (or possibly Levine, with voice-shifting technology) riff without intensity about the songwriting process.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:17 (six years ago) Permalink

I own the second one and they still sound like a band playing distinct parts; they hadn't yet been Pro Tooled to sound like the aural equivalent of one of Levine's tats.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:17 (six years ago) Permalink

ha – "riff without intensity" is what these guys once did

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:18 (six years ago) Permalink

it's definitely gotten more extreme, i'll admit

songwriting credits on the new album suggest an album frontloaded with songs levine did with pros, with two other members allowed to fill in the second half.

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:21 (six years ago) Permalink

you guys ever heard kara's flowers? when levine and co were going for that fountains of wayne/possum dixon vibe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trkt9w_94To

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:22 (six years ago) Permalink

huh, wow. No, never heard, it's almost worth pulling up on Spotify for less washed-out sound. Utterly generic in that "I think I've heard this hook before somewhere" way and not exactly punching its way out of the speaker but not the worst generic 90s-style power-pop you'll ever hear.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 16:28 (six years ago) Permalink

they played state college while promoting that album and bonded with some of the local music dudes, who then spent the latter half of the '00s going "wtf" at maroon 5's success. I love that maroon 5's narrative - failed late '90s alt-rock band breaks up after brief painful major label experience, singer gets more into classic rock/r&b and brings back the posse, sign to big indie and PROFIT - is the same as Spoon's. Only Britt kept the old name.
