any suggestions?

okay, not NO money. but i definitely want something cheap.

are most cheap things comparable?

should i just go on ebay and buy the first 75 dollar cd player i see?

i usually play CDs thru my computer, but my computer has been acting up. um, and shutting down when i play audio/video sometimes.

which makes me nervous.

which is why i want a cd player.

i've never actually bought a cd player before.

not a real one.

i had a discman hooked up to my stereo for years.

thanks, you've all been great. now stare into vincent's eye:

LOL Ebay:

The player is in perfect cosmetic condition and looks like new. I am the only owner and user of the player. The player is part of a rack I purchased at the Fisher dealer. The unit has little use, I have played no more than probably 30 CDs in total, and the unit has never been abused, or exposed to dust or any harm. The display of the player is crisp and clear, the front is shiny and has the same look and feel it had when new. There are no scratches or finger prints on the touch controls.

Since I have several CD players I decided to sell this unit. When I tested the unit it did not play CDs. I have not tried to fix it, but the problem must be minor: when a CD is loaded in the front tray and the play button is pressed, the unit does not spin the CD, and does not try to read the CD.

You can probably get a DVD player (which will also play CDs) cheaper than a CD player these days. I think the bottom's kind of fallen out of the budget standalone CD player market.

I would recommend sylvania for the budget conscious?

El Tomboto, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Craigslist? You can probably get something for $20 or less!

In my limited experience DVD players that play CDs can be poor CD players. I bought a Sony DVP-755 (I think that's the number) for its SACD capability; SACD sounded great but CDs were muffled compared to my '93 Sony player.

When the latter died a few months ago, I bought a 5-disc Sony carousel unit (SCD-CE595) that also does SACD (but not DVD or MP3 discs). It sounds good for either format (to me anyway), though it's slow to read discs and oddly enough can't play dualdiscs — which my '93 player could(!). I ended up re-purchasing most of the Talking Heads reissues in their European CD/DVD versions when it probably would've been cheaper (but more time-consuming research-wise) to just buy another CD player.

It does have CD-text — something that would've seemed like a major novelty a decade ago but which in the MP3 age is a bit of a charming anachronism. I always get excited when I discover a disc has the text feature, though.

maria bought me a teac cd player at radio shack and even though it's cheap it sounds WAY better than any player i've ever owned. including the one in my computer. maybe that's not that astonishing. anyway, it's making me want to play CDs and NOTHING ever makes me want to play CDs. i wanna hear all my kompakt CDs now.

get a dvd or Blu-ray player with optical out and run it to your stereo through a nice DAC?

mark e. smith-moon (f. hazel), Friday, 16 April 2021 02:49 (three years ago) link

f. hazel otm, though you could also just connect it with an RCA cable, same as you would have with a CD player in the old days

Brad C., Friday, 16 April 2021 03:08 (three years ago) link

Or just drop by a Goodwill, where you probably won't pay more than $15 for a component cd player if there's one to be had (and there are usually several, some with wear but some that look basically new).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 16 April 2021 03:20 (three years ago) link

I just got a Denon cd player at this local electronics recycling place for $100 that was $1000 in 2009

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 16 April 2021 03:21 (three years ago) link

Right? Considering the rate at which these things are being thrown away, there's no reason to pay full retail for a new one.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 16 April 2021 03:24 (three years ago) link

yeah I know I can get a blu ray player, I was asking about CD players with buttons and display for audio CDs

Yes I will just buy some random thing off goodwill

Thanks

brimstead, Friday, 16 April 2021 03:59 (three years ago) link

I don’t go outside, i don’t read about the rates at which things are thrown away

brimstead, Friday, 16 April 2021 04:00 (three years ago) link

I recently bought a 1986 model Technics CD player off eBay for $50 + shipping (more like $100 altogether). It looks cool, has an appealing color display, plays great... and it's retro chic!

Josefa, Friday, 16 April 2021 04:16 (three years ago) link

Ha! I'm looking at one of those now.. hmmm

brimstead, Friday, 16 April 2021 04:32 (three years ago) link

i've been using a sony DVD player for the last 10+ years, it's starting to make noises though. had an onkyo changer for years and years before that.

some of this shit... YESSSS: https://ebay.us/vPxkoy

brimstead, Friday, 16 April 2021 04:50 (three years ago) link

Mine's a Technics SL-PJ11. I see there are three up on eBay right now priced between $90-100.

Josefa, Friday, 16 April 2021 05:30 (three years ago) link

aw, my first CD player was a Technics SL-P111, I still have it but the laser is shot
