Seriously, how many people here can actually have this thing! Also, can I borrow it so I can copy it? :-)

I know, right?, Sunday, 3 June 2007 21:40 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Yeah. Want.

Drooone, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:26 (twelve years ago) Permalink

I've only heard "Exotic Apple" and "Yantra Material Action". Neither one is bad.

Possibly of interest, this site has a disc-by-disc review of the whole Merzbox.

novaheat, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:52 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Stylus did a run-through also.

One possible ending:

Eh, it was OK.

Better (?) possible ending:

The only person stupider than a person who listens to and writes about Merzbow's Merzbox is the one who reads about it.

The Pornoise tapes are gold.

MRZBW, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:57 (twelve years ago) Permalink

so is this sold out?

i remember downloading at least 10-15 of these and liking the early stuff.

I think Merzbow has to be up there in the 'everyone knows who they are, but no one actually listens to them' category.

Z S, Saturday, 9 June 2007 23:02 (twelve years ago) Permalink

i like merzbow lots. i just have't heard the merzbox.

funny farm, Saturday, 9 June 2007 23:28 (twelve years ago) Permalink

eleven years pass...

Get ready

We're going on a noise adventure in 2019. @EZSnappin and I will be reviewing all 50 discs of Merzbow's Merzbox for a podcasts we're calling IMMERZBOX. Why? Because it's a terrible idea and it must be done. pic.twitter.com/p0QbB3x9IL

IMMERZBOX episode 1

waiting/working on itunes/spotify/aggregator approval.

I tried doing it in 2008 and I believe my summation was "there is no light at the end of the tunnel, only more Merzbow." And that was after hour 6.

visiting, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:11 (four months ago) Permalink

looking forward to listening to this.

visiting, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:12 (four months ago) Permalink

I'm all over this thanks! I love how you sound so weary right from the start.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:37 (four months ago) Permalink

I'm resigned to the next year of Merzbow

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:41 (four months ago) Permalink

Would you rather do this or do the entire SST back catalogue like those two Canadian podcasters? Imagine all the Zoogz Rift and Ginn side projects!

MaresNest, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:43 (four months ago) Permalink

Oh hell no. Also, the sound quality is probably better on the Merzbox.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 23:49 (four months ago) Permalink

Suddenly I remember an old CMJ article where ILM's own Whiney listened straight through the 24-hours-of-live-Throbbing-Gristle box TG24.

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 17 January 2019 03:39 (four months ago) Permalink

Really enjoyed this!

cwkiii, Friday, 18 January 2019 16:57 (four months ago) Permalink

Thanks a lot! Only 49 more albums to go.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:30 (four months ago) Permalink

yeah this was a good listen... "leaf blowers" lol

visiting, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:32 (four months ago) Permalink

All leaf blowers are surprise leaf blowers

EZ Snappin, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:40 (four months ago) Permalink

Keep it up!

Feels like a less flippant version of this:

pomenitul, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:41 (four months ago) Permalink

I think this Discogs post sums it up, my favorite is definitely that middle era but some of the early junk noise stuff is good, like Batz-Tou-Tai

weird experimental duo = 80-88
golden era = 89-98
laptop era = 99-present

I'd actually date the "golden era" as starting with 1990's Cloud Cock OO Grand

sleeve, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:44 (four months ago) Permalink

I'm sure we'll get more flippant as we get worn down but we're trying to give each album a fair shake.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:55 (four months ago) Permalink

in my experience you'll get more flippant until you hit the back third then you'll start to feel like what you are doing is Important and you'll get way too not-flippant and self-indulgent

this is not a shot at you, i just watched all of the nicolas cage movies and i gave way too much credit/ink to his post-2013 output is all

suggest boban (Will M.), Friday, 18 January 2019 18:45 (four months ago) Permalink

very excited for this tho

I really want a Merzbox but I read the packaging fucks up the discs?

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 18 January 2019 18:47 (four months ago) Permalink

I haven't heard that it fucks them up but none are labelled so good luck if you get them out of order.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 18 January 2019 19:03 (four months ago) Permalink

That's not good.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 18 January 2019 19:10 (four months ago) Permalink

Makes you wonder how the Merzcar is doing nowadays.

Actually I just checked, also not good:

Label owner Anders had a rundown Mercedes-Benz 230 that he rarely drove, and the police told him to move it or else it would be towed. So he rigged the CD player to play the label's newest release, Merzbow's Noisembryo, and made it impossible to turn off or remove. He then put the car up for sale as a limited edition of one. It went unsold and eventually broke down. Anders then removed the CD player and got rid of the car.

EZ, this was a great listen! Thoroughly enjoyed this on my way to work. Looking forward to the rest!

Been a long time coming, but this finally made me splash out for a Merzbox! Whiney: The label still has some available for $450, but there are some on discogs going for about 350. Will report back about possible packaging probs.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 22 January 2019 22:24 (four months ago) Permalink

Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Episode 2 will be out shortly and it’s now available on iTunes and the like (though not Spotify yet because there’s extra steps we haven’t done).

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 00:42 (four months ago) Permalink

I listened to the first EP with the disc playing off YouTube in the background, I just nudged the music along to the next track in sync with the discussion and it worked really well.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 00:47 (four months ago) Permalink

The next one is up! Immerzbox episode 2

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 01:34 (four months ago) Permalink

three weeks pass...

We should have the 5th one up today, and our podcast got mentioned in an article on The Wire about another Merzbow podcast. We live in a glorious age of multi-Merzbow podcasting.

The Merzcast is fun, too, if you want to listen outside the 'box.
