Their live shows are a sham now as far as performances go. Rick just raises faders and applies some light effects. Everything is the same night to night. The Live Here Now shows are very similar from that Oblivion tour so just find the one with the best set list and get that one. I still have doubles of almost every show from that tour so if you want to buy one, let me know.

I found a t0rr3nt that has them all that's almost finished ;)

Their early tours were amazing with loads of live improvs and differing set lists. Nowadays not so much.

What was the name of the one we put together over on the dirty forums? Still got the cd somwehere but can't remember what it was called

groovypanda, Sunday, 18 September 2016 19:56 (seven years ago) link

Bootleg Babies

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 18 September 2016 20:32 (seven years ago) link

Oh, that was in the torrent I got!! I'll listen to that first.

the 2005 live Tokyo set was incredible. felt like an Everything, Everything Pt 2 in some ways though it was much longer.

frogbs, Monday, 19 September 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

hmm can anyone hook me up w/tokyo 2005?

nomar, Monday, 19 September 2016 21:07 (seven years ago) link

savvinesslessness (map), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 03:28 (seven years ago) link

can't wait to try it w/ the live Tokyo set, i might combust when "Two Months Off" comes on

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 13:25 (seven years ago) link

also holy crap I cannot believe DJP started this thread, he is like #1 Underworld fan!!

still not a fan of Second Toughest... though

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 13:56 (seven years ago) link

I wasn't either for a while, I'm still not as a whole, but Juanita/Kiteless/To Dream of Love, Rowla, and Pearl's Girl have all grown on me.

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 14:54 (seven years ago) link

Pearl's Girl is fantastic, yes

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 15:38 (seven years ago) link

Ambient Underworld is much more interesting to me than the beat driven club tracks. Wish they'd give up on the club tracks and just focus on the atmospheric stuff now.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 16:05 (seven years ago) link

+1 to UW being incredible work out music.

I would hate to have them focus on one particular aspect of their sound - they've been so good at basically everything

frogbs, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

I think "Motorhome" from their new album is prob in their top 15 or maybe even 10 tracks, it is so beautiful and impeccably-textured! It sounds like Eno or some shit ("High Life" must have really rubbed off on them)

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link

I have taught my toddlers how to sing the main synth theme from "If Rah" and they periodically request the song by shouting "LUNA LUNA LUNA" at me

I will accept my Greatest Dad Ever award now

¶ (DJP), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

I've tried with that new album like five times and I just find it so boring. Can't get into it at all.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 20:29 (seven years ago) link

That's / too / bad

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 22:36 (seven years ago) link

they periodically request the song by shouting "LUNA LUNA LUNA" at me

Presumably when they're old enough they can move on to LAGER LAGER LAGER LAGER

I hear from this arsehole again, he's going in the river (James Morrison), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link

new album still sounds awesome to me

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 02:28 (seven years ago) link

i've only tried once but so far i'm with don van gorp. i don't hear any of the focus or tension between carefully calibrated parts in a ruthless point-a-to-point-b sweep that i feel like made them great at their best, just an unfocused pile-on of bland ideas meandering and lyrics that have gone from compelling-and-slightly-embarrassing to drunk-dad-cringey.

savvinesslessness (map), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 03:36 (seven years ago) link

The 2nd half of the album is better.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 03:39 (seven years ago) link

i'll have to give it another shot, i was almost there on a few of the later tracks.

savvinesslessness (map), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 03:42 (seven years ago) link

i liked the one before this i think??? it's so much easier just to go back to the stone classics idk.

savvinesslessness (map), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 03:44 (seven years ago) link

yeah I mean I don't think it's stone classic but it's still a really great album even if it's not excellent, one of the best recs of the year and kind of astounding they're still releasing stuff so solid like 20+ years in

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 04:15 (seven years ago) link

i actually think this is better than anything they've released aside from their dubno/stiti/bf run. i like meandering ambient late night driving underworld best of all.

nomar, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 21:25 (seven years ago) link

new one is about equal to oblivion with bells for me, which, thanks ilx for making me try with that record so much that it's sorta my preferred underworld experience these days

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 21:30 (seven years ago) link

I really like all seven of their albums so I find this sort of thing difficult, especially since I'd rather hear "Best Mamgu Ever" over "Rez" these days.

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 21:51 (seven years ago) link

i love classic cuts like 'rez' but i feel like their deep cuts are often pretty revelatory and inspiring, like idk 'luetin' or 'air towel'..

nomar, Thursday, 22 September 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link

I made a playlist on Spotify of the tracks I now prefer. Sadly, not all of the ones I'd like to include were available.

omg M.E. is SO GREAT AND UNDERRATED

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link

I have loved "Luetin" since I first heard it even though I spent like 3-4 years calling it "Lutein"

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

holy crap I am literally just now realizign it is not called "Lutein"

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:47 (seven years ago) link

also I keep calling it "Juniata" bcz that is the name of a neighborhood in Philly

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

good christ i love m.e., it's one of their hippiest sunrise on ibiza tracks too.

nomar, Thursday, 22 September 2016 20:52 (seven years ago) link

I've tried with that new album like five times and I just find it so boring. Can't get into it at all.

I also was not down until I listened to this live date from this year which brought it all together for me

Brakhage, Thursday, 22 September 2016 21:30 (seven years ago) link

I've never understood why people are down on M.E

From day one, it's always been one of the (many) highlights on Dubno for me

groovypanda, Friday, 23 September 2016 08:29 (seven years ago) link

if you dig you can find the original version from '91 back when it was intended to go on the follow up to Change the Weather

frogbs, Friday, 23 September 2016 11:11 (seven years ago) link

whoa seriously?? I am investigating this at once

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 23 September 2016 16:57 (seven years ago) link

also xp to Brakhage does it sound all that diff from the album cuts?

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 23 September 2016 17:00 (seven years ago) link

It's not nearly as varied as the Tokyo 2005 date linked above (which may be because they didn't have time for a longer set, or because their live performances are more lackluster now, like people are saying), and yeah it sounds identical to the LP like Kraftwerk live dates, but it has great energy because of the crowd. The tracks that I thought just laid there inert on the new record sounded a lot more vital to me, I think it's worth tracking down

Brakhage, Friday, 23 September 2016 20:53 (seven years ago) link

Which reminds me, thanks Brad for the YT playlist of the '05 gig

Brakhage, Friday, 23 September 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link

the Tokyo 05 date is great but the constant edging of "Mmm Skyscraper" with no drop or climax or anything is so odd!

laraaji p. henson (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 24 September 2016 01:04 (seven years ago) link

four months pass...

1996 Dutch doc filmed at a Megadog night in Leeds with live footage and attempted interviews with Underworld.

Think that would have been 93/94 when they did that Midi Circus tour with the likes of Underworld, Aphex, Orbital, Eat Static etc
