classic neil

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:40 (six years ago) link

i love neil but this is what you get when someone who doesn't know anything about UI designs the UI

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:40 (six years ago) link

it's like i realize it's an archive and in some ways a filing cabinet is a metaphor but you didn't have to make us all literally "thumb through" the digital file cabinet neil!!!! fuck

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link

the website is shaped like a Toblerone

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:43 (six years ago) link

the mynah birds motown single is up but not playable

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:43 (six years ago) link

‘fuckit, they’ve waited 40 years for this stuff, let’s make ‘em jump through some final hoops before getting to that dictaphone recording of ‘t-bone’ from 1981’

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:44 (six years ago) link

this is so weird.
if you see a song, click on the little "file" icon on the track list, it brings up all sorts of stuff like photos and even sheet music and stuff, handwritten lyrics

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:45 (six years ago) link

doesn't seeeem like there's anything to listen to that isn't just previously released stuff

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

he talks about that early daze thing in one of the memoirs — from what I understand it's early horse material from before neil hooked up with them.

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

what's "The Complex Sessions" (w/Crazy Horse directed by Jonathan Demme 95?)

also there's weird unreleased tracks in the file cabinet thing that aren't attached to any album if you spot em, like I found a file for an Americana-era Crazy Horse cover of this Pistol Annies/Miranda Lambert song

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

there's content-free "files" for Soundtrack 1, Soundtrack 2, Soundtrack 3, and Soundtrack 4 that look to be placed between Peace Trail and The Visitor

this is too much

this interface is ridiculous

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:01 (six years ago) link

complex sessions is a sleeps with angel-era live in the studio vhs (can't remember if it ever came out on dvd)

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

yeah I have no idea what any of you guys are talking about because navigating this thing is totally impenetrable

oh well

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

to think I once saw the archives with my own eyes

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

i was going to say "hey if anyone manages to find something cool send a link" but i'm not sure links would work?

like, this is a link to Le Noise: does it work for anyone else: http://www.neilyoungarchives.com/#/album?id=A_072&_k=x71iqr

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

nope

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:06 (six years ago) link

lol at this thing. there are pop-ups on top of pop-ups

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:07 (six years ago) link

that Le Noise link worked for me!

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

on the individual songs there are also "official videos" for songs i didn't know had official videos

what a lunatic

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

I have to say this is DEFINITELY better than Dylan's "let's release a steady stream of affordable 2CD sets with great liner notes" approach that everyone was so sick of

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

sort of wish neil had never heard of the internet

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

ok, maybe i should actually read through the tutorial for this, but...what is the structure of this thing? it's chronological, only some of the songs from albums are visible unless you click the folder tabs? and why do some songs have multiple tabs on the same row (left and right side)? i get that the middle tab is for albums and other official releases, but...wtf is going on here

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

forget it karl it's shakeytown

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

that link started working for me, but then took like 10 minutes and still didn't finish loading.

sleeve, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

btw Neil Young in Berlin is on the timeline too so Solo Trans is not the concert on YouTube

Different shows. Berlin is the last TransBand show, filmed by Michael Lindsey-Hogg in late '82 and originally shown on HBO. Solo Trans is an American concert from the next year's Trans TV tour, with was Neil by himself and with the Shocking Pinks on the encore.

Solo Trans is up in bits and pieces on Youtube.

Never Learn To Mike Love (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:18 (six years ago) link

yeah Berlin (which is readily available) is 82. solo trans is 83 w/ shocking pinks, and only popped up in full on youtube briefly a couple years ago. might've been released on VHS though?

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:20 (six years ago) link

also is there going to be (god help us)...an app?

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

that '83 tour is a great Neil time-capsule. At the time fans/critics seemed generally confused at what he was going for but in the context of the height of Reagan-era in the US Neil's p much right in stride with what was going on culturally - synthesizers, 50s nostalgia, a general hokiness and cardboard-thin optimism

browsing through this archive is a total fucking nightmare

lol otm this is impossible to navigate ffs!

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link

so it's basically the blu-ray version of the archives with the next 40something years tacked on (in varying stages of completion).

tylerw, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

I should've just rented a U-haul, stolen all those reels, and digitized them myself

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

"Old man, look at my life. It's in a subfolder B after you right-click on that little LincVolt logo dealie...no, the other one."

i’d back a kickstarter for you to do this fwiw

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:53 (six years ago) link

the icon for the "play" button is the same icon as the "next" button

classic neil

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:58 (six years ago) link

it's hard to make a website with yourself
when you're old enough to drupal
and young enough to html

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link

Neil being a champion of all things analog, the server for the archives site is actually a giant abacus.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link

it will employ over 3 dozen abacus workers, toiling round the clock to keep up with the server demand

https://s7.postimg.org/xmfrmw5uj/Flipthe_Neil_Switch.jpgp

flip that neil switch!!!! not bragging just saying my audio quality is 2,877 right now, feels great

I love that the search icon is a keyhole from the game Myst

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link

keyhole = search is seriously grade A classic neil

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link

woah i got over 3,800 in audio quality then it crashed
icarus flew too close to the sun

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

i'm not even gonna bother with this tbh

just gonna wait until neil dies and someone else puts this stuff out in a reasonable way

marcos, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:15 (six years ago) link

Drawer makes clacky ratchet sound when it opens, but folders don't make whispy shuffle sound as you flip through them.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:16 (six years ago) link

I love that the search icon is a keyhole from the game Myst

neil saw some late 90s "enhanced cd-rom" things and was impressed

marcos, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

Needs to integrate winamp visualizer plugins for full psychedelic pill effect.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Friday, 1 December 2017 20:22 (six years ago) link

it is kinda hilarious how much this resembles his Blu-ray menu crap from the late 90s/early 00s

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:27 (six years ago) link

neil: gedda hold of this idea: you'll be able to click on the jpeg, and that'll open up other things you can play with!
neil hanger-ons ('the booger boys'): sounds great neil

Karl Malone, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:30 (six years ago) link

Neil would never use the word jpeg

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 December 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

Do you have to "log in" in order to get access? Neil, you shouldn't have to log in to get into the Doghouse
