It's gotta be "Steven" of course, even though it's even better together with the tracks before and after it.

Other strong tracks here too though. "The Black Widow" is wonderfully creepy, while "Only Women Bleed" may be his best ever ballad.

now we're talkin'!...I'm going with soft-shoe "Some Folks"...a strange tune for a strange album, but it works..."Department Of Youth" almost gets my vote, for the "and who gave it to you?...Donny Osmond!...what!!" fade-out...always wondered why he referred to "Black Widow" as a "he", though...("the unholiest of kings"?)...and what a riff on "Cold Ethyl"!...one of my favorite LP covers, too...oh wherefore art tho, Pacific Eye & Ear?...(as a kid, I was transfixed by the TV Special that accompanied this record, which is not the same as the recent DVD reissue)...

Devil's Food, for the Vincent price bit alone (even though it's a prequel to the following track)

I love this entire record and am having trouble splitting it up into songs and voting. One of the few things left that I can't listen to except as a whole, even on itunes.

Alright, thats like the third reference I've seen/heard in relation to how great the cover art is. I'm guessing there must be something that doesn't come across in scanned images (I've never seen a physical copy).

Fuck it, I'm voting for the title track.

John Justen, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 22:54 (sixteen years ago) link

"The Black Widow", for the Vincent Price spoken intro. Also the title cut, and "Cold Ethyl" for the bit where Alice says "Ethyl's dead!".
The cover makes him look like Lawrence Lewellyn-Bowen though.

this is quite coincidental, because this record is on my 'to buy' list.
i know the singles, but am looking forward to hearing how the whole thing falls together as an album.

"Only Women Bleed," bitches!

the alternate version of "The Awakening" (available as a bonus track on certain CD pressings) has another neat Vincent Price voice-over...

"Years Ago" is subtly chilling...could easily fit into a David Lynch film...has a similar "demented carnival" feeling as "Throw Your Set In The Air"...

I'm going with "Only Women Bleed".

This is the first record I ever bought.

It's gotta be Steven.
