Musicians Wearing Shirts from Bands That Sound Nothing Like Them

"Although my public/ performance personna is consistently this one thing, this t-shirt is indicative of what'd it be like to have sex with me." At least that's how I interpret that Durst photo, and the Duff one, too.

So Durst has sex like a Smiths fan and Duff loves like Motorhead.

Classic post.

I can't seem to find a freeze frame anywhere, but my favorite mismatch is the Public Enemy t-shirt on Donnie Wahlberg in the New Kids on the Block "Step by Step" video:

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

four months pass...

...what about noize laydees wearing Manics shirts? Does that count?

three weeks pass...

i always thought it would be funny if some trendy new act wore the shirts of really naff bands like sublime or hoobastank.

hate this q so much

surprise, very few musicians only want to rep for music that sounds like what they do. because, shocker, musicians like lots of different kinds of music. WOW INCREDIBLE THEY MUST BE POSING BY WEARING SHIRTS FOR BANDS THAT DON'T SOUND LIKE WHAT THEY DO.

No one said anything about "posing" -- I thought this was just a thread for pictures of musicians in other bands' shirts.

yeah I know it's just it always feels like this implicit "no way Avril likes the Ramones, after all she sucks!" vibe (we had a huge throwdown about that way back) and while I am a little sympathetic to the position "a person should only wear a band/musician t-shirt if they actually like that band/musician" I am deeply unsympathetic to the position "a person whose music I hate couldn't love music I like, it is at the least very unlikely"

there are explicit refutations of that position you hate in this thread, aero, not least from its creator.

Chuck Schuldiner from Death in a Blondie shirt. No doubt his stylist made him wear it.

I think it's a sex code thing more than an overt statement of affiliation with any particular band/ genre. It's like they're saying, "Although my public/ performance personna is consistently this one thing, this t-shirt is indicative of what'd it be like to have sex with me." At least that's how I interpret that Durst photo, and the Duff one, too.

two examples from this thread

This thread would be a lot more fun if it it was less "LOL FAMOUS PERSON DOESN'T KNOW AS MUCH ABOUT BAND AS ME BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO BUSY BEING FAMOUS" and was more "Hey, isn't this neat?"

We're all adults, the fact that one of the jocks likes your favorite band should have stopped bothering you, like, freshman year of college.

Nothing will be as epic/awesome as Jordan in a Bauhaus t-shirt anyway.

Well, one of my friends was deeply into tepid indie bollocks, but regularly wore a t-shirt that proclaimed "McFly are actually quite good"!!!!!!!!!

And, what's more, he wasn't being ironic!!!!!! He actually quite liked McFly!!!!! That's why wore so often!!!!!!!

So there!!!!!!!

all these famouses are already on t-shirts and have identities that are reducible to a t-shirt. they're walking t-shirts themselves. the semiotics of a walking t-shirt wearing a t-shirt are going to be different than those of a civilian wearing the same shirt.

like i could subsume my identity in a smiths shirt but durst can't recede in the same way. he can only scramble the durst signal, redirect it, attempt counterpoint or amplification, or point to something interior but he can't lose himself in the smiths signal.

not sayin these ppl can't wear a band shirt for the same reasons as anybody else but ilx and authorial intent etc..

slugbuggy, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 09:17 (eleven years ago) link

What yr sayin' is, it's quite possible that a famous wearing a tshirt could in itself become a t-shirt with meaning, but a famous could not wear that shirt because π

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

you mean like durst wearing a shirt that has a pic of duff wearing a motorhead shirt? only if that was an officially merchandised duff shirt, and the duff/ motorhead conflict collapsed into a singularity. otherwise it's just a dickhead wearing some shirt.
