the bootleg box set covers all the bases but i dont think many people have heard it.

Enough for people to moan if it wasn't included in the poll though!!

Which is the one about space?

The Macallan 18 Year, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Zeit by a huge margin, but I like pretty much everything up to Rubycon.

unperson, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Stratosfear and Force Majeure are awesome though! Infact i've decided Force Majeure will get my vote. Though on another day it could've been anyone of 7 of them.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 2 June 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link

^ worth every penny. avoid vol 2 though, that one has all the badly recorded bootlegs.

I'll have to be boring and say Phaedra

Joe, Saturday, 2 June 2007 16:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Voted for "Stratosfear" although I prefer "Tangram" and "White Eagle".

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 2 June 2007 17:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't heard Tangram. That's one of the reasons I stopped at 1979.

And Force Majeure is generally seen as their last great album.

And Force Majeure is generally seen as their last great album.

By ambient fans, I would guess. "White Eagle" is a great piece of arpeggio-led melodic instrumental synth music.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 2 June 2007 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

There are some not on the list that have some great music, the Sorcerer soundtrack has some really twisted stuff and I think Tangerine Dream's early to mid-80s records are still pretty good like Poland, Tangram, Exit and Le Parc. They might not be anyone's favorite, but there are some quality tracks on those later records. Sorcerer came out right in the middle of their 70s analog peak, so there are some really good stuff on that soundtrack.

earlnash, Saturday, 2 June 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

EXIT is particularly great

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 2 June 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I will check out Exit. I think a mate of mine got that and Le Parc quite cheap some years ago. Will ask him about it.

If anyone want's to list the great tracks from 1980 after then I would be happy to try check them out.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 3 June 2007 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I just played all of these albums over the weekend and really enjoyed them all. Maybe I should check out Tangram and Last Exit.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Where's "Sorcerer"? That's a good album! Don't like "Tangram".

Tom D., Monday, 4 June 2007 10:17 (sixteen years ago) link

"rubycon", but mainly because it's the last one i listened to and i can't remember whether or not i prefer "phaedra" (i don't think i do).

grimly fiendish, Monday, 4 June 2007 12:15 (sixteen years ago) link

When I was a first-year undergrad, I started with the £3.99 Virgin Value LPs and soon hoovered up most of the rest of their catalogue trying to find another Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares. I didn't and had an anti-epiphany listening to Poland or somesuch '80s live LP and decided to sell the lot.

So I'll have to go for Phaedra.

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 June 2007 12:25 (sixteen years ago) link

i only discovered the 80's tangerine dream (aka The Virgin Years) and know little of their 70s work.
only yesterday i blasted out Tangram which consists of a fair bit of DX7 gumph, but when they hit the right buttons - damn it was good.

The atypical Electronic Meditation gets my vote. Real-life drums make that and Alpha Centauri my favourites of the 7 or 8 TDs I've owned over the years. A reference point demonstrating the difference between orbiting the earth and merely floating motionless.

(I too wish the Sorcerer soundtrack was here.)

A runaway win for Phaedra then. I thought ILM would've seen a win for one of the 1st 4.

Tom D: no, I did own Stuntman and Pinnacles, though. I recall the latter being quite pretty - I may still have the odd track on tape somewhere.

"Epsilon" is great - it was recorded halfway between "Phaedra" and "Rubycon", so how could it not be? First half of title track is a floaty mellotron piece that is really beautiful.

Tom D., Wednesday, 6 June 2007 10:39 (sixteen years ago) link

It's great.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i really should get some more of their stuff. i had a bad experience with one of their eighties albums when i was 16 and it's made me very wary.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I've been enjoying the Sorcerer soundtrack. from 1977, comprised of short pieces, so I guess it's atypical. some synth bits cry out "Depeche Mode!" "80s R&B!" like, prescient.

Ok so what's the scoop on White Eagle? Geir's description sounds like most of what I listen to these days.

lol is not enough (blank), Wednesday, 10 August 2011 02:02 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah that period of T. Dream was very straightforward synth with a very poppy edge to it, so if you like that sort of thing you'll like White Eagle and Hyperborea...will probably hit the spot if you liked those early Jean-Michel Jarre albums like Oxygene and Equinoxe, too.

Took me 11 years but I picked up the two post-Atem Virgin collections (which are very cheap and sound great) and basically every one of these records (ending at 1983's Hyperborea) is pretty excellent. Varies from pop ambient-new age-y synth to haunting moody soundtrack patches to kraut-trance-rock w solos to match. I'll have to sit down and figure out all my faves (Encores and Tangram are both uniformly excellent).

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 3 January 2016 02:59 (eight years ago) link

This past year I picked up the deluxe 2CD reissues of Atem, Alpha Centauri and Zeit, as well as the 4CD Virgin Years: 1974-1978 box, and this week I got the Edgar Froese Solo (1974-1983): The Virgin Years 4CD set as a companion. Lot of great stuff on there.

The amount of music they made in those years is amazing, love Froese's contemporary solo albums as well. TG is basically unimpeachable from their beginning through the mid 70s. And the 80s stuff is pretty cool too!

lute bro (brimstead), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:15 (eight years ago) link

The amount of *quality* music, I should say. The purest 'light a spliff' records if you're willing

lute bro (brimstead), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:16 (eight years ago) link

Force Majeure is my favorite TG album, though, by far

lute bro (brimstead), Sunday, 3 January 2016 03:17 (eight years ago) link

i find it hard to single out a fave as this whole era of the band is full of perfection for me.
from the early space rock grooves, via the bonkers vocals album (which i hated at first, but now love), to the then futuristic sounding brilliant use of midi enhanced sequencers.
a year ago i got the EF boxset and since then, my limited 12Gb phone has had the following on it :
the complete Virgin era TD material, the EF boxset, Kraftwerk remasters and the latest Neu! remasters.
i have had a few sonic based detours over the last 12 months, but this core set has been my mainstay of 2015.
and i am still not bored with any of it.
(hence the revival of the FAX groove in recent weeks)

Just listening to "Alpha Centauri", SOMEONE SHOOT THAT FLUTE PLAYER FFS! I use the phrase 'flute player' rather than 'flautist' because flautist implies someone who has some skill and knows what they're doing. The flute is a nearly insurmountable problem with a lot of (early) Krautrock - Florian Schneider is the only person who seems able to do anything useful with the damn thing. Also "Alpha Centauri" isn't very good.

Bridge Over Thorley Waters (Tom D.), Friday, 27 March 2020 15:16 (four years ago) link

flute is a beautiful sound you monster

the longer i've lived with TD the less interest i've got in anything from Ricochet on tbh

I've decided I really don't like "Force Majeure" very much apart from that awesome end section to "Thru Metamorphic Rocks". The rest of it is too like tasteful prog rock for my taste, too 'musical', and too much guitar and, as I think I've said ad nauseum, I don't like Edgar Froese's guitar playing at all.

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 April 2020 22:55 (three years ago) link

I agree with you vis-a-vis Froese's axe-spanking. Dude seemed to think he was some kind of Neil Young-manqué, but he really hadn't the chops. None of that detracts from his talent as a visionary electronicist, mind.

Also, I don't think they were very good at writing melodies - Schmoelling was the melody guy, and he didn't join them till later, I think? This album is just Froese and Franke, right?

dang, i am such a doofus. i love the tangerine dream records i have (zeit, phaedra, stratosphear, and Froese's Aqua), and i've heard their 80s music through various film soundtracks (ok, Legend mostly), but i had no idea about Force Majeure. i kind of assumed their band trajectory was the ambient early stuff --> soundtracks and more cheesy stuff i knew they had more traditional band roots but i didn't realize they had an album like this, and especially not one in the late 70s! oops.

Also, since TD literally invented that sequencer-driven style of composition, it's kind of a low blow to insinuate that their use of the technique was uninspired!

brimstead, Saturday, 25 April 2020 01:25 (three years ago) link

I think "Phaedra" is the first one with sequencers but it is pretty much their signature sound, or definitely the most recognisable.

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Saturday, 25 April 2020 01:28 (three years ago) link

I mean, "That sounds like Tangerine Dream", doesn't usually refer to guitar playing that reminds you of Edgar Froese, for instance.
