Oh:

Gudrun currently runs the Monika Enterprise and Moabit Musik labels, was a early member of Einstürzende Neubauten and most famously founded the 1980s band Malaria! She has collaborated with Blixa Bargeld, Anita Lane, Thomas Fehlmann, etc

curmudgeon, Saturday, 3 March 2007 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry about that. i was trying not to be the "educator" dude. i hate it when people post every possible piece of info and assume everyone else knows nothing. anyway, yeah ... that's her. and she does the Oceanclub Radio show with Thomas Fehlmann

ugh

tis already on the front page, kind of

I'm not even sure it is her debut if you count the Ocean CLub disc, with all the collaborations...

fandango, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

anyway, also looking forward to this!

fandango, Saturday, 3 March 2007 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

This is good, yes.

videos audio myspace

That "Firething" song with Anita Lane seems just like standard disco/techno with a pop element through the vocals. The other cuts are a bit more intriguing.

curmudgeon, Sunday, 4 March 2007 02:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember The Ocean Club remixes being really great.

Let's be sure to please Frank Kogan.

(And curmudgeon, seriously, how often do you have anything much to say here about the music you like? Maybe I'm just reading the wrong threads.)

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 4 March 2007 04:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I *love* Firething... I'm not sure it's quite "standard" pop in the vocals at all.

(and ugh I hate it when threads fork because the search function got ignored)

fandango, Sunday, 4 March 2007 13:46 (seventeen years ago) link

1. "Firething" isn't on the album
2. Search function wasn't ignored. Monika Records and Gudrun Gut are different entities. Just sayin'.

Cameron Octigan, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I Put a Record On, as stated clearly in the press release, is absolutely her first completely solo full length. Everything else has been less than a full length or a collaboration.

Cameron Octigan, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

four weeks pass...
Meh. It just seemed pointless to have another thread started when there was already some ongoing discussion about this record on new answers, and as much as Monika and Gudrun are "different entities" (come on though, it's HER LABEL) People don't really complain about Ellen Allien discussions under a Bpitch thread for instance, the Kompakt one seems to cope ok too.

I'm not saying it doesn't deserve it's own thread, I just hate having to follow two at the same time on the same day for no good reason.

I wasn't saying "Firething" was on the album, but I'm not sure if that was directed at me.

Anyway this IS good, so far. Very confident (quietly) and assured. No fat on this sound at all!

fandango, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i finally figured out where that melody on 'Tip Tip' came from--John Cale's 'Riverbank' from Honi Soit. this was driving me crazy.

just thought i'd share, s'all.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 03:09 (seventeen years ago) link

isn't this great?!

fandango, Thursday, 5 April 2007 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

why, yes it is--and definitely a 'grower'.

nerve_pylon, Friday, 6 April 2007 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

it does bug me that the single is the first track. it's a great one, but i played it constantly for a few weeks when it came out. but, whatever--most people won't have heard it, i reckon.

Belatedly discovering this album - marvellous. Goes well with my Italians Do It Better obsession.

I was going to post about this on the "Albums With A Cult Following -- You and Only You" thread. But I see there are others right here.

All that stuff people are saying on the Fever Ray thread? That's how I feel about I Put A Record On.

Did I not say anything on this thread before? Yes, v. good stuff she does.

I saw her in Brisbane maybe three or four months ago. Awesome gig, Tenniscoats played after her. She was funny and awesome.

The Myra Davies & Gudrun Gut albums are fun if you're into spoken word. Gudrun Gut did the musical backing for the new Myra Davies as well, though I've only heard snippets.

And if you don't like Myra Davies talking all over your Berlin electronica, there's Beate Bartel & Gudrun Gut - Instrumentals for Sirens (2017)

Here's the link to the album playlist, as that didn't work.

tactical piñata (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 05:02 (six years ago) link

Knew the name sounded familiar. Beate Bartel was in Liaisons Dangereuses (1981), and with Gudrun, a founding member of Einstürzende Neubauten (1980-), Mania D. (1980), and Matator (1987-91).

tactical piñata (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 23 August 2017 05:11 (six years ago) link

Is there even a Beate Bartel / Liaisons Dangereuses thread?

Obviously, I knew Niños del Parque from a youth misspent in goth/industrial clubs, but I didn't ever find out who it was by until researching the Düsseldorf scene. And that suddenly exploded backwards into checking out Mania D / Malaria! / Matador, and now I'm just becoming obsessed with these women, finding out all of the things that Beate Bartel and Gudrun Gut were involved with is just mindblowing. They seem like such pivotal people who have done SO MUCH amazing stuff, but most of what I'm finding about their origins is kind of asides in Neubauten biographies.
