. huggy bear causing a near-riot doing HER JAZZ the week of release
. k cobain esq announcing that courtney love is '...the best fuck in the world'
. blur kicking off the first (only good) year of britpop on the weekend GIRLS AND BOYS went top 5
. L7 dropping their trousers
. mark lamarr having a furious go at shabba ranks for making no-apologies homophobic comments

and all live!

who do i/we have to petition?

Because it would mean more money for T Christian.

I would love to see that clip of New Kingdom on the Word again. I'd pay for a DVD with that on.

There is a clip of Stereolab on that Stereolab DVD that came with the 3CD singles compilation thing.

I sold it, what kind of fool am I?

The kind who is sporadically very poor, that's what kind.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, you can all say what you like about The Word, just don't be mean to Ms Puckrik.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:01 (seventeen years ago) link

I can remember lots of good bands - stereolab, air, sepultura, the posies, redd kross, dino jr & others. Apart from that though, the program was awful crass bollocks. K Puckrick is hott, but she was annoying on "the word". It was better than "the girlie show", but that isn't saying much.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:03 (seventeen years ago) link

To answer the original question, I would guess it's down to the usual copyright/licensing issues.

Oliver Reed, motherfuckers.

blueski, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I watched The Word every week as they had great bands on a lot of the time. I have some of that footage on VHS, well scattered over hundreds of video tapes anyway.
A pre-chemical bros "aerial" performance is on one of them.

Killdozer + American Pie = Great + Terrible

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked it when the Marquis of Blandford was on it. He said his fave singer was Neil Young, providing T Christian w/ a rare opportunity for continuity as he nodded his head in the direction of St Etienne (who'd recently performed Yr In A Bad Way, iirc) and said "Maybe you'd like their version of "Only Love - Will Break Yr Heart".

oh and the dash was there for a reason, he paused breathlessly midway thru the song title.

Digible Planets were excellent on The Word.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:29 (seventeen years ago) link

The Word: it gave Jo Whiley a career.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Argh. I'd forgotten about that.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:38 (seventeen years ago) link

She was chief booker for all the bands.

Shoeless, not hairless.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:04 (seventeen years ago) link

"Killdozer + American Pie = Great + Terrible"

That was on Club X, which was a sort of Word forerunner in the late 80s. That Killdozer performance was great, though.

The Pixies on the very first Word doing a metal'd up version of Cecilia Ann was particularly excellent!

M Carty, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Club X? I'm confused now! Was that the Normski thing?

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Club X was the one where Paul Morley started brukkus with some dude that threw water at him.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:35 (seventeen years ago) link

... and where Simon Fisher-Turner once staged an Yves Klein's blue paint/naked women type happening

Tom D., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:38 (seventeen years ago) link

It got pulled because of rubbish ratings, and yet...

during the final show, the transmitters goofed and broadcast C4 on both the C4 and the ITV channels.

biggest ever audience! (but I don't think it counts for ratings)

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I couldn't remember exactly what Hufty looked like. Image search provided me with this man who seems to have a breast for a tricep. That's close enough I suppose...

onimo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:39 (seventeen years ago) link

So Club X - um, was that the one that Tony Wilson always used to be on then? (sorry, my memory is shot!)[SPOILER ALERT: for those who are planning on having the answer revealed to them in the quiet comfort of some horrible old folks' home in Smethwick in the year 2046, look away now]

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Tony Wilson - The Other Side of Midnight, which I thought only went out in the Granada area. Early Stone Roses appearance, Wilson battling with (possibly) Morley and Elms while suffering from laryngitis, Wilson waxing lyrical about some Rothko exhibition, Keith Allen slagging off everyone he'd ever worked with - it was good stuff from what I dimly remember.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, yes you're right! (Let's do cocoa and incontinence together sometime)

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Hold on, i'm getting confused now, I thought "The Other Side of Midnight" was the show where Oliver Reed molested Kate Millett - in fact, easily Oliver Reed's greatest performance and the one you never see anywhere (did they scrub the tapes?)

Tom D., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:53 (seventeen years ago) link

We in thames/Carlton? region got the Other Side of Midnight. I have the Stone Roses performance on an old VHS as proof.

Mark G, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Which was the one where Oliver Reed undid his belt then proceeded to walk up and down, causing his trouser to fall down?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 11:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Women In Love?

NickB, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 12:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Tom - that was After Dark, C4's "open-ended" panel discussion show, where people were encouraged to ramble on and on until the last person awake in the broadcast suite faded them out. Reedy got lairy on that.

The worst one I can remember was Jon Pleased Wimmin - a tranny ineptly posturing on a grand piano over a taped playback of bad piano house (typing it out, it sounds awesome, in reality it was piss-boring)

Pashmina, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i remember that too. it was JPW's own single 'P.A.S.S.I.O.N.', sampling The Flirts.

808 State performed the theme tune in the studio one time too. that was nice.

blueski, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I forgot all about Hufty until I read this thread, she was quite appalling, though not as bad as Amanda de Cadenet's brother who also presented it iirc And both were better than child model Felix who presented the Tube. WTF they were thinking of, meedja types back in the 80's were obviously even more up their own arses than they are now.

Hufty, and indeed everyone on The Word would be a shoo-in for Big Brother if they'd made it back then.

Ah, now... was that the Friday night live version, where Marky missed his cue and failed to join Shabba on stage - or the Saturday night repeat, which substituted a retake, during which Marky defended Shabba's earlier "gays should be crucified" comments, prompting Shabba to reply with a snatch of "Boom Bye Bye"?
