'Heaven and Hell' .. lock thread

905! 905! Best Who synth song of all. It's like all of a Townshend rock opera distilled into a single track. If only Townshend did the same more often. Runner up is the Quiet One.

Heaven and Hell, this is really a poll that didn't need to happen

iago g., Friday, 2 November 2007 02:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I love "My Wife," but I gotta go with "Boris the Spider." All about that bass line.

supposedly "905" was either a) part of a science-fiction rock opera entwistle was working on at the time, or b) a song he'd written for the then-briefly-revived lifehouse. it's definitely underrated, and it has probably my favorite entwistle vocal moment ("i have this feeling in my head that something is missing...")

Lawrence the Looter, Friday, 2 November 2007 02:33 (sixteen years ago) link

crap...i mean, "i have a feeling deep inside that something is missing."

Lawrence the Looter, Friday, 2 November 2007 02:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i go with My Wife - i've never heard 905 or Heaven and Hell or I can't remember them if i did.

i also like Someone's Coming

"We're having a lovely tiiiiiiimme!"

Mark G, Friday, 2 November 2007 09:40 (sixteen years ago) link

"Boris". Jimi Hendrix said it was his favourite Who song. Good enough for me. I like "Whisky Man" too... and "Silas Stingy"... have never heard "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" or anything after "My Wife"

Tom D., Friday, 2 November 2007 12:02 (sixteen years ago) link

"Success Story", because it's a great song, and also because of the bit in "The Kids Are Alright" where Entwhistle is shooting at gold discs like they were clay pidgeons.

snoball, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:14 (sixteen years ago) link

"Success Story" for me.

Joe, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought "Heaven and Hell" was Hendricies favorite.

bendy, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Wasn't he dead by the time it came out?

Tom D., Friday, 2 November 2007 12:28 (sixteen years ago) link

"Live at Leeds" was released May 1970, Hendrix died September 1970. Also the 'Oo played the song live from 1968.

snoball, Friday, 2 November 2007 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

"Whiskey Man" and "Boris the Spider" have always been my favorites. Voted for the former.

JN$OT, Friday, 2 November 2007 13:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Heaven and Hell is one of the Who's top 5. I also love My Wife.

I don't think Heaven and Hell was on the original Leeds release, I could be wrong.

O'yeh, I was gonna use pretty much the same words Al.NYC did, only pretty much the other way round. Love that "Spider" bass line, but it's atill all about "My Wife" f'me.

Seriously, what a fucking number to start a show with.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 2 November 2007 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

This is definitely a minority choice but I went with "Postcard". My main point is, waaaay too many good choices. "Doctor, Doctor" would have been my second choice. That song is so nervous and frightening on a certain level, but also really funny and absurd on another. "Postcard" is really sublime to me though, and edge "Doctor, Doctor" out. I know I know. "'Postcard'? What the fuck are you thinking?"

As time goes by, Entwistle becomes more of a great figure in the Who to me than other members. His bass playing -- pose, skills, approach, everything -- was unmatchable.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not the Who without Entwistle. On the recent rerelease of the Kids Are Alright DVD, there is a special feature where you can watch the "Ox-Cam" performances of Baba O Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again. It's just a camera on him, and the sound is just his bass. It's utterly mind-blowing how awesome the guy was.

Bill Magill, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I agree. That said, I wouldn't want to watch an "Ox-Cam" of "Magic Bus".

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

It's utterly mind-blowing how awesome the guy was.

I just wish he'd stuck around long enough to make a duo record with Peter Brotzmann (a la Brotzm/Bill Laswell's Low-Life).

Sara Sara Sara, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd like an Ox-cam of the Real Me

Bill Magill, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think Heaven and Hell was on the original Leeds release, I could be wrong.

I've just checked, and it wasn't. They used it as a show opener a lot during that period though. It was the first number they played at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. Did Hendrix play on the same day? Even if he didn't it's likely that he still heard the song somewhere.

snoball, Friday, 2 November 2007 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

"heaven & hell" was first played live starting from the summer of 1968, usually in the middle of the set. they opened all of their 1969-1970 shows with it. the studio recording of the song was first released as the b-side to the live "summertime blues" from leeds in the spring of 1970. so hendrix most likely heard the song a few times.

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde because it is my favorite new Who find.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 2 November 2007 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Heaven and Hell is the clear choice here.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 2 November 2007 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

"Silas Stingy" is wonderfully twee, so I voted for that one. Not a big fan of his songs in general though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 2 November 2007 19:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I voted "Heaven And Hell" also.

I do have to shout out for that Tipton, Entwistle, & Powell record though. It's worth the 99 cent used bin price just to hear Entwistle cutting loose.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

"My Wife" FTW.

I mean, I know it's just "The Letter", but what the hell's wrong with that, anyway?

"Boris The Spider" is tops, too.

"Someone's Coming" 's also a very good one. Had I not already voted for "My Wife", the ... etc, etc.

He really had a knack for the novelty-song-with-a-heart, didn't he? I've gotta go with "Whiskey Man" (tho I love every song already mentioned.)

iago g., Thursday, 8 November 2007 02:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Heaven and Hell was robbed. This is an outrage.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 8 November 2007 02:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Marsh wrote something to the effect that "Heaven and Hell" is the rocker's ultimate wish. Great song, but I think I voted for "Whiskey Man" in the end. I put it on a mix tape once that wound up in Billy Bragg's hands.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 8 November 2007 06:57 (sixteen years ago) link

That mix tape would've been a lot better if it had started with "Heaven and Hell". (Though Billy Bragg wouldn't have ever noticed that.)

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 8 November 2007 13:19 (sixteen years ago) link

no love for Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde :(
