Street Life

This is rrreally tough. Cover is necessary though, can't have a blue question mark (or a red cross):

I was gonna say "Street Life" too, but I gotta go with "Amazona," not just for defining the album, but for Manzanera's gloriously cracked solo. Which also defines the album.

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 9 June 2008 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

Amazona.

Raw Patrick, Monday, 9 June 2008 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

Mother of Pearl. I remember being really frustrated that it didn't appear on the "best of" that I used to have.

dlp9001, Monday, 9 June 2008 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

"Mother of Pearl" forever, but sometimes lately "Amazona" pushes it close. But jeez, "Mother of Pearl", people.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 9 June 2008 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

Mother of Pearl. One of my favorite lyrics ever.

Dan Peterson, Monday, 9 June 2008 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

"Serenade" is my absolute favorite Roxy album track: total boilerplate, but, like the Stones' "Summer Romance" or Prince's "Play in the Sunshine," boilerplate that reduces the group's appeal to essentials.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 9 June 2008 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

Mother Of Pearl, the mother of all Roxy Music songs.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 9 June 2008 21:10 (twelve years ago) link

all great tracks but it's "sunset" for me, a perfect ending.

nonightsweats, Monday, 9 June 2008 21:14 (twelve years ago) link

So fucking torn between "Street Life" and "A Song For Europe" here. The former has HEY GOOD LOOKING BOYS but the latter has Ferry self-consciously lapsing into French with no warning at all.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:39 (twelve years ago) link

"Street Life" (in my top 10 of all-time favorite songs), followed closely by "Mother of Pearl."

inhibitionist, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 03:13 (twelve years ago) link

mother of pearl, but poll reminds me i have to download some of these songs, i only ever owned a cassette back in the day

velko, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 04:41 (twelve years ago) link

I wouldn't trade you for another song

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:12 (twelve years ago) link

That's another poll

Tom D., Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

"And the Bridge... it sigh" - it's all about Song For Europe.

Stevie T, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

I'm sacking my typist.

Stevie T, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

it's a tie between "amazona", "psalm" and "mother of pearl". "mother of pearl" wins on lyrics, the vocal on "psalm" is just utterly ridiculous - it's songs like this that make ferry so fascinating to me, there's a real masculinity to the way he sings that's thuggish and real, he sounds both broken and invincible - but then "amazona" has that really cool out of phase bit that sounds like the record is warped. "amazona" it is!

"Just Like You" is so lovely and melancholy.

Bodrick III, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

really, all these songs are top drawer.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

This album is all about Manzanera for me, so I'm going with Amazona.

allen Baekeland, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

I gave it to "Just Like You"

Joe, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

intensely difficult poll. Going with Serenade for right now but I'm happy with every single track

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

PARTY TIME WASTING

cutty, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 01:39 (twelve years ago) link

Mother of Pearl, but the live performance of Psalm on the DVD almost pushed it to 1

iago g., Wednesday, 18 June 2008 02:28 (twelve years ago) link

"A Song For Europe".

"Amazona" had a great riff though (And I believe Ice-T thought so too)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 10:45 (twelve years ago) link

I think this was the second album I ever bought (aged 11). It still has to be "Street Life", though - my favourite Roxy track, and one of my favourite singles ever ever ever.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 10:50 (twelve years ago) link

MOP

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 13:20 (twelve years ago) link
