NO get their feet wet in Port Royal town. Actually, this is probably the most Electronic sounding NO song. What do we think of Barney's, humm, "skills"?

In a manger like Christ I lay
Yellow fever, yellow hay
Feel the rhythm, sweetest sound
Making, breaking sacred ground
I'd give you a piece of my love for free
But whatever I say you'll never see
Acquire a taste for a different sound
Make or break it this side of town

Life will never be the same
In Port-Royal town, I hear it coming
The shaking of the ground
They're stealing in the day
In Port-Royal town, the children are running

Ever strange the lives we lead
So detached from the things we need
Signs of greed in everyone
Instant eviction and the blood on a gun
Just when you think you've found it
Spinning world I want to spin around it
What is wrong? This pain won't peel
The fibres of my life won't heal

OTM on this being one of New Order's most Electronic-esque songs, down to the marvelous oboe hook that reminds me of "Some Distant Memory" (it sounds actually like Bernard programmed everything except Hook's bass and the oboe hook).

Yes, it came on this morning and the oboe part was what made me think of Electronic.

I like it for the sense of menace. Would have fit in well on the soundtrack to Dark Angel.

Is it a new record?

PJ Miller, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:34 (sixteen years ago) link

No, it's on 'Republic'.

OK.

It's NO's rap record.

Yellow fever, yellow hay

these are the most new ordery new order lyrics ever.

guys I love this song. And "Young Offender."

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually "Young Offender" is even more Electronic-esque than "Times Change"

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 24 May 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

is the oboe by Kate St. John?

Yeah, I forgot to say: classic.

I always loved the pre-apocalyptic vibe of the song. Some kind of life-shattering earthquake seems to be on the way in the god-forsaken town of Port Royal, while Barney finds solace in detached existential musings.

... and all of "republic". listened to it the other day and i really do think it's an underrated masterpiece.

also listened to WFTSC again. it's okay, isn't it? i think my loathing of "get ready" blinds me slightly to what followed.

still got some hellishly dull guitar bits, mind.

I was playing WFTSC the other day as well and was shocked to realize that I don't hate "Turn" as much as I used to (although it still feels cobbled together).

Some kind of life-shattering earthquake seems to be on the way in the god-forsaken town of Port Royal

it's based on a true story!

'Turn' rocks. You are all deaf.

twelve years pass...

So weird to see them open with this on their MIF live set (or at least as it presented on the new live album)
