I can't think of any others apart from these two. Only people who were born and/or grew up in Surrey - obviously there are loads of musicians who moved to Surrey after they became famous! Anyone else have any ideas?

These poll options are like choosing between being kicked in the knackers and having London Irish dance on your knackers. In hobnail boots.

subject of "is x london" is a perennial old ilx fuckmare.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Were they from Surrey? THEY WIN THEN!

I don't know about the rest of St Etienne but when I first met Sarah Cracknell ('84-ish, pre St. Etienne when she was in a duo called Prime Time) she was living in Windsor (= Berkshire) and (judging from a couple of conversations we had and some of the other people we both knew, e.g. Poly Hancock, later of The Popinjays) had evidently been to school / college there. She later ('86-ish?) moved to London and according to AMG she was born in Chelmsford, Essex.

Sham 69 were from Hersham (although they inexplicably seemed to think that this somehow made them Cockneys).

The Stranglers started off in Guildford, although I don't think any of them (except possibly Jet Black?) actually came from there.

Captain Sensible is from Croydon and Rat Scabies is from Kingston-Upon Thames.

The Psychedelic Furs started off in Kingston iirc.

The Vapors were from Woking.

I'm pretty sure Kirsty MacColl is from Croydon too.

Uh, Peter Gabriel. You might have heard of him.

Tom D., Thursday, 31 January 2008 11:14 (ten years ago) Permalink

Peter Gabriel is from Chobham and Genesis formed at Charterhouse.

The Jam>Saint Etienne anyway. Would have picked them ahead of Eric Clapton though.

I'm sure someone else has cited as such, but WHAT ABOUT THE STRANGLERS? WHAT ABOUT SHAM 69?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:28 (ten years ago) Permalink

Is Crawley part of Surrey? (I'd ask the wife, but she's not up yet)

Alex in NYC, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:28 (ten years ago) Permalink

West Sussex I think

Colonel Poo, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:30 (ten years ago) Permalink

Crawley is West Sussex, the adjacent county. It's right on the border though.

NickB, Friday, 1 February 2008 13:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

Didn't it used to be in Surrey at one point?

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

I'm waiting for Dorset, Middlesex and Rutland, in no particular order.

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:32 (ten years ago) Permalink

Crawley's always been in West Sussex. The Feeling are from Horsham, which is also the location of the boarding school in the first series of Gene Simmon's Rock School.

snoball, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:46 (ten years ago) Permalink

I'm guessing Alex was thinking about the Cure. West Sussex would also be Brett Anderson, Leo Sayer and um, the Ordinary Boys.

NickB, Friday, 1 February 2008 14:58 (ten years ago) Permalink

Psst, don't let this thread be revived when Louis comes back or you'll all be in a world of trouble for not mentioning Kingston-upon-Thamesers Cardiacs.

Would start hilarious Dorset poll with options "King Crimson" and "my teenage cousins' Nickelback and RHCP covers band" but cannot be arsed, like.

Don't ferget the Peej.

NickB, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:02 (ten years ago) Permalink

Oh! I did, too. See, this is why I couldn't start the poll, I knew I'd forgotten someone obvious that I really liked and would be annoyed at myself when they were pointed out.

a passing spacecadet, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:12 (ten years ago) Permalink

And what about the Lucky Bishops?

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

Not to mention Bitter Little Cider Apples, Cheese, Freak Circus, Garfield's Birthday, Gothic Chicken, The Steve Wilson Band....

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:20 (ten years ago) Permalink

Oh yes, it's aaaall 'appenin' doon 'ere in Daaaarsed!

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 1 February 2008 15:20 (ten years ago) Permalink

You could have included Status Quo and Busted! Rick Parfitt and Matt Willis are both from Woking. Also, my googling hasn't been able to confirm this but I think Sheep On Drugs might also be from around that neck of the woods. I certainly remember a bazillion posters in the underpass under Woking Station when I was a yoof.

Madchen, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

ah yes Sheep on Drugs who had to suffer the indignity of having their name shortened to Sheep on the Chart Show.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

Merton Parkas, come on, clue's in the name and that.

Madchen, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:26 (ten years ago) Permalink

Not that they'd have won I guess.

Madchen, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:27 (ten years ago) Permalink

I thought they were from Merton Park, name being the clue and all that.

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:35 (ten years ago) Permalink

I suppose that's in Surrey rather than London, I guess.

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

Yep, the London Borough of Merton used to be part of Surrey.

Madchen, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:51 (ten years ago) Permalink

Yes, I was thinking of The Cure.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 1 February 2008 16:56 (ten years ago) Permalink

ten years pass...

More of an ILE question than an ILM one (but its not worth starting a new thread):

Is there anything of interest near-ish Camberley?
