Sade: Classic or Dud?

I'm greatly frustrated by the lack of a straight-ahead, Sade classic or dud thread on ILM.

I want to invite the folks who would say "dud" to a duel, you see? Let's have it out.

Bimble, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 04:47 (ten years ago) Permalink

That's more sportsmanlike than is befitting of a Sade-hater.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 04:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

I say oil up the guillotine.

I know I am an old man tonight, because I just wiki-ed her and found out she's 49. And of course she is, if I think about it. Still. I hate it when time passes.

I've started quite a few Sade threads around here. Apart from some isolated comments on how Sade fans couldn't possibly "love music", they've been well recieved.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 08:38 (ten years ago) Permalink

dood. 'your love is king' slays a party if mixed into hiphop. she should put out an lp produced by dangermouse or timberlake/land.

There's no straight-up "classic or dud" thread because everyone thinks she's classic.

no offense dude, this sounds like awful idea

The Reverend, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 16:57 (ten years ago) Permalink

Really, really happy I had the chance to see her perform. Her voice is just as stunning live. "Is It a Crime?" = SWOON. I'll check out those live DVDs mentioned.

scampering alpaca, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 16:59 (ten years ago) Permalink

actually it would have been dope to see her do a record produced by Massive Attack in their prime. but you really cant fault her music at all.

pipecock, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 20:26 (ten years ago) Permalink

Good lord, her with Massive Attack. That sounds like a fantastic idea.

Bimble, Tuesday, 11 March 2008 20:39 (ten years ago) Permalink

There's no straight-up "classic or dud" thread because everyone thinks she's classic.

Not everyone, apparently. From AMG's review of Promise:

was once again the personification of cool, laid-back singing, seldom extending or embellishing lyrics, registering emotion, or projecting her voice. This demeanor made her more desirable in the minds of many fans and was perhaps the ultimate misapplication of the notion of sophistication.

From AMG's review of Stronger Than Pride:

After two LPs with little or no energy, Sade demonstrated some intensity and fire on her third release. . . . Not that she was suddenly singing in a soulful or bluesy manner; rather, Sade's dry and introspective tone now had a little more edge, and the lyrics were ironic as well as reflective.

AMG was also lukewarm on Diamond Life. To be fair, all three of these reviews were written by the same reviewer (Ron Wynn). Still, I'm surprised, since I've always thought that AMG seemed pretty generous to artists (maybe that's a complete misperception).

FWIW -- not much, I know -- I like Sade, but I don't think she's as great as most others here apparently do. De gustibus non est disputandum, I guess.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 11 March 2008 20:50 (ten years ago) Permalink

I know I'm gonna sound like some random googler, but, Sade? I love her. I mean, I really, really love her.

(Um, classic obv.)

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 06:56 (ten years ago) Permalink

That is a really rare contrarian POV for AMG.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 11:34 (ten years ago) Permalink

It's on the single. I don't like it mainly because it changes the chord progression, rendering Sade's singing faintly ridiculous for anyone who loves the original..

As much as I love Sade I don't understand how a live album could be worth having. I've been to one of her shows (at Madison Square Garden) and it was mindblowing, but aside from a conga flourish or two, the music itself seemed exactly the same as on record..

She was so good when I saw her a few weeks ago. So totally cool, so totally in control, but she was definitely having fun, too. Super staging as well, totally subtle and tasteful, which is what I'd expect, but still more than I usually expect from an arena. Love the economy/restraint of her band.

As a singer, Sade sounds like no one else. There’s a plangent tone to her voice, a liking for the long-held note, almost vibrato-free. A precision of diction. No melisma, no swooping octave leaps. And there are two very distinct tones – softness with just a slight husk in the bottom range, and above that, a more strident note, bringing a hardness which is vital, adding the only sharp edge.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 16:55 (two months ago) Permalink
