Is the guy on the far right of the 60s Nirvana pic one their dads come to pick them up from a party? "Come on guys, let's go, you've said enough goodbyes."

It looks like the late William Rehnquist.

Nevermind easy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:55 (ten years ago) Permalink

I liked "In Utero" before he died, so ner.

Also, I knew the bassist in the first Nirvana.

Mark G, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:00 (ten years ago) Permalink

If The Beatles had broken up in 1966, Paul McCartney's debut solo album probably would have sounded a bit like "The Story Of Simon Simopath".

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:10 (ten years ago) Permalink

I think it would've sounded exactly like the songs he wrote for the White Album.

Actually, that's the first picture I've seen of the band. I think Chris is far right. He also sang lead on "The Lord" by the bee gees. OK, end.

I think it would've sounded exactly like the songs he wrote for the White Album.

You mean the songs he wrote for "Sgt. Pepper" sounded exactly like the ones he wrote for the White Album?

McCartney did release a solo album with material sounding largely like his White Album output. It's called "McCartney" and it was released in 1970.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:01 (ten years ago) Permalink

Where is MTV Unplugged? Or by the rivers of blahblahblahblah?

Albums consisting only of new versions of pre-existing material don't belong here.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:00 (ten years ago) Permalink

The pic is from 1989. Nirvana, at the time, consisted of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Jason Everman and Chad Channing. Maybe not a very "representative" pic, but I didn't pay enough attention when picking it.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 14 January 2008 10:12 (ten years ago) Permalink

pisces, Monday, 14 January 2008 12:50 (ten years ago) Permalink

The right answer would have been "All Of Us" or "The Story Of Simon Simopath". The right American answer remains "Nevermind". So wrong on all accounts.

if by "American" you mean "everyone in the world except Geir and the families of that earlier Nirvana" than yeah

Tell you what I've only played one and a half times:

That Nirvana box with the nice metal shiny front. Lovely package, nice DVD, but hey.

Btw, I find that box sets like this one, that I'd otherwise never listen to completely start-to-finish more than once every 10 years, are tailor-made for "shuffle" mode -- I quite enjoy the occasional track!

more than ever convinced ilxor is a sock (ilxor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:02 (eight years ago) Permalink

Geir has made it pretty clear in the past that live music doesn't matter to him at all, only perfected studio recordings.

his criticism doesn't even make sense about Unplugged in that while they were oft re-recorded old Nirvana tunes there was a GAZILLION covers of material that they hadn't covered on wax prior to that night. I mean ffs!

who gives a shit? Geir excluded Incesticide and the two live albums and included the two 60s Nirvana albums: he has a bit of the idiot in him.

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:13 (eight years ago) Permalink

i'm aware of geir's general feelings about live recordings. i asked the question because he broadens the exclusion here (and elsewhere) to "new versions of pre-existing material." which raises the question: does performance matter at all? does a great vocal performance matter? does great playing matter? or is the first recording, preferably by the composer, automatically better than all other recordings. period? i'm not looking for a titanic-channeling, ilx-sinking, world-ending thread. just a simple answer. really!

I had the 7" version, back in the day. A very silly Melvins' cover of "Venus in Furs" on the other side.

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:22 (eight years ago) Permalink

I had a chance to buy some sort of weird Nirvana vinyl (7 or 10" ???) once, with the VU cover and the song Opinion and some other song on it, I can't remember which. Didn't have quite enough to do it, and am now haunted by it.

Never found it in any Nirvana discography; does anybody have any idea what the other song was? Was it super-rare or anything? Wd appreciate the feedback!!!1!!

bleach = in utero > incesticide > nevermind > unplugged for me

i admit my placement of nevermind might have something to do with being absolutely inundated by it for the entirety of hs. anyway, don't sleep on incesticide imo

hypnosis is the reason some Jewish people backed him → (will), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:25 (eight years ago) Permalink

My order:

incesticide > with the lights out > in utero > bleach > nevermind > unplugged

I think Nirvana's non-album tracks are pretty remarkable, unexpectedly ass-kicking and often very strange.

it's so stupid that there's like official Nirvana b-sides that still have never seen a proper CD release. This band's catalog is totally fucking bungled

Is "Talk to Me" a cover? It sounds very familiar (in the same way that all nirvana songs sound familiar, even upon hearing it the first time) but otherwise doesn't sound at all like a nirvana song.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:49 (eight years ago) Permalink

xp I tend to despise most Courtney Love trash-talk, but I think that this (handling Kurt's recorded output) is the one area where a legitimate claim could be made that she is a scourge on this earth.

I'd condense that to, "I tend to despise Courtney Love; she is a scourge on this earth."
