I'm kinda stuck between "Mystic Child" and "Rock Minuet"

da croupier, Saturday, 13 October 2007 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

"Paranoia Key of E" seems like the most ridiculous--or at least the most pretentious--title to me (and that's really saying something here!). However, "Turning Time Around" is probably the worst song (from what I can remember). (Note: I haven't played this CD in ages, but I remember really liking most of it at the time.)

I don't think anything can compete with "Like a Possum."

The Reverend, Saturday, 13 October 2007 10:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't played this album in years, but I loved it! I can look at those titles and hum a line -- except "Future Farmers in America."

Haven't heard it. "Rock Minuet" sounds really bad.

"Like a Possum" is awesome!

best thread title evah

I voted for "Mystic Child", because it sounds like a Moondance-era Van Morrison song done by latter day Lou Reed and that is really unappealing.

Euler, Monday, 15 October 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

"Mystic Child" was a close second but I had to go with "Rock Minuet"

Modern Dance

I've heard this song, it's dreadful.

Both excellent albums, but I give the edge to STTR because it's got more throwaways, and Lou is almost always best with throwaways (e.g. songs about egg creams, playing hookywooky with Laurie Anderson, mean smutty song about Rush and Bob Dole).

Ecstasy is wonderful but too damn long.

i think i would've voted for modern dance? i kinda like that one. really strange, unpleasant lyrics on this whole album.

The mid-album triptych of "Rock Minuet">"Baton Rouge">"Like A Possum" are as perfect a run of songs as anything Lou wrote

feels like the beginnings of lulu

Def the early stages of Lulu on this record, that suite feels to me like part of through line that starts with Berlin to Street Hassle to Ecstasy to Lulu

I got this record when it came out and thought it was good, fine and then sort of lost track of it. Revisited it a couple yrs ago and loved it and now when I listen to it I think it might one of his very best solo records.

It's totally too long, though none of the songs are bad, but I think if you split this record in two you'd have two good records.

Just finished the DeCurtis biography (which is good) and Willner talks about how much work Lou put into woodshedding these songs & recording and making the record and then it comes out and...nothing. Not good or bad reaction, just "oh another Lou album", which is basically was my reaction to it. But it was sort of the thing that broke Lou's back creatively and he essentially retired after it and didn't want to make "Lou Reed" records anymore is kind of heartbreaking.

Ecstasy fiends! You can check out the only live version of "Like A Possum" here: https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/635772213254111232/lou-reed-arena-spettacoli-genoa-italy

You might want to check out all the recent shows I've been listening to ... I'm feeling good about 21st century Lou these days.

Tyler, while you're Summer of Lou-ing, maybe you can find a bootleg video of the Robert Wilson play "Time Rocker" that was scored with songs from Ecstasy.

The "Future Farmers of America" scene was one of the best bits in the show.

I took a friend who'd never seen a Wilson play before; it was so great to watch it blow his mind.

I love this album, one of the late Hal Willner's best production jobs.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 November 2020 11:05 (three years ago) link

Lou's sober work can be divided into the Sylvia era and the Laurie era. I think I prefer the latter because he took more chances and was more willing to risk absurdity (or dive headlong into it).
