Can anyone help me find an image of this shirt designed by Bernie Rhodes for Sex around 1976?

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Friday, 12 January 2007 20:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Please Kill Me has a photo by Bob Gruen of J. Thunders wearing it, but the text, though visible, is not very legible. BTW the first line goes "you're gonna wake up one morning and know what side of the bed you've been lying on!"

Thanks, that's really helpful!

If anyone has the complete text, it would help, too.

It's on pp. 84-85 in the paperback edition of England's Dreaming.

Not in the hardback?

There are repeated refs to it in Last Gang In Town, but never a very complete list.

I assume it is, but I was looking at my paperback copy and don't know if the page numbers in the hardcover are the same. They probably are.

I always understood that it was designed by Vivienne Westwood from a list that had been written by Malcolm McLaren (hence the mention of "Kutie Jones and his Sex Pistols", which was almost certainly the first time that the band had been publicised in any form and evidently predates them recruiting John Lydon.... if Bernie Rhodes had been involved wouldn't there have been some mention of the London SS as well / instead?).

I can't find an image for it anywhere online but the text of it is:

"You're gonna wake up one morning and know what side of the bed
you've been lying on!

Fwiw some of the unfamiliar names in the "Loves" list (Susan 602 2509, Lady Sinthia 908 5569) were apparently taken from the calling cards that some of the local prostitutes used to put on notice boards in shops and leave in phone boxes etc.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 12 January 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Iirc there was also a very specific reason for the inclusion in the "hate" list of "Shaw Taylor--whispering grass" (a reference to the host of a TV programme called "Police 5", a sort of early forerunner of "Crimewatch" which appealed to the public to help solve crimes) which eludes me right now but I think it was something to do with some clothes (intended for Malcolm & Civinenne's "Sex" shop?) being seized and impounded by the police.

June Bolan? What did she ever do to justify dislike?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 January 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Dunno. Maybe something to do with June's involvement with Pink Floyd's management around the time they threw Syd out of the band (although why single her out and not mention any of his so-called band mates?!); or the fact that she had left Marc Bolan for that bloke out of the Arrows (although afaik Marc was seeing Gloria Jones at the time, so again, why....) but I suspect that it was either that she represented some particular sort of social "type" or perhaps something more personal and specific.

Fine though Bester's "Tiger, Tiger" is, it's disorienting to come across it here. Wonder who was reading it.

here's an interesting book on the history of rock t-shirts. seriously! loads of good pics and smart non-academic text.

I was going to make this thread the other day. Saw the new one and was curios as to what constituted what back then. Funny coincidence.

Funnily enough I was thinking about this the other day (and how I wish I'd been the right age and in the right place to buy and wear one). I wonder what a list of 2006 Loves and Hates would look like.

Archie Shepp, Iggy Pop, John Coltrane, Spunky James Brown, Dewey Redman, KING TUBBY's sound system...oh yes, definitely my kind of people!

(though I would have put George Melly and David Essex in the LOVES section)
(but then of course I would say that)

If Malcolm was compiling the list I'm not convinced that "Kutie Jones and his SEX PISTOLS" would still appear in the "Loves" section....
