talking of hilson, this is still my favourite cut by her, and i'm still sure it was meant for scherzinger
kinda doubt it, considering it was originally released as part of the "In the Mix" OST way back in '05!

was gonna put this in the vacuous pop thread, but in the interests of saving teh zinger from undead cassiedom --
rather than once again scrutinizing the secretly interesting thing inside the trojan horse of tim's pussycat dolls analogy, i was thinking wouldn't it be more illuminating to assess the contours and grain of the horse itself? (cos yknow, generally speaking troy fell in like 2001 amirite.) because without the dolls scherzinger is nothing, yet with them one wagers even her rankest flop mightve gained chart purchase, however counterintuitively ('i hate this part' being just as first person intimate as 'supervillain', for instance).
putting aside the eye candy canard for a sec, i'd venture that the dolls manage to diffuse the scherzinger signal without diluting it, creating like an acephalous zone of pop crowdscene that opens up an avenue into the songs that avoids the intimidating one-to-one r&b artist eye contact poetix the lone scherzinger implies. but then in a sense the horse isn't trojan at all, because everyone knows by now that the dolls do nothing whatsoever; an in-joke turned outward. if the boundaries of that zone, then, are already explicitly agreed upon by all parties, the dolls become something more like a visual autotune for scherzinger - an accepted gimmick vehicle for extremes of emotion, that the listener also employs for it to be enjoyable.
in breaking that contract, and provoking a backlash against her supposed hubris, scherzinger solo was bound to fail really. what i *think* mightve worked is if she'd first done a big cover ballad that didn't necessarily depend on establishing a brand new her, but would still be just too silly if it was a pcd group session. 'save the best for last', i'm telling you!! but oh well.

has anyone else come around to loving the Diddy single she did? i mean i liked it at first but i gradually got really into it.

I still don't get why she attempted a solo career, given that PCD is essentially her solo vehicle and was already massive
yeah basically if this still fantastic song had been a PCDs single it could've been a #1 np

nicole's a slightly colder (or um hotter) fish than yr average
^^this point from way upthread might also be key to the scherzinger's solo failure - in a group this isn't so much subsumed or diluted as transformed into high camp, but solo r&b females don't really seem to have the option to work the superbitch persona. like how girl groups can get away w/misandrist and even misanthropic female anthems, but once you go solo it's all crazy-in-love sexuality or broken-hearted balladry.
― lex pretend, Thursday, 19 February 2009 18:09 (fifteen years ago) link
but yeah the whole PCDs/nicole package is pretty unique. are the PCDs doing badly w/the new album btw, or is that just idolator's wishful thinking?

the 2nd PCD album is kinda skidding along, not a flop but definitely not as big as the 1st, hasn't gone gold yet. that's only 2 singles in, though, who knows how the next one will do.

ya, total classic - i always forget this was her actual first solo appearance and the whole reason anyone ever got excited. IT'S BAD BOY, BITCH + that cold gleaming beat >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> trashy "whatever u like".
all of which reminds me!
― r|t|c, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:36 (fifteen years ago) link
I could totally see a Nicole version of "Saved The Best For Last". I think I agree with both r|t|c and lex on this one: the Pussycat Dolls foil makes Nicole's extremism seem less extreme, more like costumery. Moreover (and this is probably just making r|t|c's point more obviously) b/c one can't really identify with "the Dolls" as such, it's very effective at promoting the good-song-ness of the songs - while at the same time they're memorable enough and actually-well-known enough that their blankness doesn't have the deflationary drag of anonymizing their songs.
Also I think visually the most important thing about PCD (who are not eye candy really - Nicole's the best looking of the lot) is their capacity to sort of stride/saunter in a line through all of their video clips, a bit like that weird fembot in the Maxi Priest "That Girl" video. It's exactly the right "look" for all the uptempo PCD songs.
― Tim F, Friday, 20 February 2009 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link
I would have thought that the first PCD album, rather like P!nk's I'm Not Dead and the Fergie album, would have gotten a lot of its sales from people going "okay I like at least three of the singles on this."

I thought the song was a bit nothing-y but the sound on X-Factor could be to blame, it's designed to kill excitement. This is no "Super Villain" tho right?

yeah that was funny just because there was no official studio remix with Wayne and he clearly just wrote lyrics for the occasion of the performance and worked in references to MTV and filling in for T.I.

every Scherzinger project spends 4-5 years in the vault before hitting the public so it's possible the tracks are that old already

― lex pretend, Friday, 23 May 2014 15:16 (nine years ago) link
i didn't even realize until looking at wiki just now that Scherzinger had several sizeable solo hits in the UK. that didn't happen at all in the US, never got any real visibility outside of the Pussycat Dolls.
― ςὖτ ιτ Οὖτ (some dude), Friday, 23 May 2014 15:40 (nine years ago) link
she replaced cheryl cole as an x factor judge and came across pretty well i think
the uk has really become this dumping ground for american flops to rebuild their career because britishers have no clue. then we give them back to you! hence iggy azalea happening.
