has to be Out Of Space - for the Techno Underworld mix as well as the original plus Uplifiting Vibes mix of Ruff In The Jungle Bizness

blueski, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think Liam ever again worked with a drum loop as fantastic as the snare/tom work on "Everybody In The Place" (Fairground Remix). ("Out Of Space" is very very very close, though.)

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Have to go for "Fire/Jericho", though "Break and Enter" is better than any of their singles.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I think "One Love" is EASILY their most underrated single. (At least that's my impression.)

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Breathe. Not sure why.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:55 (seventeen years ago) link

It's a great tune, but wasn't it released like a year before Music for the Jilted Generation? Maybe that's why it's forgotten, the bigger singles from that LP eclipsed it.

(x-post)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Also they originally released it as a white label, so I suspect that people sometimes forget it was a Prodigy tune.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the single versions for both "Firestarter" and "Breathe" are better than the album ones, because the album versions are just needlessly extended edits with nothing new to them, whereas the single versions are just the right length.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Bakc when One Love was out, my cousin was once sitting in his car on a parking lot and playing it on the stereo, and then some weird guy bounced there and knocked his window. He opened the window, and the guy was like "Hey! Hey! I love this tune!", after which he promptly began to sang that weird wordless Indian chant chorus.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"some weird guy"

mh, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, you should've seen me when I was 14.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I think One Love is the weakest track on that EP - prefer the trancier Jonny L mix slightly. Rhythm Of Life should've been on MFTJG really.

blueski, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe 'no good', maybe 'charly'.

'out of space' is the most epochal.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I know this is my poll but I kind of want to choose all of them except for "Wind It Up (Rewound)" and "Spitfire".

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i'll be surprised if anything from this decade gets a vote - even Girls.

blueski, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:42 (seventeen years ago) link

id vote for 'you'll be under my wheels' if i could.

, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:44 (seventeen years ago) link

"Breathe," and I know why: "The Trick."

Eric H., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 14:55 (seventeen years ago) link

This poll is going to surprise me, isn't it.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I heard "Smack My Bitch Up" at SohoLounge the other night, but "Breathe" sounded absolutely amazing the last time I heard it, so it's dat one.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i am surprised by the 'breathe' love, by the 'fat of the land' love.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

No love for "Poison"? I think that's my choice, although it's really difficult!

Neil S, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I am amazed that so many people love "Breathe" more than the other singles! (I am not surprised that so many people love "Breathe", it's a fucking awesome song.)

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Predic: 0 votes for Firestarter.

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I bet the Genaside II remix would have gotten votes.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:02 (seventeen years ago) link

"Voodoo People"

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

or 'charly'.

fuck, this is difficult actually

tissp, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

"Voodoo People," though maybe I should've voted "Firestarter" if I was being completely honest with myself

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

"Out of Space" - it's the most singley. I adore the track to "Smack My Bitch Up." Too bad they couldn't be saying "Snack My Chips Up" immediately before re-entry.

Kevin John Bozelka, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

That Pendulum remix is vv good, but that would feel like a vote for Pendulum instead of the Prodigy.

StanM, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm the obvious muhfuc who voted for "Firestarter". There, I said it and I'm not clicking back on this thread, so there's no use in berating me for it.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

this band is a novelty act

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

"Out of Space" is the one for me alright. Still, I really wish I could vcte for "Poison," "Voodoo People," and "Breathe" as well.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll take the rave killer, I think.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha I meant "Charly".

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 17:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Oooh too hard. I've got a few days to decide between:
- Out of Space
- No Good (Start the Dance)
- Voodoo People

Tim F, Thursday, 13 September 2007 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

For some reason "No Good (Start the Dance)" strikes me as being one of the best titles for a song ever.

Tim F, Thursday, 13 September 2007 03:20 (seventeen years ago) link

it's a toss b/w "no good" and SMBU for me.

tricky, Thursday, 13 September 2007 03:26 (seventeen years ago) link

HI DERE, Thursday, 13 September 2007 04:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I got to admit I've not heard anything after 1996, but up until then it's def. amazing. Still hard to top the stuff that eventually became Experience (in one form or another) though.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 13 September 2007 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

That remix of "Wind It Up" is kind of awful, though.

HI DERE, Thursday, 13 September 2007 05:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I voted "Firestarter" and I don't care who knows it!

Davey D, Thursday, 13 September 2007 06:42 (seventeen years ago) link

"Firestarter" is great, what is the problem?

Tim F, Thursday, 13 September 2007 07:55 (seventeen years ago) link

In fact surely "Breathe" is the cornier choice, if that is what we're referring to - although I like both about equally.

Tim F, Thursday, 13 September 2007 07:55 (seventeen years ago) link

'No Good (Start the Dance)' by a huuuuge margin. Whenever I put that song on, I end up listening to it on repeat at least 10 times.

sous les paves, Thursday, 13 September 2007 08:17 (seventeen years ago) link

The person who says "I voted for 'Hotride' and I don't care who knows it!" is taking a much braver stance IMO (ps I do like the song, it's just... well, THAT'S your favorite single by them, compared to everything else??? wau).

HI DERE, Thursday, 13 September 2007 11:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Alex In SF has never heard Firestarter or anything after??

blueski, Thursday, 13 September 2007 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I want to change my vote to 'No Good (Start the Dance)' or 'Out of Space'

Tough poll.

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 14:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm also liking 'Poison' more than I remember liking it at the time.

onimo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't heard anything after 1996 either.

I think I might vote for Voodoo People.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 13 September 2007 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

"Poison" is THE SHIT.

(I still voted for "One Love", tho)

HI DERE, Thursday, 13 September 2007 14:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Other utterly corny opinion time: I wish I hadn't heard anything after (or including) 1996. (Girls is fun enough I guess.)

I wd vote for all these Jilted singles, and probably all the Experience ones. Choices! Probably it ought to be Out Of Space but that feels like too obvious a choice somehow.

a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

"Alex In SF has never heard Firestarter or anything after??"

Anything AFTER 1996!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought that "Spitfire" and "Hotride" were really odd singles choices.

HI DERE, Thursday, 13 September 2007 15:59 (seventeen years ago) link

...though "Break and Enter" is better than any of their singles

Tuomas OTM. I'm going for Everybody In The Place (the fairground version that was the big hit, definitely NOT the album version).

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Thursday, 13 September 2007 16:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Was it really from 91? I know Charly was, but I remember EITP as being early 92.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Thursday, 13 September 2007 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

EITP was released in December '91 in the UK but there was the original version (different to the one everyone knows) earlier that year also.

I thought that "Spitfire" and "Hotride" were really odd singles choices.

'The Way It Is' and 'You Will Be Under My Wheels' are the best tracks on the album but dunno if they would've worked better as singles. glad the Liam G one wasn't put out at least.

blueski, Thursday, 13 September 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I wish someone would release a dance album as seemingly underground and nasty as Music For A Jilted Generation. Somehow when I was about 14 and it came out, it sounded so volatile, scarey even but in a good way.

the next grozart, Sunday, 6 January 2008 18:38 (sixteen years ago) link

jon, the video is based on the government warning cartoon of the track's namesake which was always shown on Sunday morning children's TV from the 70s up until about the time the track started getting famous.

very weird, especially since "your love" still starts with a "wind it up" vocal sample. spotify's "experience" is also missing "hyperspeed" and "charly"
