lol the other night when I had this epiphany i had to find the Garfield Christmas Special on YouTube (Jon's brother Doc Boy is voiced by Squiggy) to confirm it

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:25 (seventeen years ago) link

haha i'm just glad you didn't say "on dvd"

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

to be totally honest for a second I thought I might have it on DVD but then I remembered it was the Charlie Brown holiday specials DVD that I got for Christmas a few years ago :(

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Some of the music on the Lally cd sounds like skeletal frameworks for Fugazi tracks. I can't decide if that's good or bad.

I wish the Evens effort had catchier melodies, although it has some energy to it that almost compensates.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah that's the problem I guess when guys go solo who probably wouldn't have gone solo if the band didn't go on a long hiatus -- stuff kinda sounds like "this would be a badass Fugazi bassline" but there's nothing else going on around it. the first Evens album aged poorly for me but so far I'm liking the new one a lot more.

Hoover - The Lurid Traversal Of Route 7 (Just listened to it a few days ago actually)

Oh and of course Jawbox and Fugazi..

Sir Echo (Sir Echo), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

If Dischord's latest string of releases hasn't been top-notch, it certainly hasn't been any worse than 99% of the schmindie that DOES get reviewed heavily in the national rock press. If the only excuse is "the other publicists are yelling at me more," that's sort of a sad commentary on music journalism.

At the same time, I guess if it's just the way things are, Dischord has to cave to it to some extent if they want to remain *relevant*

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Jess, how many promos do you get per week?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:23 (seventeen years ago) link

um, not many actually, and hardly anything anyone would actually want. (lots of touring pop-punk and metal bands on tiny labels, etc.) (though i did get the last batch of dischord stuff.)

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago) link

There were also the two Black Eyes releases in 2002 and 2004. That band didn't have any of the usual Dischord suspects and their second record, Cough, was quite good and slept on, I think, because the band broke up before they could tour in support of it. Still, it seems Dischord is conservative about who they sign, and other notable DC bands of late have gone elsewhere. Eg. Dead Meadow is on Matador, Measles Mumps Rubella was on Troubleman and then moved from DC to NYC, etc. Also, French Toast (along with the Capital City Dusters) are completely unlistenable.

Emmett_Stinson (Emmett_Stinson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:38 (seventeen years ago) link

i still like the first evens record, i've heard mixed things abt the second one

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:42 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe dischord should have signed army of me.

(cough)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 19 January 2007 02:57 (seventeen years ago) link

That group is awful. I saw them play some bbq back when they were called Cactus Patch. Just terribe--winning WHFS's best unsigned band award was clearly a dubious honor. There have been other good bands in DC over the last several years but most of them don't have that "DC sound." Also, no one has mentioned either the Crown Hate Ruin or the Make Up, both classic 90s Dischord bands.

Emmett_Stinson (Emmett_Stinson), Friday, 19 January 2007 05:55 (seventeen years ago) link

lol army of me

i dug (and still do, pretty much) antelope, who are like one of the only dc bands left to still sound dischordy albeit in a very refined way. most of the bands around here worth paying attention to now don't really sound anything like trad-dischord groups.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 19 January 2007 06:06 (seventeen years ago) link

ugh i hate the make up but the crown hate ruin is aok

ewe never broke yr treo 4ever (ex machina), Friday, 19 January 2007 06:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Search and search again: Ten Spot / Funeral at the Movies by Shudder to Think is by far my favourite record on Dischord at the moment. Why on earth I haven't been listening to this for 15 years I do not know.

Capital Swamp: The DC Resource Thread

Here's the all-DC music thread. In the DC go-go world the veterans still get most of the attention as well--Chuck Brown, Rare Essence, Backyard, and EU.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

oh god the make up. awful, awful band

the wages of sin is death (Brian Miller), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I loved that one Make-Up show I saw in New London where some heroin chick was feeling it / strung out & rubbing her ass up against one of the monitors. And Ian was trying to get the crowd into it, and I'm pretty sure the crowd was like, "uh, no."

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

the make up were awesome wtf!

the singles comp is still great...."born on the floor" was their best song ever.

the smoked live too.

i keep meaning to check out scene creamers/wierd war/whatever else dude is up to.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't hum any of their songs.

cupid car club on the other hand=awesome as shit!

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I tried to like the Make Up, but I just couldn't get into them. I have 2 of their albums, I probably like at most 2 songs on each.

I Want Some, the Make Up singles collection, is much better than any of their albums.

the wages of sin is death (Brian Miller), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

not a huge dischord fan but faraquet were cool when i saw them. did a lovely split with a band called arkaso as well, which has odd drum production - i could never decide if i liked it or not.

infact, drummers in both bands, mmm mmm.

george bob (george bob), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, Smart Went Crazy and its offshoots (Faraquet, Medications, Beauty Pill, etc.) are some of my favorite stuff from the recent eras of Dischord

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Fucking hell, Make Up were amazing live! What fun!

Antelope just finished a record for Dischord coming out soon.

I've mentioned this on at least 55 other threads, but please, Dischord, re-issue the Vile Cherubs records, por favor.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Slant 6 is great!

Shudder to Think was rad 2

UART variations (ex machina), Friday, 19 January 2007 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

OTM on Slant 6 - 'Don't You Ever?' is a massively catchy single.
I've already said on other threads Shudder to Think is my favorite band from the 1990s.
The Warmers also deserve some love.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

"Red House" on the Dischord comp is rad.

UART variations (ex machina), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

The Warmers 14 songs LP was absolutely amazing. Also, the Circus Lupus dischord release was good. At the same time, even in the 90s, Dischord did release some pretty mediocre bands, eg. Severin, Bluetip, Branch Manager. Everything Shudder to Think did on Dischord is great. The song "Rag" from the first LP is excellent.

Emmett_Stinson (Emmett_Stinson), Saturday, 20 January 2007 01:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I really liked Bluetip at the time

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 20 January 2007 04:50 (seventeen years ago) link

the last q and not u album was fantastic - "power" had all the wonderful bits of the dance-punk fad of the past few years, minus the over production and attitude.

i too also liked black eyes' "cough"... vastly underappreciated album. 2006 was a very slow year for dischord, but i'm looking forward to the aquarium album, as well as more joe lally stuff. i'm still pretty sad that i missed the evens in boston a month or two ago.

Watched the Slint documentary the other night and thought then that, by the by, Ian MacKaye seems one of the most truly righteous people alive.

His most recent band Coriky seems to be on break for now. Ian’s brother Alec has been doing some touring with his band Hammered Hulls .

Speaking of bands in the family tree, did yall see what I posted on Fugazi--Classic or Dud?

Tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis's Eye of I, my most played album of current days, ends with this track feat. The Mezzthetics, who are Lally and Canty and guitarist Anthony Pirog---goes pretty well with the other tracks---then the guitar comes in:
