Blueboy request

Really liking Lovejoy and Beaumont has lead me to search out some Blueboy releases, a band I had curiously avoided when they actually existed. Anyway, I have some of the singles and the last album, The Bank of England, but not the other albums. I want to avoid paying a fortune on ebay, so can anyone burn me cdr copies of If Wishes Were Horses and Unisex (and Speedboat or other singles id you have them)? I will reimburse for cdr's and shipping (I am in the USA) or burn you some stuff in return...

Thanks

If someone does want to make CD-R's and is super excited about it - I've been wanting to get the above 2 albums for ages!!!! I'll also pay for shipping etc, or bake you a pie if you live in London.

If I talk nicely to my mate I'll see if he'll burn you off copies of my CDs for you both, plus singles and stuff. Blueboy - I loved 'em!

is this the same Blueboy as in 'Remember Me'?

Blimey. Everyone hated us at the time.

But now you are worshipped and adored, sir! Or so it sounds like, I still haven't heard ya myself.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Harvey, were you in Blueboy? I knew Keith Girdler in Reading back in the mid 80's, in fact I joined a band as his replacement when he went off to do other things. If you're still in touch ask him if he remembers Emotional Jacuzzi.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Keep meaning to ask Keith about that - Pam & I have had a right chuckle over it, but have never plucked up the courage to drop it into conversation, in case it's something he'd rather forget.

Anyways, I have both of these Blueboy albums and, seeing as Wishes is dead short, they'll fit snugly on a single 80min CD- R. Mail me offline and I can do the copying. Alternatively mail me offline if you're connected with Sarah Records and strongly disapprove of this sort of thing, and I *won't* do any copying.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What? Do YOU know Keith, Mike? Actually Emotional Jacuzzi were alright, especially though a bit *stadium*. KG wrote some really good lyrics. Their only recorded work 'Beside The Pool' is much more pastoral than their live persona. After I joined we went more *Factory* and had extra drummers/percussion and stuff.

[different Blueboy by the sound of it. Ignore me!]

michael, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, I know everyone, Doc.

I think "Remember Me" was by The Blueboy, and is a fantastic record.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not bad for a Sarah records thread...

Anyway, I have arranged off list a pie-music exchange. Cheers! Now... if I could only get that Another Sunny Day singles compilation.... :-)

Marianna, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the ASD compilation is a source of perpetual frustration to me. I've got all the singles bar Anorak City, and I'm not paying through the nose on eBay for it.. maybe someone nice could CDR it for me? I have much to offer in return..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i have London Weekend (the ASD comp) on vinyl, but, as i said upthread, i cant tape or cdr anything at the moment, but i'll be able to soon hopefully, when i sort myself somewhere to live

gareth, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I once bought an ASD single at a record store in Angel. I looked at the vinyl to make sure it was in good condition. I went home. I played the single. It wasn't ASD - it was the Teenage Fanclub. I bought a Teenage Fanclub 7" in an ASD sleeve. I was too dissappointed to go back and demand by £5 back.

Keith Girdler RIP

Oh no - this is awful. As I said upthread I knew Keith briefly, half a lifetime ago, when he was the singer in a band with some friends of mine. I remember one of their first gigs, in the main hall of Reading University - Keith swirling his shirt above his head and introducing the band during the outro of one of the songs, perfectly in time so that the final 'and I'm Keith!' rang out as the band stopped dead. He wrote some terrific songs - one in particular that I remember called 'The Apotheosis of Love', the lyrics of which WH Auden would have been proud of. Another fond memory is going along with Keith to see James at the ICA - he knew the band and we sat with them as they were interviewed by Mark Ellen for the OGWT broadcast. Keith moved away from Reading after a short while, I briefly joined the band he left, then I left the area too. I never saw Keith again, or heard a note of his subsequent music, but he made a real impression on me in the brief time that I knew him - a really kind, ultra-enthusiastic and creative person.

RIP Keith, you won't be forgotten.

sad.

started off as a fan but he was a friend of various friends so i got to meet him several times, memories of him aboard the thekla looking like morrissey, sat in the betsy, the blue posts, various rooms in greenwich and crystal palace and a couple of trips with the ex to visit him in brighton.

he had a birthday party the one year, a semi-secret in a social club or something in the backstreets of reading. i think we were the only two people there who weren't close personal friends. halfway through the remains of blueboy (this was post-sarah, pre-shinkansen, i think) played half a dozen acoustic songs, mostly new, unknown stuff. was great.

Heard about this last night. Awful.

Pam & I sort of lost touch with him over the last couple of years; we still have a box of his 1980s 7"s with which he DJ'd at one of our little events at the Blue Posts. We knew he was ill but how serious it was sort of went unspoken.

He had lots of grand and daft plans for the Snowdrops, some I think purely to wind up Jimmy T ("hey, how about GW Bush tour T-shirts?") at the label.

Bless him.

had forgotten this but i did a tiny microsite for the first beaumont lp:
http://listen.to/beaumont

(has a couple of samples if dr c is interested. that said, blueboy were the epitome of the sarah sound so he'll probably hate them. keith's voice and paul's guitar were rarely bettered. have put a couple of the meatier tracks here as well: popkiss and imipramine)

had also forgotten that they played that night at the betsy trotwood (supported by the pines). dug out the recording last night and will post it tomorrow, probably. also found my copy of mike's recording of greenwich gig...

Nice little post here:

Have actually never heard of the band before, but the stuff on Spotify is really lovely.

they were so lovely. paul stewart made a couple of beautiful records without keith but it didn't seem the same. is he, paul, obviously, still active?

Louis Philippe's cover of "Lazy Thunderstorms" (off the Keith Girdler tribute album) is really really touching and beautiful.

and tbh it was the cover version that inspired me to seek out the original. I still haven't heard the rest of that tribute album.

Stephen Burt! He wrote Adventure Playground! So awesome.

"Clearer" from the Engine Common compilation is pure pop heaven. The whole record is great, but Blueboy's song stands out.

I tried but failed to get into the albums, but so happy to be reminded of this beautiful song every now and again:

Funny to see Harvey pop in upthread (presumably).

Anyway, not finding any footage of Blueboy live on youtube (tbh could search a little harder I suppose). Anyone know if footage exists online anywhere?

Unisex is an underappreciated classic, it's perfect start to finish.

heckuva finish too (Imipramine specifically)
