Anyone know what's going on with those guys? They did some gigs last year, but haven't heard a tweet about any new material. Are they still playing?

relax, it's just a nightmare

rizzx (Rizz), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:28 (seventeen years ago) link

they're in the studio. maybe knocking about with kevin shields. nearly released an ep late last year with a cover of sonic youths bull in the heather, but apparently changed their mind.

i thought drummer went deaf

no, that was the liars

friday on the porch (lfam), Friday, 2 February 2007 14:32 (seventeen years ago) link

you can get Bull in the Heather at http://www.myspace.com/thegoteam

seems they're still active (not to be confused with Tobi Vail's the Go Team) - Memphis Industries claims a new album's in the making.

the Dirt (FunkDirt), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Their song "Huddle Formation" gets lots of tv time in the US as the background on a Honda car commercial. They've said they're gonna use the money from the ad to help pay for sample clearances for the next cd

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:06 (seventeen years ago) link

that surprises me - they were very anti-commercial in the one interview i read (have been used everywhere as bedding for BBC 'adverts' and highlights and stuff like that though)

oh: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/39927/Go_Team_License_Song_to_Honda_Admit_Hypocrisy

Koogy Bloogies (koogs), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

they got paid nothing for all those bbc placements ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

really? i find that surprising, how come?

cw (cww), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:43 (seventeen years ago) link

the bbc used very small parts of the tracks involved (ie less than 30 seconds or something like that) and they have some special agreement with the Industry so that they dont have to pay for these snippets.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I hope the next album is mixed better...(the first one hurts my ears!)

hank (hank s), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i think that might be the point hank. that bbc thing is a real swizz, given that the music is effectively scoring advertisements, would they not get a hefty royalty check for that kind of usage on a commercial channel?

cw (cww), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

the album was never 'mixed' as such - it was a demo tape that Memphis Ind. loved as it was, so released it.
sorry, have no idea if commerical channels have to pay for snippets.

what an awful live band

Don Nightingale (don.nightingale), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Great band but that SY cover is pretty useless...

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:52 (seventeen years ago) link

They always look like they're trying too hard

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

i think, with the last lp at least, the studio and live incarnations were two very seperate deals

cw (cww), Friday, 2 February 2007 17:17 (seventeen years ago) link

They were a bundle of fun live at Coachella, particularly Ninja and her routine of national dancing styles.

lumberingwoodsman (Chris Hill), Friday, 2 February 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Definitely high energy, but the samples were always waaay to quiet, which made their whole sound seem pretty dead.

Don Nightingale (don.nightingale), Friday, 2 February 2007 17:55 (seventeen years ago) link

what an awful live band

Really? They've been on fire the nights I've seen them.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 2 February 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

high energy, terrible mixing, terrible cacophony and too much going on on stage, couldn't hear the samples or the singing. also the music is shite.

kyle gorman (killabee), Friday, 2 February 2007 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember being really charmed by their first single, "Get it Together" which was played a bunch of times as a 7" by a local college station. That was around 2000. Never could track down a copy. Then a promo comes through around 2004, and when I look at the one sheet, it says that Thunder Lightening Strike contains their first three or so singles (including Get it Together) plus what? five more songs? So it seems like it took them four years to make those first 11 songs.

I think the crap mixing, especially the red lining beats on Get It Together are a big part of the charm.

three years pass...

i just watched a movie on fox movie channel that, upon watching it, turns out to be the movie that the go team took their cheerleadering samples from
it's called GIMME AN F and it is all about cheerleading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimme_an_%27F%27
there is a team called the fudge falcons and another team called the moline ducks
it's RIDICULOUS and of course highly recommended

― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Tuesday, July 27, 2010 9:36 PM (40 seconds ago) Bookmark

reposted for anyone who still cares about the go team

the cheers they sampled were all from the "champion" team and at one point they were all wearing silver glitter covered keds. very little nudity in this movie, but an extremely gay dance sequence involving the male cheerleading teacher and a large communal shower.

ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

played the debut last night for first time in a long time and fell in love with it all over again.

mark e, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 08:05 (thirteen years ago) link

here's a clip of the squad from the movie. none of the clips from the song are on youtube, but they were instantly recognizable in the movie. there are other cheerleading sequences, but WOW are they ridiculous. if you like bad movies, this is a really good one.

there's also a scene where they turn on the power to a loudspeaker and it very plainly says, "the power is ON"

new track on soundcloud : http://soundcloud.com/thegoteam/t-o-r-n-a-d-o

same brickwall of sound. same chant outs (real as opposed to sampled).

not as addicitve of earlier material, but a good starting point for the album.

A smile comes across my face everytime that NFL commercial comes on with the Atlanta Falcons and a bunch of kids on buses having a great time while "The Power Is On" plays.

buy nothing day is a song i enjoy

johnny crunch, Thursday, 6 January 2011 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

That's also my favorite. The album has something of a Junior Senior feel to it to go along with the usual Go Team drumming and instrumentation.

skip, Thursday, 6 January 2011 02:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah "Buy Nothing Day" is great, and I reckon it's their best LP yet too.

Simon H., Thursday, 6 January 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I've only played just heard Rolling Blackouts today and I'm shocked how much I'm enjoying it. The production is so good and the songs are as strong as the first album.

They seem to have followed exactly the same pattern as the Scissor Sisters, great debut followed by hugely disappointing second album then getting it just right for the third album. Proof of youth sounded so rushed and I don't think I've played it since it came out but I think this one will be getting played a lot.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

"Buy Nothing Day" is great, but if I didn't know who it was I'd have guessed The Pains of Being Pure at Heart or suchlike. I like them best when they're not being a straightahead rock group.

Thunder, Lightning, Strike is one of my favourite albums of the last decade, but somehow I didn't feel any need to pay attention to them for a long time after that (I think I've heard Proof of Youth once). I'm keen to hear Rolling Blackouts now, though.

Dans la Bot (seandalai), Thursday, 13 January 2011 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link

where did the go team! go?

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 13 January 2011 00:50 (thirteen years ago) link

The other day I listened to Thunder, Lightning, Strike on Spotify and it sounded absolutely horrible compared to my own copy, as in almost unlistenable. I think it was the first time I heard the "remixed" version with live vocals and recreated samples; is it actually that bad? Or maybe it was just Spotify's compression.

Dans la Bot (seandalai), Friday, 14 January 2011 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

This is mostly great. Best Coast singer should join permanently.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 02:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Title track (with Best Coast person) is pretty perfect MBV/Lush pastiche.

No mention of the Whyte Horses 2015 album Pop Or Not here? Ian Parton is one of the guests on it. Don't know exactly on what songs but a couple definitely sound 'rather go-team-esque'.
