Q And Not U were genius. No Kill No Beep Beep is one of the best guitardriven postcore records I ever heard.

Also, I really dug Shudder To Think when they were still on Dischord. And of course the Nation Of Ulysses and Rites Of Spring stuff.

If that's a dis, it's kind of odd if you look at the first four years or so of the label, and to a lesser extent its whole history. I think if there's a common reason for a downturn it's the fact that all these people are self-consciously trying to move away from the stuff that they did on the label before (which started with, like, Rites of Spring but even so).

"Baltimore Club/Indie Rock mashup thing" makes me intrigued but kind of scared.

richards is a very entertaining writer; i always enjoy his stuff. georgie james is definitely worth keeping an ear out for. it's like the best 70's am pop never to grace a transistor radio's speakers. strong live show, too.

yeah I'm not really dissing, I mean you can't decry a label for being insular and inbred when their whole reason for existence is to document one city's scene. but still, you can't address the label's diminishing profile when almost every new band's fanbase is a smaller subset of the members' previous band's fanbase. the Lally album has its moments but I honestly could barely listen to it after I realized how much his voice reminds me of Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley

to be totally honest for a second I thought I might have it on DVD but then I remembered it was the Charlie Brown holiday specials DVD that I got for Christmas a few years ago :(

Some of the music on the Lally cd sounds like skeletal frameworks for Fugazi tracks. I can't decide if that's good or bad.

I wish the Evens effort had catchier melodies, although it has some energy to it that almost compensates.

yeah that's the problem I guess when guys go solo who probably wouldn't have gone solo if the band didn't go on a long hiatus -- stuff kinda sounds like "this would be a badass Fugazi bassline" but there's nothing else going on around it. the first Evens album aged poorly for me but so far I'm liking the new one a lot more.

If Dischord's latest string of releases hasn't been top-notch, it certainly hasn't been any worse than 99% of the schmindie that DOES get reviewed heavily in the national rock press. If the only excuse is "the other publicists are yelling at me more," that's sort of a sad commentary on music journalism.

At the same time, I guess if it's just the way things are, Dischord has to cave to it to some extent if they want to remain *relevant*

um, not many actually, and hardly anything anyone would actually want. (lots of touring pop-punk and metal bands on tiny labels, etc.) (though i did get the last batch of dischord stuff.)

There were also the two Black Eyes releases in 2002 and 2004. That band didn't have any of the usual Dischord suspects and their second record, Cough, was quite good and slept on, I think, because the band broke up before they could tour in support of it. Still, it seems Dischord is conservative about who they sign, and other notable DC bands of late have gone elsewhere. Eg. Dead Meadow is on Matador, Measles Mumps Rubella was on Troubleman and then moved from DC to NYC, etc. Also, French Toast (along with the Capital City Dusters) are completely unlistenable.

That group is awful. I saw them play some bbq back when they were called Cactus Patch. Just terribe--winning WHFS's best unsigned band award was clearly a dubious honor. There have been other good bands in DC over the last several years but most of them don't have that "DC sound." Also, no one has mentioned either the Crown Hate Ruin or the Make Up, both classic 90s Dischord bands.

i dug (and still do, pretty much) antelope, who are like one of the only dc bands left to still sound dischordy albeit in a very refined way. most of the bands around here worth paying attention to now don't really sound anything like trad-dischord groups.

Search and search again: Ten Spot / Funeral at the Movies by Shudder to Think is by far my favourite record on Dischord at the moment. Why on earth I haven't been listening to this for 15 years I do not know.

I loved that one Make-Up show I saw in New London where some heroin chick was feeling it / strung out & rubbing her ass up against one of the monitors. And Ian was trying to get the crowd into it, and I'm pretty sure the crowd was like, "uh, no."

not a huge dischord fan but faraquet were cool when i saw them. did a lovely split with a band called arkaso as well, which has odd drum production - i could never decide if i liked it or not.

infact, drummers in both bands, mmm mmm.

OTM on Slant 6 - 'Don't You Ever?' is a massively catchy single.
I've already said on other threads Shudder to Think is my favorite band from the 1990s.
The Warmers also deserve some love.

The Warmers 14 songs LP was absolutely amazing. Also, the Circus Lupus dischord release was good. At the same time, even in the 90s, Dischord did release some pretty mediocre bands, eg. Severin, Bluetip, Branch Manager. Everything Shudder to Think did on Dischord is great. The song "Rag" from the first LP is excellent.

the last q and not u album was fantastic - "power" had all the wonderful bits of the dance-punk fad of the past few years, minus the over production and attitude.

i too also liked black eyes' "cough"... vastly underappreciated album. 2006 was a very slow year for dischord, but i'm looking forward to the aquarium album, as well as more joe lally stuff. i'm still pretty sad that i missed the evens in boston a month or two ago.
