Cherrelle - "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"

I found a mix CD recently, and the song "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" is the first track. At first I had no idea what it was even called, but that line repeats a lot so I Googled it, and it seems like that's the title.

Looks like Robert Palmer wrote it, but this version is like bombastic synth-pop w/ a female voice. Is this Cherelle (again, Google)?

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG. Who is Cherelle and is she worth looking into? What else should I dig up if I'm head over heels for this?

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 May 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

one of my favorite dancing songs! it's a jam & lewis production so you can start with checking out their other production works. their Ĺ“uvre is chock-a-block with greatness.

Jeb, Thursday, 31 May 2007 00:17 (sixteen years ago) link

OMG I KNEW it must be jam and lewis - wait are they the duo who did control? cuz it sounds sooo much like that

"Saturday Love" by Cherelle and Alexander O'Neal was great.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 31 May 2007 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Her greatest hits has other nuggets.

Surmounter, it was written and produced by Jam/Lewis. Read this for more.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 May 2007 00:28 (sixteen years ago) link

"Saturday Love" is her greatest song, actually.

A mere 6.8 for "someone to call my lover"? MADNESS!

is there a story with this and prince's 1999? i always wondered.

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 May 2007 01:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait a minute, wait a minute. Robert Palmer *wrote* it?? I heard the Cherelle version first and assumed he'd covered it, since his version didn't come out until later.

Bimble, Thursday, 31 May 2007 01:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, allmusic says Palmer didn't write it.

Bimble, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, I remember liking the Cherelle version a lot, it was during this time when I listened to nothing but this R&B radio station all the time.

Bimble, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:02 (sixteen years ago) link

this + 1999 - in that it's the same beat, both came out 84 (which wz first?), jam&lewis kicked out the band the year before? sorry if this is some hackneyed old tale already. or if its just a coincidence.

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Ahh! Here it is on YouTube! I haven't heard this song in eons!!!

Mariah Carey also covered it on the Glitter soundtrack.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember "Fragile" being underrated as an album, even if "High Priority" has the big hits.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Hm...well this song doesn't sound near as earth shattering now as it did then. Sounds dated, in fact. At the time it really stood out among all the other stuff on that radio station, I swear...

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

hmmm... this was considered some pretty wack shit in my NYC circles.

I mean yeah, it was on the radio every five minutes and isn't terrible exactly but it ain't Shannon neitha.

I hate the production. SOS Band, Alexander O'Neal... All that shit sounded way too slick at the time but seems to get a lotta love nowadays. Jam/Lewis = way overrated IMO. Mobbed up shit.

Bit MOR=sounding, buppie 80's shit really for the Dennis Hopson haircut crowd.

Anyone really cool was trippin heavy on "Somebody Else's Guy" right about then, which blows this shit to pieces. That doesn't completely invalidate this piece of music of course, but just sayin, if you was around then, you woulda been into something a bit cooler I am guessing. not hatin, lovin.

Hmmm anyone heard this Lalo Schifrin 12" on Tabu?!

Saxby D. Elder, Friday, 1 June 2007 03:30 (sixteen years ago) link

OMG Somebody Else's Guy is on this random mix I found too - and it's great!!!

Surmounter, Friday, 1 June 2007 04:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, this totally sounds like shake-your-hips music for the ritzy and tipsy crowd - but it's none the worse for it. "Somebody Else's Guy" is great too, of course, but pitting mid-80s club smashes against each other feels a bit silly given how spectacular most of them were/are.

Jeb, Friday, 1 June 2007 05:29 (sixteen years ago) link

well OK what other mid-80s club smashes should i get then

Surmounter, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Personally I feel like Jam/Lewis productions sound better today than they were back then. In the mid 80s they were a bit too "radical", whereas today, when one is used to hearing way more extreme stuff, Jam/Lewis sound OK.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I still despise "Nasty" though!

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know how SOS Band and Cherrelle can be considered slick. Explain.

Thanks for setting us straight, Saxby.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 June 2007 14:45 (sixteen years ago) link

also i do think certain music sounds better at certain times. this song coulda sounded what, not that revolutionary back then, by the standards of sound of the moment. now, because music has explored different things, it's a welcome treat.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 June 2007 14:48 (sixteen years ago) link

That doesn't completely invalidate this piece of music of course, but just sayin, if you was around then, you woulda been into something a bit cooler I am guessing.

Yeah, I could do without hearing a whole lot of Janet's stuff, but I've been gobbling up all the Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle, and SOS Band stuff I didn't here nearly as much as Janet down here in rural NC. I'll always have a soft spot for "Human" as well even though it is as slick as slick could get. It just sounds gorgeously pristine. I actually found the "Criticize" 12" and the "I Didn't Mean to Turn You One" 12" both in the dollar bin at Dusty Groove during my only visit there. A fine day it was. As for more stuff to looks for Surmounter, lots of stuff recommended here:

Shannon and Jocelyn Brown were somewhere around the top of the charts with Cherrelle and SOS Band. All four could be heard on the same station within the same hour. I was "around" then and have a hard time buying that Jocelyn was actually the Fugazi to SOS Band's Silverchair or whatever.

"Human" was obviously a great song, but I still cannot get myself to really enjoy that because I found what Human League had usually been doing so much better. Plus the rest of the "Crash" album was mostly rubbish.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:16 (sixteen years ago) link

While it's no lost classic, Crash showed that the League really had nothing more to say. Most of the songs are pretty good to great, and would have better served Janet or the SOS Band. "Jam," "Human" and what I think is the loveliest thing Jam/Lewis ever did the 12" mix of "Love is All That Matters" are the only things on which Phil Oakey doesn't disgrace himself.

Uhm, Saxby, dude's called himself "little lord fauntleroy". Don't you think he just might possibly be a troll asking for exactly the sort of reaction you just gave him?

hmmm, yeah maybe. I can be a bit of a babe in the woods about that sort of thing. I always just assume people are straight up but obviously that is really naive. Plus I really don't look at the people's names... maybe better start I guess. I just really don't ever want to become one of these people that knows the difference between Marcello and Geir. I just want to chat about music and learn stuff. If someone is DIRECTLY NICE to me, I will remember that. (and remember the people I hate too, I guess)

I didn't mind pounding him anyway. Some of these same issues came up in the LDN is a victim thread too. I feel pretty strongly about that stuff.

bimble vs. saxby = the perfect storm?

heh, I am SO never dealing with Bimble again, unless maybe someone offers us a lucrative reality TV show contract.

Saxby, I'd like it if you'd start a thread about the Paradise Garage and your memories of it. Some of the things you said above are pretty interesting. Good to get some context on this (and other) records too - would never have guessed that IDMTTYO was frowned upon by the top level DJ guys. I still love it, but it's good to get a handle on how it was perceived at the time.

Another great song that hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet: Donna Allen - Serious (Do we have a better term for this type of music other than '80s disco'?)

NI, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I picked up the "Serious" 12" for 50 cents last year. A pretty weak production but it was fun hearing where Strike's "U Sure Do" came from. I'd classify it as '80s R&B/dancepop.

would never have guessed that IDMTTYO was frowned upon by the top level DJ guys

Listening to it again, it makes sense. Even in the seven minute mix, there's no break or real instrumental section that would appeal to clubbers/DJs. It's very pop.

A pretty weak production but it was fun hearing where Strike's "U Sure Do" came from.

Did Strike sample Donna? Aw, it's not weak though, it's very very pop so I guess the PG bigwigs would have sneered but it sounds great played out.

NI, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Surmounter, I'm sure it's too late now but I'd recommend the first SOS Band album if you really want an album and not a comp. I pretty positive that Jam and Lewis had nothing to do with that one though so maybe it's not what you'd want.

matt2, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:14 (sixteen years ago) link

well, i mean i wasn't specifically looking for jam and lewis, but for that sound

and i realized that i don't necessarily have to place a big amazon order - i do like the independent sellers, so it's not like i'm saving on shipping buying everything at once

i ended up ordering: Cherrelle - High Priority, Rene and Angela - Street, and something else on the thread linked above - Loose Ends or something it was called? i'm so xcited. i also bought a ton of kristin hersh, the new bjork and a That Dog album.

Thank you! A "radio record" maybe? (btw, thanks dude, you make sense to me and I will try to remember you are saaaafe).

Saxby, I'd like it if you'd start a thread about the Paradise Garage and your memories of it.

Yeah, hey cool except I don't know if you are just some troll trying to get me to make an ass out of myself somehow (which given half a chance I probably would do). "So Larry rolled his eyes and said to me...."

The other thing really is that I aim to actually stay anonymous on here. If I really get into who I was actually running with (or really much about much), you'll be able to Google me or some shit that I just ain't into.

That Dog

Anna W. forev. <3 her solo album is also probably a nice pickup at ebay prices.

By the way, just in closing, it really isn't terribly amusing to me the way the mob took over independent dance music and turned it into oceans of buppie MOR sludge, "R&B" and "hip-hop". Support that shit if you want but I ain't about it. I hate to say it (for one thing because it's a bit painful) but if all them cool gay people hadn't died, it probably wouldn't have really went down quite the same way.

Like, really, Saxby is out this bitch. Watch out for the clothing line.
