if you're putting any together send em over my way too please! the decade has not been kind to the preservation of my favourite 2-step and grime mp3s, and no one seems to have bothered putting them on itunes or anything ;_;

certainly.

Tim F, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 09:20 (thirteen years ago) link

This is a case of music I really really didn't like at the time, but now I have quite a fondness for.

Speed Garage blew up about the time I started uni, as a shy, dorky schmindie/IDM virgin from the suburbs, yet to understand the appeal of club culture and dance music in general. Essex Uni wasn't much different to Stevenage in its qualitative range of nightspots, and the first person to play me garage music was this TOTAL DICK in our student halls who dobbed on us for smoking weed. Sooner or later Craig David and the Artful Dodger were being played all over the shop, but I found garage a bit too too slow and silky for me, finding trance a bit easier to jump around to on student nights.

I associated the music with the twattiest of student types - the most horrible proley consumer-fetishist, Breezer-drinking, proudly apolitical tossers.

Maybe it was a problem with me, or the surroundings I was in, but I I still find 1999-2000 a really difficult era of music to love - Nu Metal's Tom Green fratboy extreme sportz mindset, Moby's defanged coffeetable electronica, Ibiza's tits'n'booze brashness, "indie" turning into AOR bilge like Travis or the blandly retrospective Hives, Macy Gray... It was generally horrific, so no wonder I spent the most part of those years making my own music and listening to the Warp back catalgoue.

Then I left uni and remember really liking 21 Seconds (maybe the last big 2-step hit?). I've since had time to distance myself and mature and become more open to other things. Gonna go back and listen to all these, and get nostalgic about those first awkward moments on the Colchester dancefloor.

Thanks Tim, these are great!

I was 15/16 when 2-step was getting into the charts. I was in that kinda-indie-by-default demographic at the time but remember just thinking 'fuck this shit' as someone tried to make me listen to Travis or whatever instead of Sweet like chocolate. Heavily nostalgia-fuelled, obv, but this is such a musical golden period for me.

(PS HELLO, I'm new)

oppet, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Jumped straight on to disc 2, enjoying it immensely.

P.S. Hi oppet!

Sweet like Chocolate and Re-Rewind were some of my first musical memories. My sister gave me a few really good mix cassettes. 2-step was a solitary experience for me, my schoolmates were all into Bonkers CDs

Flowers is pretty much the best record ever isn't it?

Darren Huckerby (Dwight Yorke), Saturday, 15 January 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

At the moment I have a real curiosity about those really dewy but still chewy sentimentalist end-of-night 2-step classix - a curiosity as in I'm trying to get to the bottom of how they actually work (on me) - have always loved them obv. Check:

Selena vs X-Men - Give It Up
Zoom & DBX - Comin' Again
Richie Dan & K Warren - Call It Fate (Underground Mix)

Will post youtube links later.

Tim F, Monday, 17 January 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBS_G-wUxtA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn4czQHwfmA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRYUmpE7mXA

I love these three tracks so much, really end-of-night tunes, there's this feel of bittersweet camaraderie to them, like, we're sad that the night's ending but it's been an amazing ride.

Sort of the equivalent of Jam & Lewis and similar sentimentalist R&B tunes from the beginning of the 00s (which I've also been listening to heaps of late) - Janet's "All 4 U", Mya's "Free", Chante Moore's "Straight Up", which I think are similar dancefloor uniters with the same kind of dynamic.

An excellent, perhaps unbeatable documents of uk garage circa 2001. Again, disc two (forthcoming) is prob my favourite but this has some all time classics for me - Bump & Flex's dub of "All I Do", K2 Family's "Bouncing Flow", Dubaholics' "Closer To You" and above all London Dodgers' astonishing "Down Down Biznizz"...

Tim F, Monday, 31 January 2011 13:41 (thirteen years ago) link

what i really really want are unmixed versions of all the 2-step hits - i have many mixes with them already. both 2-step and grime could really use some decent curation.

Here you go Lex, stumbled across a full copy of this pretty rare Bump & Flex Bassbin Killa Dub of Rosie Gaines "I Want You", which I've always loved - demonstrates yet again that Bump & Flex is the great unheralded beat master that Zed Bias/El-B et. al. fans ignore at their peril.

My very first 2-step compilation, picked it up in about mid-1999 and fair to say it changed my life. Actually from 1997 and right on the cusp of speed garage into 2-step and pretty fucking seminal IMO - from the delicious bumpiness of tracks 1, 2, 6 and 10 to the booming massiveness of 13 to the overloaded ridiculousness of 14 to the can't fuck with anthemism of 15 to the yet-another-best-track-in-history gorgeousness of 16 (that 4 track run is basically the finest run of music ever perhaps).
